CTICC to host 2010 cultural extravaganza

Announcement
09 November 2009

Entire convention centre to be transformed into new nation, for 32 days

Cape Town - South African entrepreneurs, Global Icons today announced an investment related to the upcoming world soccer event to be hosted in South Africa next year. This group of entrepreneurs have secured the entire Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) to host an event like the world has never seen or experienced before - The Global Icons Expo-Tainment Experience, which will encapsulate 32 nations under one roof for a one of a kind cultural extravaganza. To date this is by far the highest investment from a single booking that the CTICC has secured since its opening.
Inspired by the festivities surrounding the world's biggest sporting event next year, the Global Icons Expo-Tainment Experience will bring together nations, corporates, brands and fans under one roof. The expo component will include 24 country pavilions over 10 000 m² exhibition space for 32 days in June and July.
The Global Icons Expo-Tainment Experience will transform the entire CTICC into a different nation every day and create an interactive global village that is the ideal place for countries to showcase their nations to the world. This will be the perfect destination for a family day out, a corporate function or simply as a place for soccer fans to rejoice in the day's victories. Designer hospitality suites and a grand ballroom will be the ultimate scene for companies to entertain their special clients.
As businesses and brands are currently all looking for opportunities to capitalise or host local and international guests around this massive sporting opportunity, Global Icons saw the need in the marketplace for an entertainment and hospitality experience in a safe and secure environment and have now filled that gap. They are confident that this offering is going to be a sought after solution.
"As the world's eyes are upon this nation we have this single opportunity to showcase that we are capable of putting on major world class events. Our team includes leaders in the field of entertainment, exhibitions, hospitality, fashion and logistics. We are also very fortunate to be hosting Global Icons at a world class venue thereby ensuring all local and international visitors of an unforgettable African experience." commented Abbas Jamie of Global Icons.
The Global Icons Expo-Tainment Experience is endorsed by the Department of the Premier's 2010 Unit and according to Dr Laurine Platzky, the 2010 FIFA World Cup Co-ordinator for the department, the event will position the Western Cape as an economic force and will provide the people of the province with an opportunity to share the rich cultural diversity with the rest of the world.

2010 boat gives new meaning to floated pass
By Clayton Barnes - 2010 Writer

If you spot an oversized soccer ball floating in the bay during the 2010 World Cup, don't panic. It's just a boat.

Sixteen floating soccer balls, made of fibreglass, are being built in Cape Town for the tournament.

The specially designed boats will sail from the canal at the Cape Town International Convention Centre past the Cape Grace Hotel and into the bay at the V&A Waterfront every day during the event, says Belgian boat designer Peter Jacops.

The floating soccer balls are propelled by electric motorsThe boats, each equipped with a mini-bar, plasma screens and comfortable seats, are being built by 10 youths at the Whisper Boat Building Academy for the deaf in Khayelitsha.

"The boats are safe and green," Jacops, the concept developer, said on Monday. "The floating soccer balls are propelled by electric motors and their batteries will be charged on site using solar energy."

There is enough space for eight adults on each boat and the price for a cruise will be established closer to the tournament.

Each boat, with all the features, costs about R300 000 to build.

"Fans can book the floating soccer ball for a cruise or for the night," said Jacops. "There is a mini-bar on board and we will have cheese and wine."

'I made a few sketches and came up with this'The idea of building a floating soccer ball for the World Cup came to him earlier in 2009 "in the midst of the recession", said Jacops.

"The boat-building industry was dead. I started thinking and then realised that the World Cup was the perfect opportunity. I made a few sketches and came up with this."

The Dutch consulate in Cape Town was first to place an order. Holland's floating soccer ball for the World Cup will be orange, with the country's tourism logo attached.

That ball is set to be ready by the end of November and will be showcased at the World Cup final draw on December 4.

Assembling the boat on Monday, boat builder Wayne Robertson, of Wayne Robertson Yachts, said: "I've built more than 400 catamarans in my life but building a floating soccer ball was most challenging.

"This is a first and something unique. The boat has been designed in such a way that it is easy to ship."

One floating soccer ball took about three weeks to build, he said.

And the boats are not expected to disappear after the World Cup. Jacops has secured a contract with the V&A Waterfront to operate in the bay for at least five years.

"For the World Cup period, we can't have non-Fifa sponsors advertising on the balls," he said.

