[SUBURB | HUIA] - PART 1

NOTES:
*
Huia is a western suburb of Auckland, New Zealand.
*
Huia was previously known as Te Huia as the area is thought to be named after a Māori chief, Te Huia, who stayed in the bay and was so taken by the area that he remained there. The English translation "The Huia" was used into the 1970s, however simply "Huia" has now become more commonplace.
*
The majority of houses in Huia are located along Huia Road, which arcs around Huia Bay and heads west towards Little Huia.
*
Huia has a single store/cafe (Huia Store), which celebrated its 120th anniversary in 2006.
*
On the shores of Huia Bay is Huia Reserve, there are picnic tables, a BBQ, a small playground, basketball half-court and a half pipe for skating. It is close to the Lower Huia Dam walkway.
*
Lower Huia Dam was opened in 1929 and forms part of the water supply for Auckland.
*
The Auckland Council operates several accommodation facilities in the area including the Kiwanis Huia camp, Huia Lodge (which comprises the old school building), Barr cottage (situated on the waterfront in LIttle Huia) and a camping area known as Barn Paddock in the Karamatura farm.
*
Huia Settlers Museum is located near the entrance to the Karamatura Park and is open on Sundays between 1.30pm and 4.30pm. Entry by donation. The museum contains many relics of the Kauri felling and milling and artefacts from the wreck of HMS Orpheus.
*
Old Huia School is past the museum. The school opened in 1894 and closed in 1961 due to dwindling numbers. It is now Huia Lodge. The local State secondary school is Green Bay High School.
*
There are an abundance of walking tracks around the Huia area and there are numerous camp sites in the Karamatura Valley. The highest point in the Waitakere Ranges - Te Toi o Kawharu (474m) [accessible via the Twin Peaks Track] is part of this valley.

[SUBURB | FREEMAN'S BAY] - PART 1

NOTES
*
Freemans Bay is the name of a former bay and now an inner city suburb of Auckland. The historical bay was filled in to a large extent, and lost its shoreline to reclamation works.
*
Historically a poor and often disreputable quarter, it is now one of the wealthiest neighbourhoods.
*
Known for its mix of heritage homes and more recent single-dwelling houses, as well as for its two large parks.
*
During the 1980s and 1990s, the Victorian house stock was gentrified along with the neighbouring suburbs of Ponsonby and St Marys Bay and they are now some of Auckland's most fashionable and desirable residences.
*
Across the road from Victoria Park now stands Victoria Park Market, which occupies the buildings of the previous City Council Works Depot. Built between 1905 & 1915 and known as "the Destructor", this facility burnt a great deal of the city's rubbish for many years. It was closed in 1972, and in 1983 the brick industrial complex was converted into the market.

[SUBURB | GREY LYNN] - PART 1

GREY LYNN
*
Grey Lynn is an inner residential suburb of Auckland, located three kilometres to the west of the city centre. Originally a separate borough, Grey Lynn amalgamated with Auckland City in 1914.
*
Grey Lynn is centred around Grey Lynn Park, which was not part of the original subdivision of 1883, since the land was too steep and too wet for house construction. In 1914 the land was drained and levelled for playing fields. The park is home to the annual Grey Lynn Park Festival, which attracts around 100,000 visitors on the third Saturday in November.
*
The character of the area is often seen as "arty", and one of being a "traditional home to free-thinkers and anti-establishment types"
*
It is often referred to as Gay Lynn due to the high number of gay couples that live in the suburb.
*
Most of the houses were built between the 1880s and the beginning of the First World War. Very few of the houses have been completely replaced by new structures. It is said that the suburb has the highest number of uninterrupted timber Victorian homes in the World.
*
Many of the homes in Grey Lynn were renovated beginning in the 1990s and housing prices increased. Lower-end retail enterprises have gradually been replaced by high-end retail and restaurants. Grey Lynn is fast becoming one of the wealthiest suburbs in the inner-city.

Gorgeous shot ^^

This building and the buildings behind it need a bit of cleaning/maintenance  Almost looks third world
Is there a point that you are trying to make ? It looks like every 5th building in Sydney and /or Melbourne ..... Please be aware that I don't tolerate trolling in my threads (if that is your intention), I don't want this thread to become a circus like the rest of Ozscrapers. This pic that you posted was taken more than a year ago and the building in question has received a lick of paint. It is part of a strip of Art Deco buildings which have systematically been restored (see below). Kindly resize the image that you posted or remove it. Thanks

@matt.perth .... thanks for the pic
