Kwun Tong (觀塘) Photos

Another beautiful weekend prompted a long walk under the sun. This time I chose Kwun Tong, one of the dirty industrial towns on the southeast side of Kowloon. It has made the headlines lately with a couple of large redevelopments that will transform the town centre and make it an emerging secondary business district. A new cruise terminal will soon start construction just off the coast at the former Kai Tak airport runway tip.

1. apm is now a very successful new mall, topped by a skyscraper that bears the Bank of East Asia's name.

2. But to be honest I wouldn't live here even if it were free.

7. Some of the streets around the town square are fairly run-down, but the streets are still very vibrant with the likes of the average working class people wandering about.

17. I repeat ... I won't live here even if it's free.

20. But walk out a few more blocks and the mood changes. The buildings suddenly looked cleaner, with a few more trees and spacing.

25. This looks like a very old type of public housing - a midrise!

32. On the other side of the street, the buildings don't look so bad. The street itself is fairly quiet with minimal traffic. Quite a surprise considering it's Kwun Tong.

Nice photos. I like the idea that you go for walks in random districts in HK just to get a feel for it and take photos.

Like being a tourist at home.

Here's the reference point - apm. On the other side lie the industrial lands.

Cross .. and see there is redevelopment!

Here's a redevelopment - Landmark East, 2 buildings of at least 40 stories each.

What's a hotel doing in this part of town?

Not so industrial after all?

If I didn't tell you before, you probably didn't realize it was a very smoggy day.

My UPC entry

A nice-looking bathroom.

Now here's another surprise - a brand new skyscraper bearing the name of a local travel agency!

A mouthful of naiveness.

Even if it were free? Why not? Never underestimate freeness.

It's actually very noisy with the main street right downstairs. I can't imagine opening the windows during the day. There are also a lot of minibuses parked there as well, many of them idling. The living environment isn't exactly middle class at all.

Quite a nice view but in a highly-underutilized area. Maybe after a more redevelopments a developer will come in and put up some residentials to take advantage of the harbour and skyline views.

Outstanding. I thought this type of Hong Kong was all gone. I'm glad to have seen this thread. I'd love to know more about the people that live here - what do they do, where do they go to school, are they happy?

The workers here are primarily the non-essential departments that are too costly to keep in Central. Manulife, Standard Chartered, and Bank of East Asia have functions based here.

For the residents, they're among the lower-income brackets. The centre of Kwun Tong comprises of very old buildings, many of which haven't been maintained well. But the masses live in housing estates radiating from the core and up along the hills.
