Commercial complex to come up at Thillai Nagar

Quote:

Attired in racing outfits, cyclists geared up to give their best at the 57th State cycling championship, which got under way at the Southern Railway Institute ground here on Friday.

Over 250 cyclists from 23 districts are participating in the championship organised by Tiruchi District Cycling Association. The event features track and road races for boys and girls (under-14, under-16, and under-18 categories) and for men and women. St Thomas Social-Athletic Academy

The nine time European champions chose Tiruchirapalli as the venue of their initiative...
The Real Madrid Foundation inaugurated the St Thomas Social-Athletic Academy in the town of Nazareth, Tiruchirapalli, in Tamil Nadu. The centre will benefit 200 students, 126 boys and 74 girls, aged between 10 and 13 who come from families with scarce resources in this impoverished area of the country.

The children will train twice a week and in addition to the sports activities will also receive academic support, English and maths classes and a supplement to their daily diet. Furthermore, there are plans to organise matches between the schools in the area every three or six months.

The Catholic diocesan bishop father Anthony Devotta attended the inauguration along with international volunteers currently working on the City of Hope and Happiness Foundation projects in the city.

The St Thomas Social-Athletic Academy was borne of the cooperation agreement signed by the Real Madrid Foundation and the City of Hope and Happiness Foundation in November 2012. In February 2013 the Real Madrid Foundation coaching team gave a training course for the academy's four coaches as well as 11 others from the Tiruchirapalli area.

Mukkombu comes under police cover

Quote:
With the district administration issuing a flood alert in the wake of the decision of the Public Works Department to release water from the Mettur dam into the Cauvery, the Tiruchi Rural police have deployed additional manpower at Mukkombu (upper anicut) a favourite picnic spot near here.

Men from the Armed Reserve have been also been drawn and posted at Mukkombu that attracts tourists from various parts of the State.

The police have decided to retain a part of the personnel, originally deployed in view of the Adi Perukku festival, at the tourist spot in the wake of the increased release of water from the Mettur dam.

A temporary outpost has been put up at Mukkombu and security personnel have been posted at different places in the sprawling tourist spot.

Personnel have also been deployed on the Vathalai side to caution public on venturing into the water, say police sources.

The Inspector of Jeeyapuram police station has been instructed to carry out rounds at Mukkombu at frequent intervals as a precautionary measure.

The sources said sand bags have been kept ready at the upper anicut anticipating heavy flow of water in the Cauvery in the coming days.

With water flow expected to increase and a flood alert already issued, police strength has been maintained after the ‘Adi Perukku’ festival primarily to avert drowning at Mukkombu, said a senior police officer.

A few months ago, there were couple of instances in which students got trapped in quicksand and drowned in a pool of water at Mukkombu. One such instance took place in early May and the other in March.

Four persons including a mother and daughter drowned in a pool of water in the Cauvery at Perugamani, a few kilometres from Mukkombu in April-end.

Science Express wows Trichy

Quote:
A special train to promote awareness on biodiversity and safe environment which chugged into the city a few days back is drawing a large number of people. A large number of students were in attendance at the Trichy railway junction on Tuesday to see the exhibits on the train, named Science Express-Biodiversity Express.

SEBS, a specially designed 16-coach AC train, is stationed at Trichy railway junction from Sunday. The train, which commenced its trip from Delhi's Safdarjung station on April 9, arrived at Trichy junction on August 4 in its fifth phase of travel across the country. On the third and penultimate day, more than 21,000 students from various schools and colleges lined up at the junction station to explore the train.

The experience was joyous as well as rewarding to the students. "I feel as if I was exploring the entire nation because I have got abundant information about birds, animals, society, and culture of India. I also became aware about various kinds of pollution. Henceforth, I would do my best to protect our environment particularly in our city," said K Madhanraj, a class 10 student of St Joseph School at Ayyampatti in Trichy.

Ironically, the place where the train is stationed is close to Ariyamangalam composite yard where piles of garbage dumped for many years is polluting the air nearby.

Teachers, who accompanied the students, felt that the visit would help the students understand concepts about biodiversity easily. "It was very useful for both the students and the teachers. The information about the consequence of deforestation, climate change and etc were highly informative and educative," Jennifer, a teacher from Periyar matriculation school, in Trichy said.

