Speaking of Saarinen, he actually also submitted an entry into the Canberra competition (Federal Capital City Design Competition of 1911) and managed to come in second place!

Here it is:

Looks a lot like Saarinen's proposal for a Finnish parliament building:

And his plans for the (in)famous Kalevalatalo:

Saarinen's 1913 plan for Greater Tallinn:

Not to start a beef or something but am I the only one who gets kinda negative vibe from all those "cities"? It looks so artificial and sterile, lacks soul, history and tradition, all buildings same. (While I like certain degree of uniformity/homogenity, this is IMHO too much)

I get that vibe too with many of these cities, or at least with their concept drawings. Though, I assume that what the city beautiful movement and Saarinen were (at least in part) trying to emulate is the Haussmann renovation of Paris, which is also a very organized city with most of the buildings being similar, and yet It doesn't look sterile to me at all. Of course I could be wrong about their inspiration though. I any case I think there are exeptions, an example of that would be Ernest Gimson's plan for Canberra which seems very coazy and alive with it's assymetrical street-grid and abundance of greenery.

The street layout and and tenment buildings really look very nice and i think this would be a very good garden city, but most of the public buildings are out of proprtion and look to much like fantasy castles.
