Regarding Techno Park Kollam, I do not think this UDF government has any interest in the development and expansion of it. But I have good hope in the next government that there will be lot of prospects in the park's development. Lets hope for the best.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: If everything goes as planned, Kollam could well be the first district in the state to be free of water scarcity. The Kollam district panchayat has embarked on a massive project to artificially recharge wells in the panchayats.
The target is one lakh wells and the project is being implemented at a cost of Rs 8 crore. The district panchayat has mobilized funds from the employment guarantee scheme and water shed conservation project for the purpose.

The project began with the artificial recharge of a well at the Kollam district panchayat office on the occasion of World Water Day on March 2. It has already completed the recharge works in 6,000 wells in the district, including Chadayamangalam, Anchal, Chittumala, Pathanapuram and Kottarakkara. Technical support is provided by the communication and capacity development unit of water resources department. A technical committee of district panchayat has also been set up to help people belonging to SC/ST community, BPL category and small scale farmers to install recharge units free of cost.

According to district panchayat president S Jayamohan, after a well was recharged at a government LP school at Vilakkuvettom, Punalur, it was found that water level in about 200 wells around that area had increased. "Only the plan is novel, the methods are all traditional which require some technical support. After the issues regarding the water scarcity was reported in the district, the self-sustenance plan was designed," said Jayamohan.

In an artificial well recharge unit, the rain water collected in the terrace or steeply pitched roof (by using rain gutter-- a narrow pipe which collects rainwater) is transferred to a tank kept near the well, containing metal pieces, stones, sand and charcoal pieces in different layers to purify the rain water. The purified water from the tank is transferred to the well through pipes with an attached filter. There is no need for a water connection to the well, if a one-meter deep pit is dug at about 5 to 10 ft away and at a higher level space from the well and given a pipe connection from the roof of the house to the pit.

In case water level in the well exceeds, it can be controlled through the pipe connection and the flow can be diverted to other storage units. It would cost Rs 7,000 to 10,000 depending upon the distance of the well from the tank with a capacity of 300 liters.

"Artificial recharge units need to be replicated and people should be made aware of such a cheaply available facility. It is estimated that, if 3,000 mm of rain is received in a year, then about 3,000 lakh liters of water can be obtained from a well recharge unit, set up in a 1,000 sq ft area. If done in a large scale it can provide solution to the decreasing level of water table," said director of the communication and capacity development unit of water resource department V Subhash Chandra Bose.

One thing is very important here. Though the Kerala government is not favoring any significant projects related to infrastructure development of Kollam's basic needs, the great thing that happens slowly and gradually is the well planned vision and the root based development that the district panchayath envisages for the enhancement of the basic facilities of people in Kollam.

When the agricultural land is dwindling alarmingly in other Kerala districts, great projects in terms of expanding agricultural land from 500 hectares to 15000 hectares, focus on fishery and poultry focus on primary healthcare, and most importantly projects such as 1 Lakh wells, well recharging, rain water harvesting, and many, many projects pave a bright future for Kollam district.

Focus on organic vegetation in vacant spaces including open areas in schools, offices, temples are classic examples of vision based plan.

This should be a model for development for other districts as well and development is not just about buildings, apartments, malls, and metro, it is also about the basics else there will be a day that spell doom.

The most import thing for Kollam is the need to preserve our lakes, other waterbodies, and the wetlands. Hope district panchayath will give more focus on our waterbody preservation including ponds as Kollam is one of the districts with the most number of ponds in Kerala.

SAF Games Kerala 2015: Kollam likely to host Hockey and some watersports events

So, if everything goes well, Kollam may be lucky to host some of the international events as part of South Asian Federation (SAF) Games next November - December.

Kollam and Alleppy will host some of the events apart from the main venue TVM.

Regarding Kollam, it is almost certain that Hockey is the main event as Kollam boasts the only international standard hockey turf in Kerala. Also, Kollam has many waterbodies within the core city and this may prompt authorities to have some watersport related events here though Alleppy is a strong contentor.

Lets hope some infrastructure investment as part of the games in Kollam in terms of roads in the city, cleaning of Ashtamudi Lake, and also for the Ashrmam Hockey stadium related enhancement.
