--- sss - st Margarets & the Fembots - sss ---

Well, this huge multi-residential project is well underway on the site of the previously known St Margarets Hospital. Situated in Surry Hills between Bourke & Crown Streets and a 3 min. stroll from Taylor Square.

4 main buildings, either being converted from existing hospital structures or newly built; to be known as alba, henry, jasper & ivy (yes, all lower case as in the "st" of st Margarets).

The flash web site @ www.stmargarets.com.au

The tallest being ivy @ 17 storeys above ground. To be seen in the background of the 1st pic and apparent in the 2nd.

LOL @ the fembots!

I really like this development, and the style it has chosen for both design and marketing! One of the main buildings is a refurbished building of the old hospital isn't it?

I read an article about this development about how it will revitalise the area and comments about the project in general were very positive.

I was actually born in St Margarets so I have a connection to the site. Is there anyone else out there who was born in this hospital.

I was born in The Bethesda Hospital in Enmore, which is now a nursing home.

Visited the site today and here is some feedback:

Completion of the whole "Maggies" project was initially expected to be around March, 2004. However, Grocon is ahead of schedule and it will be completed in stages from Sept. to Dec. next year at this stage.

2 cranes are currently on site. 1 being at the side of ivy (the tallest) and ivy's core is just up to street level.

The 2nd tallest structure is alba. It is being constructed in one of only two original hospital structures left. 8 floors above ground but around 3.2m height per floor. The other original structure was the hospital's chapel, now acting as the display suite and will eventually be converted for commercial use. It is cylindrical in shape.

The 3rd tallest will be jasper @ 11 floors above ground but lower floor to ceiling heights than alba (it's visible in the first 2 pics above). It's at "huge-whole-in-the-ground" stage.

The lowest yet longest structure will be henry @ 2 floors above ground. It will be terrace style accommodation. The long orange and white structure on the left in the 3rd pic.

There will be 4 levels of carpark under a large piece of the site.

st Margarets is already around 90% sold, the developers are planning more aprtment buildings for the area; particularly towards Flinders Street. They are just wating for the "DA,OK" for those plans.

Passed the site last Weds 7/05 and Ivy's construction is already up to level 11. Only 6 more levels to go until it tops out.

Ivy is such an irregular shaped structure.

There was an article in the Herald on Tuesday, I think it was, about the developer's plans for the site across Bourke Street, along Short Street through to Flinders Street, for St Margarets East. This will include several buildings, including an 18 storey tower near Flinders Street.
In South Sydney Council office foyer - middle building, enter off Elizabeth or Mary streets - there are several models of pending developments including the whole St Margarets West (under construction) and East (being negotiated). You might have to scramble about a bit as the display area, as always, is Very Amateur with models often stacked on top of each other! I guess display is a task for the office boy. Bloody pathetic.
BUT, the models are there!

Does anyone remember a few months when Noonos was not sure about the development "in east Sydney"?

I actually took a picture at Kirribilli last month and here's what IVY looked like from there. It is on the left of the image I have posted. This was part of a panorama that I had planned for you all but the images didn't quite connect to each other
