Hipsters in my opinion have ZERO taste in music and are very short on social skills spending their entire waking hours on their IPAD and listening to today's horrid music.

Lot of great conviences today that my generation never had {like this internet} but I thank the Maker everyday that I was raised on the great music of the 70s and 80s.

As far as Canada.....
Montreal.........Mile End & Plateau and Toronto...........Queen West and Kensington Market although, and correct me if I'm wrong, but Canada doesn't seem to be into the whole hipster thing as much as other countries. I would have to say urban Canada is more Bohemian than Hipster.

That's largely how I see it too. Those labeled 'hipsters' always come off more like cookie cutter clones imitating what they think will make them interesting. Strip away the veneer and you'll find out pretty fast if someone's a bore or has some thing fresh to contribute.

For me, 'hip' has more to do with how people think, create, behave, react, live, articulate, etc.

Of all cities in the indian subcontinent, dhaka is probably the most hipster-ish, it was home artisans, craftsman, entertainers and musicians alike, and Still is, the city is a hub of culture and festivity and I just wanted to show you. In fact our artisans and musicians are revered, Jamadi Muslin found itself to UNESCO as a Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity and Baul was included in the list of "Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity" by UNESCO

Dhaka city, largest Alpona (Hand Painting) in the world for the Bengali new year.

Holi in Dhaka

Rickshaw wallas and their Rickshaws

Bauls in Dhaka.

Part of the problem with this conversation is that hipster means different things in different places and to different people. For example in Minneapolis it is generally synonymous with bohemian, but in cities like LA or Chicago it seems to refer to a more narrowly defined group of over groomed young bourgeoisie. Minneapolis has some of those people too, but freaks and weirdos are in larger numbers.

One definition seems to come from the era of internet social media while the other is older.

I would call hipsterism as the part of the post-modern cultural globalization. That's why you have the same type of organic industrial cafés, wool handmade ponchos and bearded old-school cyclists everywhere, from San Francisco to Moscow, from London to Tokyo. Even the small city like Bratislava, Slovakia, is now experiencing the hipster revolution:

Gorila Urban Space, the most expensive and the most popular café in the city inspired by New York bistros.

Regal Burger, the best organic burgers in Central Europe.

"Šafko", bunch of ship containers in the one of the Bratislava squares changed onto local design hub.

"Na Streche" (On the Roof), community café with community garden.

Hipster is another word for someone with no social skills or manners.

A bunch of kids meeting at a café and then not talking to each other but rather all sitting there on their IPads or standing in lines on the phone while someone is talking to them or trying to get by.

They are also apolitical, they only get excited when the next gadget is coming onto market.

Poor social skills, stand for nothing, and lousy taste in music......they are a lot of things but "hip" is definitely not one of them.

Generalize much? What is it with the hipster-bashing?

It is a pretty natural reaction to the uber-globalized, over-commercialized, over-streamlined, hyper-connected and hyper-competitive world we live in.

The monotony of the same Pottery Barns, Whole Foods, JCrews, Michael Bay-Vin Diesel megaplex movies, Comfort Inns and Olive Gardens you see in every corner of the country is not for everyone. There was bound to be a counter-culture to the aggressive commercialism and materialistic zeitgeist. No surprise there.

I happen to like Williamsburg, NYC or Portland, Ore simply for being different and thereby turning formerly sleepy towns into real magnets. A city like Detroit can only hope that hipsters take over and make the place interesting again.

Ssiguy, hipsters are hardly that. The definition "hipster" may be new, but they have existed in some form since WWII. They are far from idiots.

hipsters and ipads is such a horrible generalization, have you honestly ever spent some time sitting in one of these cafes? talked to one of these people? They are the same as you, they have social lives, worries, successes, failures, love, hate, etc. Just because they like different clothes, coffee, and music doesn't mean they don't lead successful lives. They open businesses, organize events, eat out, etc.

Though Buenos Aires isn't exactly what it could be called "hipster city", there is a small part in the Palermo neighborhood denominated "Palermo Soho" where this kind of movement has more presence:

Definitely. There are plenty of hipsters in SF (city-proper). They've always been around, but the city (the mission district in particular) earned a reputation as a hipster mecca of sorts, back around 2005 or 2006, and from that point on the population of hipsters exploded. As the city became extra popular/trendy among hipster types (as well as yuppie/techie types a few years later), gentrification sped up a great deal, especially in the mission district and a few other hipster favorite neighborhoods around the city (hayes valley, the panhandle, lower haight). Housing prices have gotten so insane that hipster types are increasingly opting to move to cheaper places like Oakland instead of SF proper (and now housing prices are rising at an insane rate in Oakland too. Gotta love having a housing supply shortage + high demand + typical human greed)...not that Oakland isn't worthy of hipster praise on its own. It's a very interesting, beautiful, and diverse place, that's more urban and lively than 90% of America. Though I wouldn't say SF's hipster population has shrunk, it's just stopped growing as fast.

Stockholm is definitely a hipster city, and it is annoying as hell. People are rude, self-centred and obnoxious. They'll stop in the middle of the stairs in the metro and take selfies or answer texts. They'll only consider themselves and they all think they're so "ultra stylish".