Speaking through a sign language interpreter, Olwethu Masebeni of the Whisper Boat Building Academy gave a thumbs up when asked how he felt about being involved with the project.

"This is a great opportunity," he said.

The youths work on the project every day and are paid a stipend.

Expo-tainment Experience planned for CTICC during 2010 FIFA World Cup

  • Expo-tainment Experience planned for CTICC during 2010 FIFA World Cup

With only eight days of matches being played in the Mother City, Cape Town-based company, Global Icons, asked the question: ‘So what are people going to do for the other 23 days?’ and came up with the concept of the Expo-tainment Experience.
Bringing together 24 nations, this month-long event, run to coincide with the 2010 FIFA World Cup, will not only provide a great experience for World Cup visitors an enhance the Cape Town brand, but will be priced at an entrance level suitable for all Capetonians – and, according to Jamie: ‘More reasonable than many other events held at the CTICC.’
The Expo-tainment Experience, to be run at the Cape Town International Convention Centre from 10 June to 11 July 2010, will feature:
  • 24 countries showcased in 24 pavilions across 10 000m2;
  • Tourism, trade and sport exhibits;
  • VIP/business hospitality suites;
  • the opportunity for each participating country to host a National Day;
  • live music and entertainment across seven stages as well as roving artists. This will include the launch of Global icons ‘Rhythms over Table Mountain’ – a musical by performer and director Basil Appollis, with daily performances.
  • Fashion shows and an exclusive interactive fashion zone.
  • Other inter-active zones: TravelZone (travel destinations), TechZone (latest games and technology), FitZone (Health & fitness products), KidZone (restaurant with supervised play area).
  • Special soccer viewing areas to ensure all visitors (and their families) join in the soccer fever and participate in a day of fun and entertainment.
The Expo-tainment event has already received endorsement from the Mandela Rhodes Foundation (to be the main charitable beneficiary of Global Icons 2010); the Office of the Premier of the Provincial Government of the Western Cape (via Dr Laurine Platzky, head of the 2010 Co-ordinating Committee for the PGWC); and WESGRO.).

UK expert to advise on V&A security during World Cup

November 30, 2009 Edition 1
ANÉL LEWIS
A FORMER POLICE superintendent from Liverpool, experienced in managing large crowds of soccer fans, has been brought in to bolster security measures at the V&A Waterfront for the World Cup.
David Green, who took over as chief executive of the Waterfront nine months ago, said: "We want Capetonians and tourists to feel safe."
Crowds of about 100 000 people, equivalent to a New Year's Eve gathering, are expected to throng to the Waterfront daily during the event.

But Green said safety would be paramount.
There were 1 200 CCTV cameras at the Waterfront, and a highly trained team of security staff was on site.
Green said the centre's security staff's training was modelled on Britain's bobby system.

Dressed in distinctive uniforms and white hats, the officers are intended to be a visible deterrent to criminals - and serve as guides and sources of information for visitors.

Green said extra security would be brought in for the World Cup as the Waterfront would be one of the "hubs" of activities.
People would go shopping and seek entertainment at the Waterfront, which was conveniently near the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) and the Cape Town Stadium.
To accommodate the crowds expected, the boundaries of the Waterfront would be expanded, Green said.
There would be big screens in four zones around the Waterfront, including at the Breakwater and on the Granger Bay side.
While the focus would be on the CTICC and Long Street for the draw on Friday, the Waterfront had to present Cape Town in the best possible light, Green said.

"We are trying to up the game significantly."
Although 40 percent of the Waterfront site had yet to be developed, there were no cranes dotting the area's skyline, Green said.
He said the World Cup was an opportunity to "take a pause and focus on what we have got".
The One&Only hotel was complete and the canal open.
After the World Cup, discussions about continuing the development of the Waterfront precinct would be resumed.
The Waterfront had not been immune to the effects of the global recession but, as a "profitable and mature" entity, it would be able to withstand the economic pressures, Green said.

He was pragmatic about the financial difficulties of Dubai World, which through its investment company, Istithmar, has a 37.5 percent stake in the Waterfront.

Dubai World is reportedly battling to pay creditors instalments due on its debt of $59 billion (about R443bn today).
Green said Dubai World's financial problems would not affect the daily running of the Waterfront.

