- They will be delivered within 36 months from the signing of the contract
- Price: 142 mln euro
- They will be produced by Newag in Poland

Sofia orders Inspiro metro trainsets
30 Sep 2015

The trains for Sofia will be from Siemens' Inspiro family, like the most recent build of trains for the Warszawa metro

BULGARIA: Sofia Metropoliten signed a contract with a Siemens-Newag consortium on September 28 for the supply of 20 three-car trainsets for the future metro Line 3. Delivery is due to take place within 36 months and the contract includes an option for 10 more trains.

The trains will be based on Siemens’ Inspiro family, which is in operation on the Warszawa metro. The air-conditioned trains for Sofia will be fitted with pantographs, as the partly underground Line 3 will have an overhead power supply

Vitosha station M2

Construction of Vitosha station on the southern end of line M2 is progressing according to the plan. It should open in June this year and some 30 000 people are estimated to use it daily since it is located near a transport hub served by many buses and a tram line 10.

Tuesday, March 15, 2016

METROPOLITAN EAD, which operates the two-line metro in the Bulgarian capital Sofia, has awarded Siemens and Newag, Poland, a €140m contract to supply trains and signalling for the first phase of the new Line 3, which is due to open in 2019

The two companies submitted the lowest bid for the contract in competition with CAF in August 2015. The order relates to the first 8km phase of Line 3 with eight stations which will eventually be extended to 18km with 18 stations

I’ve observed a peculiarity of Sofia’s metro network. It behaves like a tram network, because, rather than two separate lines, M1 & M2 has mostly common running route between Silvnitsa & Mladost1. In Mladost 1, two routes bifurcate. Except Brasilia I’ve never seen such running.

Another peculiarity is Serdika station is used by M2 twice, perhaps once on upper level, and twice by lower level. I’ve never seen such anywhere in the world.

In future M2 will be extended south-west ward towards Hladilnika. There is also a plan to extend it as a branch towards north up-to Ilientsi.

The most interesting line will be M3. I don’t understand why they selected line 3 with such train, which will be driver-less, will use overhead wire, and stations will use platform screen doors? All these three futures are much costly. Overhead wire is also costlier in view of maintenance, and also aesthetically poor. Please give some explanation.

The phase includes construction of an 8km line and eight new stations, as well as 20 new trains.Construction of the Metro line 3 will improve public transport access to the centre of Sofia.

In the times of yore the design was about three diameters. The bifurcation in Mladost was counted as just the normal bifurcation of the same diameter (Slivnitsa - Mladost) that is seen in many other countries. However, in the current situation, paying attention to the diameters instead of the actual lines is kind of stupid, so they are transitioning to simply counting the routes serviced. For example,

The Ilientsi branch is going to be serviced by M4, not by M2. M2 and M4 are going to share the line between Maria Louise and Hladilnika, then will bifurcate in future expansions southward (most probably M2 going directly south, while M4 servicing Studentski Grad in some manner). On the other hand, M1 is set to have two new stops in Lyulin on a new line, separate from M2, so it will just share the line with M2 between station Lyulin and station Mladost 1.

M2 uses both levels in both directions. It's essentially a huge loop. If it's weird, the weird part is that the loop isn't around the center of the city.

Won't be driver-less, at least at first. The rest? Pretty sure the answer is somewhere between "corruption" and "we need a reason to throw Metrowagonmash out of the competition". I'm not complaining, diversification is usually helpful for the longevity of the system.
