Saqqara | Pyramid of Djoser | Renovation | U/C

British engineers called in to save Egypt’s oldest pyramid

Quote:
British engineers have won a £1.8million contract to rescue Egypt’s oldest pyramid.

Specialists who also worked on Windsor Castle following the fire of 1992 will use their expertise to preserve the Pyramid of Djoser 30km (19 miles) south of Cairo.
A team from Cintec in Newport, south Wales, will repair the landmark – also known as the Step Pyramid – which almost collapsed when an earthquake struck nearly 20 years ago.
‘The Step Pyramid project is of particular importance to us,’ said Peter James, managing director of Cintec.
‘The entire structure could be destroyed at any point due to the damage on the ceiling and roof caused by the earthquake.’
His engineers, who have also worked on restoration projects at Buckingham Palace and The White House in the US, plan to use self-inflating water-filled bags to support collapsed parts of the building while they work.

The 62m (200ft) pyramid was built about 2650BC as a burial place for Pharaoh Djoser – thought by some scholars to be the first king of the third dynasty of Egypt.

PS Not sure if you'd call this renovation. but this almost shocked me while I was reading the paper this morning.

Egypt's oldest pyramid at risk and a British company has been called in to stop its collapse

Quote:
A British engineering firm have won a lucrative contract to help save the oldest pyramid in Egypt.
The 4,600-year-old pyramid of Djoser almost collapsed in 1992 after being hit by an earthquake.
But in a bid to preserve the ancient structure, a firm from South Wales has been called in to keep the pyramid standing.

Rescue operation: A Welsh engineering firm has been called in to save the Pyramid of Djoser in Egypt
A team from Cintec in Newport has been contracted by the High Council of Egyptian Antiques to rescue the landmark, which is also known as the Step Pyramid.
The firm worked on Windsor Castle after the fire of 1992 and was also called upon by the Indian government to strengthen a major Delhi bridge ahead of last year's Commonwealth Games.

Landmark: The 200ft pyramid was built in around 2650BC
And after building a reputation for preserving landmark structures, Cintec has won an £1.8million contract to save the Pyramid of Djoser.
The engineers will use self-inflating water-filled bags to bolster against the collapse of a damaged ceiling inside the pyramid.
Stainless steel structural reinforcement anchors will also be implement in a bid to secure the strength of the building's central chamber.
Peter James, managing director of Cintec, said: 'We are extremely pleased to have been appointed for this project and are always looking for new methods to support and maintain historical landmarks across the globe.
'We recognise the importance of both historical and religious structures to their cultures and hope to continue to develop advanced reinforcement systems that will preserve archeological structures for future generations.
'The Step Pyramid project is of particular importance to us as the entire structure could be destroyed at any point due to the damage on the ceiling and roof caused by the earthquake.
'We aim to work as efficiently as possible on this project without comprising the design or strength of the structure.'
Built in around 2650BC as a burial place for Pharoah Djoser, the Step Pyramid can be found in Saqqara, around 19 miles south of Cairo.

Egypt renovates its oldest pyramid
Egypt is doing some housekeeping at its oldest pyramid - replacing stones and cleaning the Djoser Step Pyramid in an effort to restore the site.

The restoration works will not damage or endanger the monument, Supreme Council of Antiquities head Mostafa Amin said following a field tour Tuesday at the pyramid in Saqqara.

Renovation works are being completed according to a plan laid out to protect the pyramid, according to Amin. Workers have finished cleaning the sand and blemishes accumulated over time from its six steps to remove the added weight from the pyramid.

The restoration includes replacing worn-out stone bricks with new pieces made of the same materials, as well as replacing unstable stones to prevent their collapse. Holes and gaps on top of the six steps have also been filled.

The more than 4600-year-old pyramid was the first built by ancient Egyptians and was constructed from limestone for Pharoah Djoser, who ruled from 2686 to 2613 BC.

Six unequal steps form the pyramid, which is 62m high. Inside, the pyramid hosts a network of corridors and a granite and marble burial chamber.

Saqqara pyramid in danger as restorations halt over financial woes
Renovations at Egypt’s oldest pyramid in Saqqara have halted because the Antiquities Ministry has not paid the company implementing the restoration.

Experts have warned that parts of the ancient structure could collapse. The Revolutionary Youth Union has also threatened to file a complaint against the antiquities minister and to submit a memo to UNESCO asking for its intervention.

Antiquities Minister Mohamed Ibrahim Ali, speaking to Al-Masry Al-Youm, denied the pyramid was in any danger, and added that renovations are continuing. He said the ministry failed to pay the company restoring the pyramid for its work due to heavy debts.

Ibrahim said UNESCO had months ago sent an expert to follow up on the restorations. Al-Masry Al-Youm said the minister intends to hold a press conference to address more details about the renovation project.

Sabry Farag, the ministry’s chief inspector in Saqqara, said financial constraints were behind renovation delays. He said the director of the renovation company was behind what he characterized as “rumors” alleging that the pyramid is facing collapse.

But Omar al-Hadary, head of the Revolution Youth Union’s tourism committee, accused the minister of circumventing the problem by insisting that the pyramid remains safe.

“If the minister is so confident of his claim, he should give technical reports as evidence,” he told Al-Masry Al-Youm. “We will soon respond to the minister’s allegation, especially since some parts of the pyramid are indeed facing collapse.”

The pyramid, which is more than 4,600 years old, was first built by the ancient Egyptians and was constructed from limestone for Pharaoh Joser, who ruled from 2686–2613 BC.

Six unequal steps form the pyramid, which is 62 meters high. Inside, the pyramid has a network of corridors and a granite and marble burial chamber.
