right now even SWD's looks like sewage last i heard CM saying some 8000Cr needs to remodel whole of Bengaluru SWD

City’s dedicated power plant to be ready by May 2018

The setting up of a dedicated power plant for Bengaluru city will begin with the laying of the foundation stone for the Karnataka Power Corporation Ltd.’s (KPCL) 370 MW gas-based power project in Yelahanka on June 21. The project is expected to be completed by May 2018.

While the city is the State’s largest consumer of power, planners say that a dedicated plant is crucial for meeting its constantly increasing demand for electricity. A dedicated plant will also reduce the city’s dependence on hydel plants, where power generation oscillates due to monsoons, and other major thermal plants in the region.

The Rs. 1,570-crore project, which is coming up on 25 acres of land on the premises of the KPCL’s erstwhile diesel-based power generation plant, is scheduled to be completed by May 2018, according to a senior official of the KPCL, who is supervising the project.

Contrary to plans of using the plant as a mere backup generator, it is now proposed to be used as either base-load or peak-load station, depending upon the power requirement of the city.

Pointing out that the city’s power consumption level, which has seen a huge increase from 1,500 MW a few years ago to 2,500 MW now, is poised to grow further with the lining up of various infrastructure development plans, including the extension of metro rail, power sector officials feel that such a plant is the need of the hour to improve power supply.

Gas-based power plants do not pollute as much as thermal power plants.. They are in a way the cleanest when compared with other non-renewable methods..

The one in Bidadi i think was for Toyota.. The plan was to supply the gas to industries and let them generate their own power.. The pipelines are pretty much laid in all important zones now.. They should make everyone using big DGs switch to gas.. big tech parks and industries to start with..

Does anyone know how KIAL meets its power requirements? I have seen something that looks like a power generator west to the terminal.. and it doesnt pollute much... In fact i have never seen any kind of black smoke coming out of it.. or is it not a power generator at all?

When Power is consumed by Bengaluru why should we pollute other towns to feed our requirements like we do with our water/trash etc :)

Let it be in Bengaluru, there are other ways to reduce pollution, if there is a case where they keep dumping all the bad to other cities they will never get attention like the Mandur incident - would take 24 years to clean it.

^^ we should distribute source of pollution, good for all.. power plant should be started where there is less pollution. peak pollution should be avoided as it is bad for health. bangalore vehicle pollution cant be reduced, so we can move out power plants at least. we should see what is better for the whole state, bangalore pays lot of taxes to spend in rest of the state.

Yelahanka gas power project may be expanded

Foundation laid for the first unit of 370 MW capacity on Tuesday

After laying the foundation on Tuesday for the State’s first-ever gas-based power plant with a capacity of 370 MW in Yelahanka to cater exclusively to the needs of Bengaluru, the State government is considering expanding the project by setting up a second unit.

“We are thinking of a second unit, but the focus will be on quick completion of the first unit,” Energy Minister D. K. Shivakumar told reporters on the sidelines of the event.

The Rs. 1,571-crore gas-based power plant is being built on the premises of the now-defunct diesel-based power generation plant.

Water for Yelahanka tank

The power plant will utilise nine million litres a day of treated sewage water from around the region and release five million litres to the nearby Yelahanka tank, according to KPCL officials. The premises will be turned into a lung space for the neighbourhood by planting saplings on 33 acres, they added.

Centre says Bengaluru power outages could be a thing of past
This, only if Karnataka government provides power line support, says Power Minister Piyush Goyal
Union Power Minister Piyush Goyal has blamed the reluctance of the Karnataka government in providing right of way for power lines for the electricity crisis that has seen constant blackouts in Bengaluru.

India’s tech hub has seen massive blackouts during summer due to a combination of shortage of power generation in its thermal and hydel power plants and lack of adequate planning in sourcing power from other states.

“I have been concerned about the Bengaluru problem that largely emanated because of three very important intra and inter state transmission lines, because of which we have not been able to move power seamlessly into Bengaluru,” said Goyal, who is the minister of state with independent charge for power, coal, new and renewable energy and mines.

The Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd’s plan to build a 400 KV line to Yelahanka was delayed since 2011 due to a roadblock at one location
. Once completed the project can ensure 500 to 600 MW power flow into Bengaluru.

The second project is the 400 KV Dharmapuri - Sumanahalli power transmission line by which power will flow from North to South has been held up due to lack of 'right of way' in 15 locations in Bengaluru urban area. The third project is 400 KV transmission between Madhugiri- Yelahanka that requires 46 locations to be given right of way for the project to be completed. This line will help power to flow from Kolar to Madhugiri and add reliability of power supply to Bengaluru. The fourth transmission line of 765 KV between Madhugiri to Dharmapuri, which was supposed to be completed in December 2014 has been delayed due to right of way in 15 locations.

“While the country is power surplus, Karnataka is suffering a shortage. If these issues are resolved, it will add to the reliability of the Bengaluru power supply significantly. The state had a problem of generation of hydro power due to shortage of water. But with the onset of monsoon, hydro power generation has started once again. There was also a breakdown in the Sharavati project. But the project is back on track two months ago, “ he added.

He said that if the state government gives us all the right of way approval within the next 30 days, then a deadline on when the projects will be completed will be given by the central government.

The power power plants of Karnataka have 51 days coal stock in their plant as compared to two to three days stock two years ago. “ I want to reassure that coal shall never be a problem for the power plants of Karnataka,” Goyal said.
at least they should make it public like this so that people will know..

If things continue this way, I see the power scenario in Karnataka being very different in the next 5 years. Solar power with the help of CG is getting a big boost. 2000 MW in Pavagada in the next 2 years (with 50% share for Bescom), Other solar projects in some major taluks across the state, I dunno if the rooftop plant will be a hit esp since they reduced the buyback price and capped the installation capacity.
Gas based power plant in Yelahanka will also be really helpful for Bangalore. And if they add more as proposed, Bangalore's power problems will be a thing of the past.

Other things that could help are cutting down transmission losses, and savings made by using LED bulbs.
I am not a fan of DKShi, but had been to Kanakpura recently, and the place has changed a lot. LED street lights and much cleaner roads than before.

bangalore got too many potholes, worst roads in recent history.. but still no problem we will support congress... it was when bjp came to power it found out 11.30pm deadline was there in some corner fine print of law, and enforced it in around 2008... earlier there was no deadline enforced at all and pubs used to be open till 3am.. when congress came it was made 1am only on fridays and saturdays, and now 1am on all days.. we can now peacefully celebrate birthdays after 12pm

while bjp continues to ban cow slaughter, beef sale, porn websites, etc etc in rest of the country

Talgo tilting train to reduce commuting time between Bengaluru, Mysuru

Travel time between Bengaluru and Mysuru could be reduced to 90 minutes in the near future if trials with a high speed, tilting train manufactured by Spanish manufacturer Talgo conducted between Delhi and Mumbai in the next few days are successful.

Union Minister Suresh Prabhu on Saturday said that larger orders for the trains will be placed based upon the success of the trial run, which will likely begin from August 1. The train recently clocked 180 kmph this week between Mathura and Palwal during a trial run. “This technology will be cheaper as it can run on existing tracks. Since there are a lot of curves on the Bengaluru-Mysuru line, it will be better. We will start in a short time,” Mr. Prabhu said.

The state government had proposed the use of these trains on the route to reduce the travel time without having to create new infrastructure. Track doubling and electrification work on the line is almost completed. A major hurdle of shifting Tipu Sultan’s armoury taken up by US based company Wolfe Private Limited will also be completed soon. “In all probability, the project will be completed by year-end and tilting train coaches will be an added attraction on the track,” said R.V. Deshpande, Major Industries Minister, who also has the infrastructure portfolio.

Tilting train coaches are product of Talgo-the Spanish manufacturer of intercity, standard, and high speed trains. These coaches are light in weight and designed in a way that it can run on curves without decelerating. The Indian Railway recently conducted the first trial run in the stretch between Bareilly and Moradabad, as part of strategy to increase the speed of the trains, the minister explained.
Great for pairing up as twins (big and small) :)

Bengaluru- Mysuru formidable force