"We have ring-fenced funding. Ownership will come and go," he said.
"What's important is that (the Waterfront) is run well."

Delays in CT transport projects
2009-12-08 19:30

Cape Town - A Parliamentary written reply given by Transport Minister Sbu Ndebele to Don Gumede of the ANC shows that the transport network being prepared for the Soccer World Cup in Cape Town is a long way from being ready for the event.

According to the reply circulated on Tuesday, bus-based park and ride facilities which were supposed to have been competed in October this year are still only 43% complete.

A city-wide non-motorised transport plan involving a number of upgrades to the pedestrian and bicycle network in the CBD and the Somerset Road areas was supposed to have been finished in August. The project is currently 28% completed.

A project aimed at keeping pedestrians separated from the traffic on the Western Boulevard had a planned completion date of October. It is currently 71% completed.

Pedestrian improvements worth R55m at Green Point stadium have only been 59% completed although the planned completion date was November this year.

An integrated fare management system which was to be one of the key components of the public transport improvement programme for the province is currently standing at 15% completeness with a planned completion date of 30 October 2009.

A non-motorised transport bridge to Bhunga Avenue over the N2, as well as NMT links between Langa and the Klipfontein Corridor/Athlone Stadium were planned for completion on 15 October. The project is only 74% complete.

The city has embarked on intelligent transport management system (ITS) to improve network operations on a city-wide basis. The planned completion date was 31 January 2009, but the project is currently only 32% completed.

It was allocated an amount of R78m. Another project that involved the provision of ITS and CCV facilities currently stands at 98% though it was planned to be completed on 30 August.

Other cities are also having problems, but many of the projects in Gauteng are pretty much on time and 100% complete.

Some projects are delayed but on the whole, like CT stadium, Cape Town sets realistic targets and adjusts these according to funding and the contractors reports rather than creating willy nilly dreamworld deadlines that aren't actually the target.

Training stadiums will soon be pitch perfect
By Clayton Barnes
2010 Writer

The 10 World Cup teams set to play their group-stage matches in Cape Town will train on two of the country's finest pitches, says the city.

The Athlone and Philippi stadiums have been upgraded and fitted with state-of-the-art Fifa-approved pitches for the tournament.

The two stadiums will be used as World Cup training venues for teams before matches.

France and Uruguay will be the first teams to practise in the upgraded stadiums before their opening match in Cape Town on June 11.

Other teams that will use the venues include England, Algeria, Cameroon, the Netherlands, Italy, Paraguay, Portugal and Korea DPR.

Shameel Ho-Kim, the city's 2010 training venues co-ordinator, said that apart from the world-class pitch, which still needed some work, the Athlone Stadium revamp was virtually complete.

The pitch would be "Fifa-ready" by the end of February. "No date has yet been set for the official opening, but it will be early next year," said Ho-Kim.

Technical teams from soccer nations, including France and Italy, visited the stadium after the final draw and were "satisfied", he said.

"The inspection was unfortunately very rushed, with most teams flying out by midday, but they were generally very happy."

Ho-Kim said the teams' main concerns were about the pitch, players' and management facilities, cloakrooms, the boardroom and conference rooms.

After the R400 million upgrade, the stadium will be able to seat 30 000 spectators. Before the upgrade it could take only 12 000.

Meanwhile, the new Philippi stadium is set to be opened next month.

Laurine Platzky, the province's 2010 co-ordinator, said the stadium had undergone a R54-million upgrade over the past year.

She said the stadium was still without an operator but several community groups had expressed interest.

"We will consider their proposals. They are currently getting together to submit a combined proposal," said Platzky.

"A decision will be made by February."

The tenant will be responsible for implementing a youth and soccer development programme, and for the maintenance of the precinct, the stadium and the world-class soccer pitch.

Interested parties were first invited to tender in November last year, and the process was expected to have been wrapped up by January this year. Last month the provincial government again embarked on a mission to find a suitable contractor.

Philippi was one of 27 areas in the Western Cape identified for social transformation, and is home to the highest number of registered amateur football clubs in the province.

The stadium is close to Philippi train station and the long-distance bus terminus, and is easily accessible by public transport.

The facility is set to be able to accommodate 3nbsp;000 spectators.

The changing rooms and ablution facilities have also been upgraded. Construction will be completed next month and the pitch will be ready for use next May, said Platzky.
