Newcastle has some gorgeous (!) pockets of blank paving... but never really did well at the modern 'animation' of public spaces - with lighting, water, furniture etc. Central Station area feels particularly 'off the shelf' and functional.

Of course there's a few follies and things on the quayside - albeit tired and shabby (eg swirle pavilion).

Hull, Belfast, Manchester, Sheffield etc are all very good at this.

Green fingered Northumbrians have done the county proud yet again as they collected a string of awards after impressing judges in this year’s Northumbria in Bloom awards.

Hexham won a Silver gilt in the Town category.
