Thailand will use 10-digit mobile telephone system on September 1

Thailand will change from 9-digit to 10-digit mobile telephone system on September 1.

Setthaporn Khusripithak (เศรษฐพร คูศรีพิทักษ์), a member of the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) said the change, approved by the telecom regulator yesterday, was in response to the rapid expansion of the use of mobile telephones.

With the 10-digit system, the country will have enough mobile telephone numbers for the next 30 years, Mr. Setthaporn said.

Beginning September 1, users of all mobile telephone systems will have to dial the prefix 08, he said. For examples, the number 01-123-4567 will be changed to 08-112-345-67 and the new number of 09-123-4567 will be 08-912-345-67.

only the mobile number i guess for now. because there should be enough number for fixed line...and didn't we just change the system recently 4-5 years ago but actually a few other countries have changed to 8-digits system for a while though

Phone numbers

True helps make the switch

True Move announced yesterday that it is ready to help mobile-phone customers make the switch to 10-digit numbers.

True Move customers, as well as customers from other networks, are invited to visit True Move Shops, True Shops and authorised True Move dealers throughout the country to have their contact lists updated. True Corp's general manager for marketing management, Suphakit Vuntanadit, said True Move was the only operator offering free downloads of mobile phone update software for the Symbian, Palm, Pocket PC and Smart Phone platforms through its website or via WAP, starting on September 1.

what i really dont understand that they no just apply this rule to new numbers only and leave the old ones as they are. Like this, many people from overseas wont realize the change and don't get connected. anybody has an reasonable explenation why they did that ?

Is the change transparent to customers?

Because I am using 12Call and I am in Singapore, whereas my teerak, uses True Move, is in Colorado now. We definitely will not be in Thailand for the next 1 or 2 mths. Any advise?

I guess it's about the technical problem.
It may not be practical to have 2 systems at the same time.

No, it is not automatically changed, we have to either edit all of our phone numbers that we saved in our cellphones by putting "8" in between or go to customer service shop and they can help us done it.
