Vishakhapatnam BRTS | Simhachalam Transit Corridor including Tunnel | Pendurthi Transit Corridor

i feel this deserves its own thread. because the project has been finalized.
  • sadbhavan engineering wins the contract for the Pendurthy terminal corridor.
  • length of the corridor Pendurty - Asilemetta is 19 km. cost 156.5 crores
  • around 2000 houses, businesses along the corridor to be relocated
  • Tenders for the Asilemetta Flyover to be invited on the 8th
  • Tenders for the Simhachalam terminal complex to be invited on the 6th.

Work on pendurty corridor to begin next week

things are moving at a fast pace.

VISAKHAPATNAM: Work on the Rs.154-crore Pendurty Transit Corridor (PTC), which is part of Bus Rapid Transit Scheme will commence by September 25. Tenders for this 19-km transit corridor, which will have a number of bus stops, have been finalised and the project, entrusted to GKC-Sadbhavana joint venture, is scheduled to be completed in one year.

According to GVMC Commissioner Mukesh Kumar Meena, rehabilitation package for the evacuees of the project will be placed before the next council meeting.

Speaking to media persons in his office here on Monday, the Commissioner said there were four bidders for the Rs. 155-crore Simhachalam Transit Corridor (STC) and all clearances would be available by the end of this month and works would commence soon. He said there were some problems in respect of a 5-km stretch of the PTC and they were being sorted out.

He said that the work on the one km long flyover between Aseelmetta and Divisional Railway Office would also begin soon. Detailed Project Reports (DPR) for two other flyovers proposed at Gopalapatnam and Chavulamadum were awaited. These would go a long way in solving traffic problems in the city, he said. When asked about traffic problems at other busy junctions like Maddilapalem, the Commissioner said that a private agency was commissioned to study the problem and suggest improvements to streamline traffic.

On mobilisation of funds for the BRTS, the Commissioner said that apart from internal sources, bonds to the tune of Rs.100 crores were proposed to be issued. The Government had given green signal for issue of bonds, he said. Also the GVMC proposed to go for a loan of Rs.200 crores. “We are seeking permission from the Government for this,” he said, adding that other details of the loan proposal were being worked out.

Vizag city to have 42-km BRTS by 2010

In a bid to ease out traffic congestion in the city, the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation is undertaking two bus rapid transport system projects of about 42 km in Vizag city at a total cost of about Rs 452 crore. Out of these, one project of 20 km is all set to be awarded shortly to Sadbhav Engineering-GKC Projects Ltd JV shortly as their quote of Rs 162 crore has emerged as the 'L1' bid. For the second project, tender is being re invited.

Jayaram Reddy, Chief Engineer, GVMC, who is involved in the project, told Projectmonitor that the BRTS would be implemented with a joint finance from the Andhra Pradesh government (20 per cent) and Government of India (50 per cent), under JNNURM), and GVMC (30 per cent). He said that the entire project would be completed by October 2010.

The EPC contractor will be required to carry out investigation, survey, design and execution of the BRTS corridor from RTC complex at Asilmetta to Vepagunta junction in Vizag.

Global seminar on BRTS

VISAKHAPATNAM: A three-day international seminar and workshop on “Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) in India and Abroad” will be organised by the Indo-German Institute of Advanced Technology (IGIAT) and Gayatri Vidya Parishad College of Engineering (GVPCOE) from September 24.

Addressing a media conference in this connection on Monday, honorary adviser of IGIAT P. Srinivasa Rao said that India’s urban population was around 30 per cent of its total population.

This was expected to double in view of migration from rural areas. This would result in an increase in private transport by six to eight per cent. An efficient public transportation system was necessary to prevent the future chaos on the city roads........

BRTS is cost effective: Official

VISAKHAPATNAM: Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) provides a cheap and efficient public transport unlike the Metro Rail, which is a costlier alternative, said Secretary to the Union Ministry of Urban Development M. Ramachandran.

Delivering the keynote address at an international seminar on ‘BRTS in India and abroad’ organised by the Indo-German Institute of Advanced Technology (IGIAT) and Gayatri Vidya Parishad College of Engineering (GVPCOE) here on Wednesday, he said the urban transport policy of the Central Government laid stress on developing cheap and efficient public transport. He said the design and operational parameters have to be carefully worked out by the corporations concerned, consultants and other players for the success of the system.

Mr. Ramachandran said BRTS had been approved for 10 cities in India under the JNNURM scheme. While in Delhi and Pune the project was under implementation on a pilot basis, in the other cities it was under various stages of implementation. Though urban transport was a State subject and States were free to choose their own modes of public transport, it was mandatory for them to follow the national policy guidelines to be eligible for funds under JNNURM scheme.
Common man’s metro

Describing BRTS as ‘common man’s metro’, he underlined the need for working out an affordable and integrated fare for its success. The very purpose would be defeated if the fares were high, he said.

An Administrator in the Federal Transit Administration (Washington DC) James Simpson described BRTS as a ‘sensible’ mode of transport that was not only easy to implement but also cost effective.

He said the FTA had committed $ 1 billion to fight congestion in cities in the US.

He said BRT was highly successful in the US and expressed that it could do equally well in India in view of the huge population.

He called for signal prioritisation, quick loading and unloading.

He felt the planners could even think of using the dedicated lanes during non-peak for other traffic and utilise the funds to strengthen the system.

Leyland offers fleet for BRTS

VISAKHAPATNAM: Ashok Leyland, a major manufacturer of buses and commercial vehicles, has the capacity to build special buses required for Bus Rapid Transit System, said Gopalan of Ashok Leyland.

