DUBLIN | U2 Tower | 120m | On Hold

Britain's Foster to design Dublin's U2 Tower

DUBLIN, Oct 12 (Reuters) - A consortium including British architect Norman Foster and Irish rock band U2 has been selected as preferred bidder to build a 120-metre (394 foot) tower at the mouth of Dublin's River Liffey. The planned U2 Tower, which will be Ireland's tallest building but about a quarter of the height of some of the world's tallest skyscrapers, is part of a plan to regenerate the city's docklands area.

A U2 recording studio will be suspended at the top of the tower in an egg-shaped pod.

The development will also include a public viewing platform at 100 metres, a hotel, retail and residential accommodation including affordable housing.

The Dublin Docklands Development Authority said in a statement on Friday it had selected the Geranger Ltd consortium as preferred bidder to design, build and finance the project after considering other schemes.

The consortium includes August Partners which is made of U2's band members and the group's management.

The architect is Norman Foster's firm Foster + Partners, whose past projects have included redesigning Berlin's Reichstag and buildings in London such as the new Wembley Stadium and the "Gherkin" office tower.

"This consortium working with Norman Foster will deliver an enduring landmark for Dublin," said John McLaughlin, director of architecture for the Docklands Authority.

The development is estimated to cost over 200 million euros ($284.3 million) with construction expected to start in 2008 and be completed by 2011, the statement said.

The original design competition was for a 60-metre tower but was later doubled after a change in local planning.

Great news for Dublin!

Dublin currently has no real icon structure however I am sure that once built, this will be a definite focal point in the Dublin Skyline, just like the Turning Torso is for Malmo. Norman Foster is a great architect, he always delivers. I'm sure he will produce something quite beautiful.

One of the proposals is a twisting tower inspired by Turning Torso!

From Wikipedia:
BCDH design

Deselected BCDH design, seen from the North-EastThe BCDH design had a 45-degree twist,[15] half the 90-degree twist of the Turning Torso in Malmö. It had a shoulder height of 100m, to the top floor of apartments,[15] and a pinnacle height of 130m, including a service level and the two-storey penthouse recording studio.[15] There were a total of 36 storeys.[12][1] The footprint was a 26.6m square.[15] The building was primarily to consist of one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments, with commercial premises on the ground and first floors, a two-level basement parking garage, and the penthouse.[15]

The dramatic twisting geometry of the tower posed a significant structural engineering challenge, resolved using a column structure of inclined columns following the twist of the building and the stiff circular core for torsional stability. 26.6 m² floor plates twist by an equal amount per storey about the circular core, housing lifts and services risers as well as a double-deck lift for service/firefighting and penthouse access.[

Damn straight.

I bet the entire structure is constructed from the crushed bones of African children and crude oil is used in all of the water features.

Regardless whether or not you like U2, can we focus on the tower itself please? I'm certain noone wants this to turn into a U2 bitchfest.

Nice tower - it will look good on Dublin's Low-rise skyline because it tapers towards the top. So it shouldn't overpower or impose itself too much.
