Transalpina Ski Resort, Lotru Valley, Oltenia

Transalpina Ski Resort, Lotru Valley, Oltenia

This resort was long time called Vidra, but after its modernization in 2012 was rebaptized Transalpina, which is confusing, as Transalpina Road doesn't pass through it but 7 km away.

The main track descedens from 2000 m elevation to 1235 m and is 6 km long.

Cacica / Kaczyka, Bukovina

Cacica / Kaczyka, Bukovina

The most Polish village in Romania - in 2002 were 1017 Romanians, 227 Poles, 115 Ukrainians, 42 Germans. In 1930 there were 703 Poles, 657 Romanians, 344 Ruthenians (Ukrainians), 88 Germans, 40 Jews, 26 Russians, 6 Hungarians etc.

In 1792 20 families from Bochnia (a town in Southern Poland) were berought for work in the salt mine (salt was discovered here in 1785). In 1810 there were 305 inhabitants, mostly Polish.

The salt mine preserves 200 years old salified wooden staircases. The Polish Catholic church built in 1904 is one of the four basilica minor in Romania.

In fifth photo is the building that covers the shaft of the salt mine.

Bucharest - Manuc Inn

Bucharest - Manuc Inn

Built in 1808, when Bucharest was still an Oriental looking city, as result of the Phanariots' regime (Greek rulers imposed by Ottomans) since early 18th century.

Toward the middle of 19th century, Wallachia and Moldavia will rapidly westernize their lifestyle, architecture and culture so at the end of 19th century nothing Oriental remained, except some old buildings.

Easter Vigil at Dintr-un Lemn Monastery, Oltenia

Easter Vigil at Dintr-un Lemn Monastery, Oltenia

The name "Dintr-un Lemn" means "made from the wood of a single tree" and refers to the legend of the old church of the monastery, built from the wood of one oak tree.

In 1640 was built near this church the present stone monastery, with a beautiful church and fortified complex of cells.

Mocearu salt karst lake and Chiliile village, Buzău Mountains, Muntenia

Mocearu salt karst lake and Chiliile village, Buzău Mountains, Muntenia

Mocearu Lake formed some hundreds of years ago when an underground salt bed got washed away by water. It is interesting that although situated on salty terrain - the Meledic Salt Plateau, the lake has fresh water.

Chiliile, the village and commune on whose territory the lake is, is situated on the valley of Sărățel River ("Salty Little River"), a tributary of Buzău River. The village is remote, hard reachable and archaic.

Capidava, Roman - Byzantine fort on Danube, Dobruja

Capidava, Roman - Byzantine fort on Danube, Dobruja

Initially, it was a Dacian tribal capital on the right bank of the Danube. After the Roman conquest, it became a civil and military center in the province of Moesia Inferior (later Scythia Minor), modern Dobruja.

It seems that the fort at Capidava was only a chain in a system comprising many others including the fortifications at Carsium (Hârșova), Cius, Troesmis, Noviodunum (Isaccea), Aegyssus (Tulcea). The fort was also provided with a port facility, including a wharf below the water, and storage and other annexes on the upper terrace, as well as with an edifice of thermae.

Brad, the capital of Land of Zarand

Brad, the capital of Land of Zarand

Land Zarand is situated in the western sector of Metaliferi Mountains (where Brad is) and eastern part of Zarand Mountains. Is an area at the tripoint of three historical provinces: Transylvania, Banat and Crișana, Land of Zarand extending on all of them. Is one of the culturally - richest and most archaic etnographic zones of Romania, although very little studied and promoted. The people from here are called Motzi, like the ones from upper Arieș Valley.

Apuseni (the common name for Western Carpathians) cover some 20,000 km˛ and are distinct in Romania by that human settlements are present at all elevations, as villages, hamlets or isolated farms, in a harmonious cohabitation with nature. This is more pregnant in Metaliferi Mountains (~ 2400 km˛, the largest range in Apuseni), where are found the gold ores and mining centers that since Roman antiquity attracted a cosmopolitan population of workers from various part of Europe (and even Asia during Roman times).

Brad (population 14,495), the economic capital of the Land of Zarand, was since Roman ages one of the three main centers of gold mining in Apuseni, together with Roșia Montană and Zlatna. The gold from here can be found in artefacts discovered in Egyptian pyramids, at Rome, in Austria-Hungary or Russia and an 180 m long complex mining galleries from 2-3rd centuries CE, the so-called "Treptele romane" (the Roman Stairs) is preserved in a component village (Ruda - Brad) and the only Museum of Gold in Europe can be visited in town. During Roman times, the route of gold from Roșia Montană to Italy was also passing through Brad.

Brad is also famous for the local Mocănița, part of a larger and more spectacular network of industrial railways that presently is mostly out of use. The narrow gauge railway was opened in 1907 for coal transportation and the sector presently in use, the one between Brad and Crișcior was converted few years ago into a touristic train that passes through extraordinary picturesque landscapes and time forgotten villages.
