"good" being the operative word. There are plenty of buildings from the late 70s and 80s where it was automatically assumed that anything covered in brick would turn out well and really didnt!

I don't mind this new London vernacular but at the same time I just wonder if its going to become really dull really quickly. It's just so safe and almost 'comfort architecture'. Say what you like about the residential developments of the last decade but at least they had a bit of individuality and despite the sometimes dubious quality at least they tried to make a bit more of a memorable 'landmark' in terms of people being able to recognise their location wherever they were in the city.
I'm beginning to wonder what the difference is between these blocks and the ones in Nine Elms, or Bromley-by-Bow, Kings Cross, Canada Water or the planned Chobham Manor in the Olympic Park. Are they all by the same architect, same developers, of the same tenure, etc. Who knows? They all look alike and samey. I'm just not convinced yet the style is being progressed each time to make them individual enough, and it will just become a lazy template to knock up a development wherever, that could be mistaken for any other one elsewhere in the city. That said, I do like the style in terms of its bold, distinct chunkiness that echoes a bit of English industrial and its quite well 'grounded' that I think gives it a real London feel. I just hope there's enough flair and imagination to progress it in the latter half of this decade and not simply just repeating the same because it's being received quite well by people.

I will actually miss that era of 70s red brick buildings with brown windows that were so commonplace, none of them will ever live long enough to be saved as architecturally interesting or unique, but it was an inoffensive vernacular that at times was used to great effect. I think the World's End estate is a good example.

I would be more than happy if the final build came up to this standard and quality, as appearing in Kings X.

The World End's estate is great, but outside of inner West and NW London that style isn't really common. If only they built more.
Some of the brick blocks are dull, but they're still miles ahead of much being built beyond zone 2. There are two new builds where I live which are truly awful, not only because they feature cheap-looking panels, but because the colours are all wrong. One has an absurd 6 different colours, from cream and orange to sky blue and grey, but not in any sort of pattern. Another features random bits of highlighter yellow against a sea of grey and beige. There is nothing wrong with being bold and colourful, but too often there are simply too many of them with no cohesion, just splashed on. |
