Thik tai, These are the personalities that the society should have celebrated and looked up to. Unfortunately the mainstream media is more interested in sensational and often negative news than playing the fourth pillar of democracy let alone being the conscience keeper of a democracy.

They are more interested in reality shows than these. Thankfully GetBengal is a new media outlet started by a very enterprising and motivated person from Kolkata/Bengal which is doing a great job of unearthing such gems !

West Bengal seems to have made huge improvements in many health parameters compared to the previous survey.

Note that the SRS 2016 report puts the TFR for West Bengal is 1.6 which is lowest in the country along with a couple more states TN and Delhi. Strangely all three have lower TFR than Kerala (1.8). Not a big deal but interesting.
strange that the nfhs site is down..i had accessed the site yesterday and it was up and running just fine..had opened the fact sheet for bengal and the tfr was 1.8

The crude death rate is 5.8 for West Bengal and it is behind Delhi (4.0), J&K (5.0) and Jharkhand (5.5).

Infant Mortality Rate has also gone down to 25 but seven other states have done better.

NeoNatal mortality rate is 17 and five other states have lower rates than WB.
I am curious to know, does the infant mortality rate take into account their actual place of origin, or are the numbers taken directly from hospital records?

I've experienced that in places like Malda, where crib deaths are a recurring phenomenon, the patients are mostly from neighboring districts of Pakur (Jharkhand) and Katihar (Bihar) where malnutrition is high and healthcare is non existent.

I used to hear back then from one of my school friends, whose dad worked in Malda Zilla Hospital, that most of these mothers came in precarious conditions with undernourishment of the extreme kind in huge numbers such that they are beyond the doctor's means of saving.
