The Michael Jackson statue installed at Craven Cottage by former Fulham owner Mohamed Al Fayed is set to be removed.

It appears the former Cottagers owner, who sold the club during the summer to American Shahid Khan, has decided he wants to take the tribute to his former friend to one of his other properties.

The statue was installed in 2011 to commemorate the Thriller singer who Fayed insisted was a fan of the Thames side team (despite only being spotted in SW6 once).

However, the decision to install it at the back of the Hammersmith Stand inside the grounds of Craven Cottage was met with ridicule by many supporters of Fulham.

Fayed paid little attention, telling anyone who didn't like the statue, which includes an inscription from Dickson Etuhu and Jackson lyrics, to "go to hell".

Not all Fulham fans disliked the tribute though, with some seeing the entertaining and eccentric side to its instalment.

A Fulham spokesperson said: "The statue is not part of the Riverside development of the stadium and will be returned to the former chairman in due course."

The decision of Fayed to take the statue, rather than it be be removed by the new owners, will come as a relief to Khan after Fayed threatened to chop his moustache off if he did.

From the official site:

Quote:
As you are hopefully aware, following a lengthy negotiation process over various planning conditions, the Club received formal planning permission in July this year from Hammersmith and Fulham council. This decision was then further approved by the GLA.

As a result, we are keen to start building work as soon as is practicable and are in negotiation with the Port of London authority – who manage the River Thames – to obtain a River works licence.

It is the nature of these major construction projects, especially when it involves the River Thames, in a sensitive residential area, that a number of planning hurdles and regulatory bodies need to be satisfied before work can start.

However, we are very much committed to this scheme which will be a major step forward for the Club.

They're waiting for the various conditions of the river works licence to be finalised.

The river works licence was only recently granted, despite the club submitting for a river works licence back in 2012.

Given the hassle it's taken just to get this development past the various authorities, plus the time it'll take to complete the redeveloped Riverside Stand, I think it's worth going ahead with this development, even if they do get relegated.

The new hospitality facilities would certainly help them with their matchday and non-matchday revenue.

Quote:
The Port of London Authority (PLA) Board decided at a meeting on Tuesday, 25 March 2014, to grant a river works licence to Fulham Football Club for the redevelopment of its Riverside stand.

The river works licence application for the proposed stand, which incorporates a walkway over the river, adding a missing riverside link to the Thames Path National Trail, has been under consideration by the PLA for more than a year. During this time the PLA has consulted extensively with river users and other interested parties and received a range of expert advice; particular concerns were raised on the proposed stand’s impact on sailing.

PLA chief executive, Richard Everitt, said:

“The Thames is a hugely valued public space, shared by the whole community. As a result, this was not a simple decision to make. The Board balanced the stakeholder benefits, including improved access to the Thames, with the impact on sailing clubs and their members.

“The licence conditions we will be applying include improving conditions opposite the proposed stand for all river users, while helping to reduce the potential impact on sailing past the stand in certain wind conditions.”

The PLA is now preparing detailed river works licence conditions.

What Khan said a few days ago:

Off the pitch the Riverside Stand project is progressing nicely behind the scenes and we hope to have something to discuss in the near future.

I certainly think it's worth going ahead with, especially the time it'll take to construct and the headache they've had just to get the various planning and building permits in place.

Only that Delaware North has signed a three-year contract to manage the catering at Craven Cottage, in which Delaware North went on to say this:

Quote:
From year three of the deal Delaware North will also be responsible for the catering and hospitality at the club’s new Riverside Stand, which is currently in the planning stage. This investment will provide a new meeting and events space overlooking the river Thames, while a new riverside café, open to the public, will also form part of this development and be included under Delaware North’s remit.
