They've outgrown the old office, and this will provide a retail/cafe space, a roof terrace for performance and a view of the premieres for television crews whilst also adding some modern flair.

That's perfectly good rationale for replacing the current ticket office, which is twee but charming. The proposed replacement looks to me attractive by night and ugly by day; I think they could do better.

I don't mind it but surely they could have designed the 'back' a bit better than just repeating the pattern and filling it with vent grills.

I know it's not finished yet but they have appeared to make it look worse. There is one large screen at the front and the VUE sign at the top looks very off. I was hoping for a bit more detail considering the location.

New Hotel for Leicester Square: Hotel Indigo - 1 Leicester Square

Sorry if this has already been posted - I dont recall seeing anything about it. 1 Leicester Square is being converted into a new Hotel Indigo. I think this is the building to the right of the W Hotel (facing it) which is currently a real mess, so Im pleased something is being done about it. The Hotel Indigo brand usually tries to embrace the flavour of the local area so I hope they enhance this Art Deco style building. I guess its not going to be a new build.. That said I may have the wrong building in mind!

Whilst the VUE cinema looks better, it would have been great if they'd done a proper job here and cleaned the facade and repaired/repainted the windows. It still looks like it needs some TLC.

I was reading something from the 1938 opening over the weekend tho; and apparently 'A feature of the new theatre...is the quilting of the walls with asbestos'...

Well jeez I guess they thought it was a radical way to get the audience to have a drink at the bar..

My friend was a bit surprised when I suddenly shouted out "Gillette!", became enraged and grappled to get my camera out quickly enough, but what the hell! After all that nonsense over conservation areas and the ex-screen where Home nightclub used to be just because it advertised some events that were not cinema related, Westminster Council allows this! Or maybe they just haven't noticed yet...

The whole of Leicester Square has changed so much in the last 30 years -so much better that it is no longer a roundabout with decent buildings adding to the ambiance rather than everything being run down and old.

because it makes it even less obvious that it is the place to go to buy official discount tickets so all the crappy semi-pop-up tourist scam booth shops can breathe a sigh of relief and live on and make ever more profits. It looks good at least though.
