Agreed. It reminds me of Townsville, actually - and a bit of Mount Isa. Also had shades of places like Darwin and Suva.

Is Port Moresby really as dangerous as people say? I'd like to go there - but I do like to get out and about, and really explore places properly, and from what I hear Port Moresby is a bit too dangerous to do that. I also hear PNG is very homophobic, which turns me off somewhat too.

PNG is still a tribal country like Soth Sudan or Afghanistan, the goverment is weak, so it's rlly dangerous both in Port Moresby and countryside

Hmmm... as much as I'd like to go, this is overwhelmingly the feedback. I think I'll give it a miss until/unless the situation changes.

there seems to be a spike in modern buildings and developments recently though? there's a modern shopping centre in the pics... that must have changed the city quite a bit over the past 5 years. interested in seeing more pics when people get the chance.

I lived in Port Moresby before I lived in Brisbane, and I think it's just a question of knowing how things are.

There are large international communities, Malay Chinese, Filipinos, Australians, African communities etc, so obviously people from all over the world not only find their way there, but manage to establish themselves.

When we lived in Mosby, our strategy was basically not to go looking for trouble. We didn't exactly stay hidden in a gated community, we would go to the local markets, we could go to some of the bustling non affluent shopping centres etc and things would be fine. But we wouldn't go around the city like untouchables, you always have to be street smart.

And we wouldn't take unnecessary risks as if we worked for Vice or National Geographic. We wouldn't venture into the hillside communities which have high poverty, just to sight-see.

Basically we would be where we needed to be. Which isn't to say that PNG can't be a lot of fun, but it's always best to be organized. Papua New Guinea is popularly known as 'The land of the unexpected'. If you want to go to the Yacht club, or go Scuba Diving or whatever then do that, but have a good idea of what it is you are doing. Develop an understanding of your suburb.

For the most part we saw about as much danger as we have in Brisbane! So if you have you wits about, it is hardly Afghanistan or South Sudan. That is scaremongering.

PNG has one of the highest concentrations of jaw dropping tourist spots in the world! It is just not marketed. The reality is, if it was actually developed it would blow many of the famous tourist spots out of the water!

There is more to see in PNG than you have time for! As far as natural tourist potential goes, I would put PNG in the top 20 globally!

Active Volcanos, Hot Springs, Mighty Waterfalls, spectacular Mountain Ranges, Beautiful Reefs, Beaches, Rapids, and one of the densest Rainforests in the world just to name a few. It is one of the world's best kept secrets!
