Vác

Vác is a nice small town located by the river Danube 35 km north of Budapest.

The settlement which was established after the Hungarian Conquest (when the first Hungarians arrived at the Carpathian Basin in 896) was one of the earliest pontifical centers. The first Hungarian king, Saint Stephen, laid the foundations of the Vác episcopate. The deed of foundation unfortunately has not survived, thus the first written record of Vác comes from 1074 from the almanac of the Niedersaxon city of Yburg, which refers to Vác as "Watzenburg". Another mention of the city as "Wac civitas" can be found in a document of the Abbey of Garamszentbenedek. There are several theories regarding the origin of the word "Vác", but there is no common agreement in this issue. Today most linguists agree that the name was originally a personal name that later became a geographical one. According to a legend in the Illustrated Chronicle of Vienna, in 1074 princes Géza and László fought a battle to decide the succession to the Hungarian throne. Before the battle, they happened to wander in the nearby forest where they allegedly met a hermit called Vác, and the city was later named after him. A different theory attributes the name to one of the Hungarian clans 'Vath'.

Thanks for the pictures! Your own or downloaded from somewhere?
I have never been to Vác but the town looks really beautiful so perhaps it's time to check on it

Nemrég jártam Vácon. Ezeket fotóztam.

Március 15. tér:

A Mária Terézia tiszteletére emelt diadalív:

Az egykori Bécsi kapu modern megidézése:

A piaristák meglehetősen rossz állapotban lévő temploma

Konstantin tér

A püspöki székesegyház mennyezete

A homlokzata közelebbről

A Nagypréposti palota és előtte a Mária szobor

Az egykori várfal maradványai

Kapu a piachoz

A piac belülről

Siketnémák intézete

Egy mellékutca a belvárosban:

Nem messze a piaristák templomától

Újabb mellékutca

Szobor a püspöki palota mellett

Egy modernebb városrész:

Azért panelek is vannak:

A Gombás patak hídja:

Stációk a város határában:

És az út végén...

Az ország első '48-as emlékműve:

Kirándulóhajó a Dunán:

Ereklyés országzászló (vagyis az alapjába minden történelmi vármegyéből hoztak földet)

A váci komp, megérkezése előtt pár pillanattal:

A dunamenti sétány egyik szobra:

A Hegyes-torony. Az egykori városfal megmaradt saroktornya:

A Fehérek temploma a tetők felett:

A Fehérek temploma belülről -ahogy az elvárható- meglehetősen fehér

A templom oldalában csobogó:

Nem messze a Március 15-e tértől:

A szerb templom hátulja csak a mögötte lévő épület udvarából látható:

Vác azon ritka vidéki települések egyike, melynek zsinagógáját még ma is zsinagógaként használják:

Végül a vasútállomás:

Köszi a javitást. Sejthettem volna, hogy a Siketnémák Intézetének bejárata felett nem Kórház felirat van.

Marha jó képek! Nem tudod, mi az a 3 bontás alatt lévő (?) épület a közepe táján, a burkolatból ítélve a főtér környékén? Kizártnak tartom, hogy ezeket engednék lebontani, valami összevont, faszadizmusos megoldás készül talán ott?

Én tavaly jártam itt és már akkor is hiányzott ennek a három épületnek a teteje.

Vác is a very nice city. I think, if it wouldn't be so near by Budapest, it would grow much bigger in the past like Győr or Pécs. Thank you for the picture!

Chech out the máv-start. As you see, you should start from the Nyugari station with train.
