TRAVEL + TOURISM

Hoorah Let's show off our regions

Canterbury

Population - approx 526,300.

Coat of Arms

Motto - Ergo tua rura manebunt (therefore may your fields remain [unto you])

Flag

Canterbury is New Zealand's largest region, with an approximate area of 42,200 kmē. The region is bounded in the north by the Conway River and to the west by the Southern Alps. The southern boundary is the Waitaki River.

The area is commonly divided into North Canterbury (north of the Rakaia River), Mid Canterbury (from the Rakaia River to the Rangitata River), South Canterbury (south of the Rangitata River) and Christchurch (Christchurch City). For many purposes South Canterbury is considered a separate region, centred on the city of Timaru.

Most of the population of Canterbury lives in a series of large and small towns arranged northeast to southwest along the plains, connected by State Highway 1 and the Main South railway line. These include Christchurch, Ashburton and Timaru, and the smaller Kaiapoi, Dunsandel, Rakaia, Temuka, and Glenavy. Other town of the plains include Rangiora, Leeston, Lincoln, Darfield, Geraldine, Methven and Waimate.

Christchurch is the regional capital of Canterbury, New Zealand. It is the largest city in the South Island, as well as the second largest city and third largest urban area of New Zealand. A coastal city, it is situated just north of Banks Peninsula, midway down the South Island's eastern coast.

The city is named after the Christ Church cathedral, which is itself named after Christ Church, a college at the University of Oxford, and the Cathedral of Oxford. The city was originally known as Christ Church, the written form consolidating by the 1880s.

The usual Māori name Ōtautahi is a shortened form of Te Whenua o Te Potiki-Tautahi - named for the seasonal dwelling of Ngai Tahu chief Tautahi of Port Levy on a bank of the Avon River near to where the Barbadoes Street bridge now stands.

People in New Zealand commonly refer to people from the Canterbury region as Cantabrians, a term also used for people from Cantabria (Spain), although in most contexts this is unlikely to produce confusion. People from the city of Canterbury in England refer to themselves as Cantuarians.

Excellent.

Lets start building lists of what people can do in all the regions, a long with the obvious, internationally recognised natural attractions.

My thoughts exactly!!

Be proud of your region - don't rubbish others!

Contribute to others if you know of something!

Put anything - food, wine, culture, nightlife, entertainment, geat places to stay, things to do, sport, walks, buildings, city break info.........just anything.

Try and add web links as well!!

Actually, the last time I was down visiting the rele's in CHC I found zapping around the CBD best done on roller blades. Yep, that was me the nutter trying to run down the slow arse pedestrians!

A fantastic way to explore central Christchurch, the flatness is the key!

Exploring outside the CBD definitely do it by bike. Cycling is even better here than Hamilton!

Hamilton? lol. Everyone knows Christchurch is the capital of cycling in NZ. It's so easy and comfortable to cover the city that way, not to mention the historical association with cycling there.

Better still would be to sky dive from one of those balloons at altitude over Christchurch, into Hagley Park!

Aoraki/Mt Cook

Go visit and stay at Mt Cook

Aoraki/Mount Cook is the highest mountain in New Zealand, a peak in the Southern Alps range, which runs the length of the West Coast of the South Island. A popular tourist destination, it is also a favourite challenge for mountain climbers. The Tasman Glacier and Hooker Glacier flow down its slopes.

Aoraki means "Cloud Piercer" in the Kāi Tahu dialect of the Māori language. Historically, the Māori name has been spelt Aorangi in the "canonical" Māori form. The English name honours Captain James Cook, who first surveyed and circumnavigated the islands of New Zealand in 1770.

Now that's a very subjective statement. One mans beauty is another's junk. Some of us find Hills covered in dense lush sub tropical forest more appealing than bare brown hills, or a plethora of islands surrounded by the white sails of yachts more appealing than open wind swept ocean. But thats all subjective.
