I think it's nice small Airport. Not many sky bridges like Athens and Belgrade. It will cover European destinations and that's about it. Too bad Sofia got no competitive airline to grow and rise the passenger number in Sofia.

Some people like the new terminal, some don't-that's normal. So let's just clear the size ot this terminal-there is some controvertial information about its capacity,in the official site they said on one hand that at its max it will handle 2.5m passangers per year, and on the other hand 2500 passengers per hour-2500x14hpd=35000ppdx365days=12775000 passengers per year-which in fact is impossible. So considering that the old terminal has 5 gates with capacity of 2.5m ppy,and the new one will be with 12 gates-8 with air bridges-so its capasity will be around 6m passangers. The old terminal will continue to operate but only for low cost carriers(I think it will be a success, cos it's situated even closer to the city than the new terminal, and considering that the low cost carriers usually use some distant from the city airports because of the costs the old terminal will be atractive for them both with the low taxes and it's location very close to the city centre.

It should also be made clear that the new airport terminal has a modular design, so it is designed to be expandable both to the east and west. Furtherstill, it should also be clarified that both terminals are in the same airport. We are not talking about a new airport, but a new terminal, aprons, taxiways and 3600m runway. The distance between the old terminal and the new one is about 500m, which equates to 10-15 seconds highway drive at 100km/h. So in other words, I don't think this will make much of a difference for any companies. As you said however, the old aiport will be attractive to low cost carriers, because it will be cheaper to use. Overall, with terminal 1 and now 2, Sofia airport has an official capacity of 6 million people and a technical capacity of nearly 10 million. Not bad for a city of 1.3 million...

...and the renderings do not do justice to the airport....unlike many other projects where the renderings are better than the actual buildings, here the real airport photos are much better than the rendering. Weird.

Some brand new images of the ongoing work in progress at the Sofia airport new terminal. The pictures were taken from Nikola Gruev's website at www.pbase.com.

well this looks interesting!
I have to admit, the airport looks much better than what I expected from the renderings.
But what I'm really interested in is how did he get inside the building? I would expect to have some kind of security around such a major construction site, and he didn't mention being escorted

How much did this terminal cost in the end? And can we see an overview photo of it?
Looks sweet & sexy, but like lakerdar said, maybe its too small for Sofia. But im guessing its not the only terminal, right?

it reminds me of this station in NYC. at penn plaza on 34 and 7th it's one of the main stations in manhattan where trains from the city and country come. there are always two soldiers guarding the area but they have no weapons or anything. they're just dressed in cammo suit. what kind of protection is that?

Let's not forget that this is not a new airport, but a new terminal . Also the teminal has a modular structure and could be easily expanded, provided you have funds to invest (example Feregedgy II Terminal in Budapest). Also unlike many of the other EE contries, Bulgaria has two more major international aiports, which are currently servicing international flights all year round. In this respect, what Sofia needs is a comfortable and efficient aiport up the standards of Europe, rather than some megalomanic project that would impress people. You know what I am talking about; the grand projects from our communist past.

I don't live in my native country and everytime I arrive in Sofia my heart sinks at the sight of the sad, old terminal built in the 50s. The new one would match the vibe and economic progess Bulgaria finally enjoys the last 7 years.
