Trichy parks in shambles as civic neglect continues

Quote:
TRICHY: Parks that have been developed by the Trichy Municipal Corporation (TMC) fail to serve their purpose as they are in a pitiable condition with the young and the old keeping away from them. Such is the neglect of open recreational spaces in Trichy that there is no trace of a park that was developed after spending government funds. While the civic body has developed an artificial beach on Cauvery banks as an entertainment arena for the public, playing and exercise equipment at the municipal parks continue to rust, depriving children, youth and old of their benefits.

TMC, one of the major municipal corporations in Tamil Nadu, has 24 parks under its control. Of these, in fact, only one park --- Ibrahim Park in West Boulevard road -- is in good condition and draw visitors, even if they have to pay to use it as it is maintained by an outsourcing agency. Shockingly, rest of the parks are in dire straits and many of them have been under lock and key for years. Without any caretaker, the existing drinking water facilities and latrines are in bad condition and anti-social elements find the parks a safe haven. While parents fear to send their children to the parks, the youth can't have a free workout on the exercise equipment as they are damaged and if one is a fitness freak, one has to join a private gymnasium. As the civic apathy to parks continues, the senior citizens lose out on a comfortable, clean place to socialise. Such is the callousness towards urban recreational avenues that all that remains of a park on Salai road is an empty plot because all the equipment there went missing in the course of time.

TMC makes light of the issue saying that though there are 24 parks in its limits, only 11 of them are greenery parks. While the civic body fails to maintain the already existing park infrastructure, it has no qualms in announcing grandiose plans to develop a science park. "The corporation and the administration have jointly created a summer beach on the banks of Cauvery as a temporary arrangement without realising that such neglected structures can be given a facelift to provide permanent entertainment spot to the public," said Chithra Vijayakumar of Amirtham Social Service Trust.

Now, even if the TMC decides to revive the parks, it has to dip into its own coffers as few private companies are willing to sponsor a park. Though, private and public sector companies still maintain traffic islands in the city and place their advertisements at these vantage points, they don't find any commercial sense to take up the upkeep of the parks as their advertisements would not be visible to more people. When contacted V P Thandapani, TMC commissioner, said, "We are in the process of reviving the abandoned parks. We are trying to mobilise community groups to take care of the parks as we cannot expect private players to maintain them. Moreover, we are now creating a new park on three acres near Uzhavar Santhai."

One good news. The news about Femina Hyper mall's multiplex complex is leaked.

Yes the mall is going to house a 3 screen multiplex with 800 seats capacity.
It is from a chain famous in Tamil Nadu. But the name was not revealed.

This is as I said already, the fourth floor which is in construction now.

Will be revealed to public soon.Dont ask for source now.

Tiruchiites have nowhere to go on a weekend, holiday

Quote:
The “summer beach” on Cauvery river bed at Ammamandapam in the city is nothing but an expanse of sand. A certain area of the river bed has been cleared by the corporation, marking the boundary for enjoying the summer evenings. The lighting arrangement has provided added attraction to the area. The petty vendors selling commonly available murukku , groundnut, sundal , and so on are present here too in good number, like any other area where people assemble in good number. Music programmes, dance performances, pattimandrams and so on provide entertainment to the people only during the weekend holidays.

Despite the limited recreation facilities, hundreds of people, both young and old, throng this summer beach daily during the evening hours. The large gathering even on such a dry river bed with limited facilities and infrastructure, only proves the desperation of the people for recreational facilities in the city and the surrounding areas.

Tiruchi district lags behind Tirunelveli, Coimbatore, Kanyakumari, Tuticorin, Salem, Thanjavur, Nagapattinam, and Ramanathapuram in the number of tourist spots.

Mukkombu and Puliancholai are the only saving grace (Kallanai, though very close to Tiruchi, is in Thanjavur district) and the large gathering at these centres during weekend, festival, and other holidays bears testimony to the fact that people have been craving for spot where they can chill. With both the rivers Cauvery and Coleroon going dry, Mukkombu and Kallanai have become barren.

Only the commercial exhibitions hosted regularly by the private concerns and service organisations provide entertainment to the people of Tiruchi. The Information and Pubic Relations Department last year revived its annual exhibition and it has planned to have the exhibition this year too at the Vestry School ground.