On the first day, 11,457 visitors checked into the train. The figure, which was 15,117 on Monday, surged to 21,236. Considering its popularity, a demand has been made to extend its stay in Trichy so that the students from neighbour district could also benefit.

The train will be stationed here for four days till August 7. The next destination for this special train is Koodalnagar railway station in Madurai.

SEBS is a collaborative endeavour of the department of science and technology and ministry of environment and forests.

A railway staff BK Madhavan who took his daughter to visit the train said "We got the chance to know about various things related to their subjects at one go because it is impossible to go everywhere across the country to see such things.

Online retail websites register 65pc rise in traffic this festive season

The online retail websites have registered a 65 percent rise in traffic as compared to last year this festive season, according to a survey by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM).

Commenting on the findings of the survey, D S Rawat, Secretary General, ASSOCHAM, said: “This festive season, there is a 65 percent higher traffic on online retail websites and shopping on ground has taken a back seat due to convenience, rising fuel price, security reasons, online discounts and availability with abundance of choice."

In other cities like Chennai, 30 percent of its population chose to buy daily routine products through e-shopping in 2012-13, which will go to 40-45 percent in current fiscal for gift articles, magazines, home tools, toys, jewelry, beauty products, and sporting goods categories.

The survey also revealed that Non-resident Indians (NRIs) are more actively shopping online during the festive season. During Raksha Bandhan, online shopping by NRIs contributes 60-70 percent of the total shopping, whereas during Diwali, it increases to 90 percent.

Another important finding of the study was that 35 percent of regular shoppers fall in 18-25 age group, 55 percent in 26-35 age group, 8 percent in 36-45 and 2 percent in the age group of 45-60. Interstingly, 85 percent of online shoppers are male as against 15 percent females.

Majority of the working respondents said, “Online retail industry’s business is quite good. Heading out to shop on day off by battling traffic, parking issues, and long lines for bill payment is quite a cumbersome process and this is the main reason for the shift in trend”.

Emerging gifting trends include imported wines and juices and chocolates, coming up as a substitute to mithais, as per the survey. It also pointed out that luxury shopping is an emerging concept in the Indian market. The online shopping boom is not restricted to metros alone. Lucknow ranks high, followed by Jaipur, Dehradun, Nasik, and Trichy.

Most products bought and sold through online portals comprise gift articles (58 percent), books (42 percent), electronic gadgets (41percent), railway tickets (39 percent), apparel accessories (36 percent), apparel (36 percent), computer and peripherals (33 percent), music (24 percent), movies tickets (26 percent), home tools and products (16 percent), home appliances and toys (16 percent), jewellery (15 percent), beauty products (12 percent), health and fitness products (12 percent), apparel gift certificates( 10 percent) and sporting goods (7 percent), the survey added.

Tiruchi library to be developed on the lines of Connemara

Prizes were awarded to the winners of various competitions during the valedictory function of Librarians Day held in the district central library here on Friday.

The library branches in Thuriayur and Manaparai were declared to have the highest number of members and patrons, and donors respectively at the taluk central library level. At the branch level, Ellurpatti, Keerambur, and Puthur emerged winners with maximum number of members, patrons, and donors respectively. At the rural level, Paapakurichi, Neikulam, and Ayyapannagar were winners with maximum number of members, patrons, and donors respectively. Quiz competition winners, and persons who submitted research articles were given congratulatory certificates for their efforts. Children, who had dressed up as famous personalities on the Librarians Day on August 12, were also given certificates.

Chief whip R. Manoharan, who was the chief guest, spoke about the importance of libraries and said that they had become an integral part of people’s lives today.

He added that the Chief Minister was putting all efforts to make the Tiruchi district central library as prominent as the Connemara library in Chennai.

“An amount of Rs. 50 lakh was sanctioned by the Chief Minister to improve facilities at the library. About Rs. 5 lakh had been allotted for the children’s section and Rs. 4 lakh for differently-abled section. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology will be introduced soon, which will help in locating books,” said A.P. Sivakumar, district library officer.

“The Chief Minister’s wish is to digitise every library in the State and she is taking necessary steps towards this end. An amount of Rs. 6 lakh has been sanctioned from the MP local area development fund to develop the district central library,” said P. Kumar, M.P.