Speaking on “Special technologies for buses related to BRTS” on the concluding day of the workshop on ‘BRTS Implementation: Issues and Solutions’, being jointly organised by the Indo-German Institute of Advanced Technology (IGIAT) and Gayatri Vidya Parishad College of Engineering on Friday, he said Leyland was already supplying buses for BRTS in Delhi. The special features of Leyland include ease of operation, low maintenance, driver comfort and fuel efficiency.

The company also has the capacity to manufacture front-engine, semi-low floor buses for convenience of physically handicapped passengers. It has the wherewithal to manufacture double-decker and vestibule buses and those that run on alternative fuels like CNG.

B. Anil Baliga of Volvo said special technologies were being developed in India for BRTS. Indian companies should manufacture more buses, he said.

P.S. Suresh of CMS Traffic Systems spoke on ‘Intelligent transport systems’. Rakesh Kaul of SREI Infrastructures Finance Limited, New Delhi, Santosh Kodukula of GTZ, Bangkok, Madhav Pai of EMBARQ, Mumbai, Manfred Breithaupt of GTZ, Germany spoke. Prof P.S. Rao presided.

Organising secretary P. Veerabhardra Rao, IGIAT director M.P.S. Murthy and Prof. M. Kishore Kumar were present.

VISAKHAPATNAM: Work on the much talked about Asilmetta flyover in the city has begun. The construction of the flyover to ease traffic congestion at the nerve centre of the city has been on the cards for more than three years now. It finally is being launched as a part of Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) under which two corridors are proposed. The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation has readied plans to take up BRTS under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) in which the Union Government foots 50 per cent of the cost.

The flyover will come up between Vemanamandiram on the Asilmetta side and the DRM’s Office covering a distance of 1.1 km.

The earlier plan of having a two landing arms for it- one each from the municipal office side and Rama Talkies side to integrate traffic from either direction towards the Railway Station had been dropped.

Congestion


“Instead a subway will come up to reduce congestion and allow free running of RTC buses,” a top official told The Hindu. The subway will have two arms- one from the RTC Complex to Rama Talkies and another from the Municipal Office to Rama Talkies.

Though the subway can be used by all, the one from the RTC Complex is expected to be more useful for buses coming out of the bus station to join the traffic.

Paving way for smooth flow of RTC buses in decongesting traffic in the area.

The subway is part of the flyover project, adds the official.

Right now the contractor who has been awarded the work has taken up soil-testing as he has to submit the design for the project under the Engineering-procurement-construction (EPC) basis.

He is expected to submit the design in a month’s time. The GVMC officials will then okay it after taking the opinion of consultants.

The flyover, estimated to cost Rs.62 crores, is scheduled for completion in two years.

looks like from the above news they are gonna build subways for vehicles??
kinda like a mini boston big dig. i cant believe there will be vehicles going underground in vizag till i actually see it and drive through it. gonna be a great project IF its going according to plan.

i highly doubt the underground road system will happen though.
its wayy too expensive and difficult to dig roads underground.
it will need a huge exhaust system to pump out the air and the fire safety systems must be very state of the art with constant video monitoring.

Stone Laid for Flyover

VISAKHAPATNAM: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy on Friday laid the foundation stone for a flyover from Asilmetta to the railway station.

Ministers Konathala Ramakrishna, Kanna Lakshminarayana, Rajya Sabha MP T. Subbarami Reddy, Mayor Pulusu Janardhana Rao, several MLAs and MLCs and others attended a simple ceremony held to mark the occasion near Greater Visakha Municipal Corporation’s headquarters.

Dr. Reddy enquired about the salient features of the project and instructed the contractor to complete the work before 24-month schedule.

The estimated cost of the flyover is Rs. 61.70 crores. It is being taken up under the Rs. 452-crore Bus Road Transit System project. The work order has been allotted to M. Venkat Rao Infra Ltd. on a turnkey basis.

Fifty per cent of funding is given by the Central Government and the balance is borne jointly by GVMC and the State Government.

The flyover will have a length of 1,100 meters with a bridge portion of 706.75 meters. It will have two-lane carriageway each with a width of 7.5 meters.

Work on two BRTS Corridors Begin

The two corridors connect Pendurthy to Dwarakanagar on two different routes.

On the 22.6 km Pendurthy corridor that connects to Dwarakanagar via NAD Kotha Road work has begun at Chinnamushidivada.

While the first kilometre of the corridor has some structures, the 5 km stretch from 1 km to 6 km is available for work, according to officials.

The encroachments on the stretch have been removed for relaying the Tatipudi pipeline, also taken up under the JNNURM. The work taken up is construction of drains and ducts in RCC box type.

A footpath will come up on the drains and ducts, according to Superintendent Engineer (Projects) Moses Kumar.

The construction is similar to the one taken up on the Jail Road but smaller in dimension.

While work goes on one side of the road, traffic is restricted to the other half.

On the Simhachalam corridor that begins at Vepagunta and reaches Hanumanthavaka via Simhachalam, Adavivaram and Mudasarlova, work started at Pineapple Colony, Mr. Moses Kumar said.

The median on the 200-ft road laid earlier is being removed to construct the corridor.

The existing service road will be used for traffic while the work is going on.

After finalisation of designs, the two companies selected for executing work on the two corridors have been given a mobilisation advance of Rs.34 crores as per the norms of the engineering, procurement and construction agreement.

In the ongoing work on the flyover from Vemana Mandiram to the DRM’s office, 18 of the 128 pile foundations have been completed.

All the foundations are expected to be completed by the end of the month.

The flyover forms part of the Pendurthy corridor and is being constructed at an additional cost of Rs. 62 crores.