The people have been time and again demanding the Tiruchirapalli City Corporation to create recreation spots. Assurances were given year after year, but nothing tangible has taken place. The city does not have any theme park. Even the “parks” in the residential localities are not being properly maintained.

The park in the Highways Colony, which had a profusion of greenery till a couple of years ago, is now deserted. The play equipment have been damaged and the space is gradually turning into an eyesore. Coimbatore, Madurai and Salem all boast theme parks Tiruchi is the only major city in the State that does not have such a facility. Thanjavur, a municipal town (now upgraded into a corporation), has the well-maintained sprawling Sivagangai Park, where water sports is major attraction. Starved of entertainment, a large number of people from Tiruchi flock Sivagangai Park during weekends and holidays. In the absence of any choice, cinema remains the only option of recreation for the people of Tiruchi. The year has already seen a good number of movies hit the silver screen, and the latest clutch of releases particularly in the holiday period has brought much cheer to movie buffs. Not only the cinemas where new movies have been released, but also the ones screening the old movies too have been doing good business. Tiruneveli, a smaller city than Tiruchi, has mini parks with facilities like see-saw, swings etc in each and every residential locality. These parks came up under the Namakku Naame Scheme and Sudeep Jain, the then Corporation Commissioner was the moving force behind this. The recent Corporation budget has revived the hope of the people of Tiruchi in getting more recreational facilities. The Tiruchi City Corporation has revived proposals on establishing a water theme park and a science park in the city, both mooted nearly a decade ago. The water theme park is planned on a 15-acre site at Panchapur. However, the civic body will seek expert opinion before firming up the proposal.

The science park is to come up at the corporation grounds at Anna Nagar, where a similar project was abandoned midway through some years ago. The corporation has now allocated Rs. 3 crore for the project. The corporation should take immediate steps for creating recreational facilities in the already existing parks, says A. Robert Ambrose, a former officer of the Department of Commercial Taxes. Setting up toy trains and water sports facility, on the lines of Sivagangai Park, does not require huge investment. Besides, the corporation should renovate all the existing parks in the residential localities. Residents’ welfare associations and corporates will only be too glad to help in accomplishing this, Mr. Ambrose says.

Butterfly conservatory spreading its wings

Touted as the first of its kind in Tamil Nadu, the tropical butterfly conservatory in Srirangam is taking shape with phase-I of the project proceeding in full swing.

Planned on 25 acres at the Upper Anicut reserve forest situated between the Cauvery and the Coleroon, the conservatory will encompass outdoor and indoor conservatories, breeding laboratory, shade net house, interpretation facilities, host plant farm, and facilities for visitors.

At present, the outdoor conservatory works, including construction of a huge boundary wall around the facility and ramps at the entrance, are being carried out with the Rs. 1.5 crore fund allocated by the State government.

Construction of the 1-km-long compound wall is nearing completion, say officials of the Forest Department, which is building the park.

Six borewells had been sunk for watering the host / nectar plants planted inside the conservatory. The aim is to foster conservation of butterfly species and educate public about the role played by these plants in maintaining the ecological balance .

A pond has been created inside to enhance the beauty of the conservatory, and make it appear a natural habitat. Creation of lawns and floral patches are the other works currently underway . Seedlings of various tree species have been kept ready for planting to enhance the green cover.

Major works planned in the second phase include indoor conservatory, ‘nakshatra vanam’, and walkways. Tender for the indoor conservatory works is expected to be floated next month, say officials.

A committee that included experts from the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University and Coimbatore-based Institute of Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding designed the conservator.

The indoor butterfly conservatory will simulate natural butterfly habitats with its roofs and sides covered by polycarbonate sheets. The controlled temperature is expected to ensure suitable microclimate within the indoor conservatory inside which suitable nectar and roosting plants would be planted.

The ‘nakshatra vanam' will feature 27 number of trees/ plants species corresponding to 27 stars of the Hindu almanac and 12 trees / plants species corresponding to 12 zodiac signs.

Being set up at a cost of Rs. 8.6 crore, the conservatory is expected to be ready by the end of the current fiscal, say officials.

The conservatory would have about 50 butterfly species, including plain tiger, crimson tip, lemon pansy, striped tiger, and common jezebel.
