Belgian firm to start work on solar project

THE LOCAL UNIT of Belgium-based Enfinity Group is set to proceed with the development of its first solar power project in the country this June, an official of the Energy department said last week.

Enfinity Philippines Renewable Resources, Inc. last March 11 secured confirmation of commerciality for its planned 10-megawatt (MW) power project in Davao del Sur, according to Mario C. Marasigan, director of the department’s Renewable Energy Management Bureau.

“Enfinity’s solar power project in Digos is eyed to be completed in October this year at a cost of around $20 million,” Mr. Marasigan said in a text message on Tuesday last week.

“Based on their work program, construction work will start this June.”

Enfinity Philippines President Dennis Chan Ibarra said in December last year that the company was looking to develop more than 20 solar projects in the country, three of which are planned to start this year.

Mr. Marasigan said Enfinity Philippines has two solar projects that are currently being evaluated for a confirmation of commerciality.

These involve a 10-MW plant in Clark Freeport Zone, Pampanga and a 5-MW plant in Cavite Economic Zone.

Enfinity Philippines’ Mr. Ibarra last year expressed optimism that “2014 will be a breakthrough year for the company” as its solar projects move forward.

At the same time, the official said more projects will be developed in the “next couple of years.”

MORE PLANTS PLANNED
Data from the Energy department showed that Enfinity Philippines has already secured service contracts for the following solar plants: a 2-MW plant in Casiguran, Aurora; 2 MW in Burdeos, Quezon; 1 MW in Quezon, Palawan; and 10 MW in Puerto Princesa City, also in Palawan.

In Tarlac, the company will develop 10-MW plant each in Tarlac City, Sta. Ignacia, Victoria, Concepcion, Gerona and Sinait.

Another 10-MW facility is planned in Subic, Zambales; and a 1-MW plant in San Fernando, Romblon.

In Cebu, Enfinity Philippines’ is looking at a 1-MW facility in Poro and 10-MW plant in Lapu-Lapu City; while another 10 MW is eyed in Javier, Leyte.

Another 10-MW plant is planned in Hagonoy, Davao del Sur; while Zamboanga will have a 1-MW plant on Sacol Island; and two more 10 MW are planned in Zamboanga City.

Plants will also rise in Libjo, Surigao del Norte and Balimbing, Tawi-Tawi with a capacity of 1 MW and 2 MW, respectively.

Lastly, three 10-MW plants are eyed in Butuan City, Agusan del Norte.

Enfinity Philippines will source solar panels for these projects from various suppliers in China, United States and Europe, according to Mr. Ibarra.

The Enfinity Group was established in 2005 to engage in development of solar technologies in Europe, North America and Asia Pacific. -- Claire-Ann Marie C. Feliciano
