New bike hire facility earmarked for Clapham Junction

Transport for London (TfL) is now considering plans for a Barclays Cycle Hire facility at Clapham Junction Station.

If approved the docking station would be on Grant Road, next to the station.

Earlier this year the transport authority highlighted a shortlist of potential docking station sites which would be installed across the north of Wandsworth.

The popular bike sharing scheme is due to expand into south west London by spring 2014, including parts of Putney, Wandsworth Town and Battersea.

Following talks with the council, local residents and the Wandsworth Cycling Campaign, TfL has added the new site at Clapham Junction to the shortlist along with additional docking stations at Ram Street in Wandsworth Town and Abyssinia Road in Clapham Junction.

All of the sites highlighted so far are just proposals at this stage and may be subject to change.

Every site will require planning permission before it can be installed.

Wandsworth Council’s transport spokesman Councillor Russell King said: “Local people are genuinely excited at the prospect of Boris Bikes coming to their neighbourhood.

"Selecting the best possible sites will be key to the scheme’s success and we’re continuing to work with TfL to fine-tune the shortlist.

“Clapham Junction is an extremely busy transport hub and it’s very encouraging that potential sites have been identified a short distance from the Grant Road entrance.

The expanded scheme includes the part of Wandsworth which lies east of Putney High Street and north of the South Circular.

Around 60 docking stations would be installed across this area.

£3.8m for Wandsworth transport upgrades

Wandsworth Council has secured a £3.8m grant from the Mayor of London to deliver a series of local transport improvements.
The funding will be targeted towards projects which aim to support local jobs and enhance a range of travel options including roads, cycling and walking.

Key projects in this year's investment programme include:

£100k towards an on-going scheme to improve Clapham Junction town centre and tackle traffic congestion. Works here include improving the road layout, renewing pavements and road surfaces, decluttering footways, planting new trees and upgrading lighting;
*
£260,000 to improve the look and feel of Old York Road between the railway bridge and Ferrier Street.* The station forecourt and adjacent street will be upgraded with granite paving and improved cycle parking. The pedestrian crossing will also be widened and the road surface raised level with the pavements.

£400,000 will go towards the extension of the Barclays Cycle Hire scheme to Wandsworth in 2013. This contribution will be match funded by TfL and will see around 60 docking stations installed across parts of Putney, Wandsworth Town and Battersea.

£350,000 for street and transport improvements in Balham town Centre, including improvements to Bedford Hill and Hildreth Street. These upgrades will complement Balham's on-going Mayor's Outer London Fund investment programme.

LIP funding is awarded to support projects in the London boroughs that will make cycling safer and easier, improve walking facilities, make roads safer, smooth traffic flow and breathe new life into town centres, public squares and local shopping areas to boost the local economy.

Last year in Wandsworth, LIP funded 290 cycle parking spaces, cycle training for 1,100 children and 320 adults, the removal of 650m of guardrail and street clutter, three new accessible bus stops, support for 70 schools participating in walking events and three new off-street electric vehicle charging points.
