You must be coming for the Dark MOFO event, Cul?

Anyway, enjoy Hobart and we have a few building sites on the go at the moment and hopefully by June another one or two may have started up.

Have a great trip.

Hot off the press - Marriott to open Hotel in Hobart

Quote:
Marriott hotel at Parliament Square with $50 million luxury accommodations
SIMEON THOMAS-WILSON, Urban Affairs Reporter, Mercury
an hour ago
THE world’s largest hotel company, Marriott, is expanding into Hobart with a $50 million luxury hotel behind Parliament House.

As part of the Parliament Square project, the hotel chain will open a yet to be named 128 room hotel on Murray and Davey Streets.

MORE: PARLIAMENT SQUARE DEVELOPMENT MARKS MAJOR MILESTONE

Falling under Marriott’s Luxury Collection, the hotel will be the first under that banner to open in Australia and Marriott International’s area vice president Sean Hunt said it would be based on Tasmania’s heritage.

“We have been following this project [the Parliament Square redevelopment] with great interest and we are delighted to be here, this is our entry into Tasmania,” he said.

“Hobart is now the third strongest [visitor] market in Australia.”

Marriott International has 6000 hotels around the world, with more than 100 as part of it’s Luxury Collection and Tasmanian Premier Will Hodgman said it was a massive endorsement for the state that they were willing to invest in Tasmania.

“We are delighted that they want to be a part of this historic development at Parliament Square,” he said.

“It will bring one of the world’s best hotel brands to Tasmania.

“This is a sign of the times that Marriott Group want to be a part of Tasmania’s visitor economy.”

The development will create 150 jobs and once the hotel is constructed it will have 90 ongoing jobs.

October next year has been slated for the completion date.

Found another small image of the proposed Brooker Highway Pedestrian Bridge.

Has to be open by April 2018 to coincide with an Anzac Day event, so I am guessing tenders will be called soon and construction underway by the middle of the year.

Looks good...

Although Ali has run into trouble with his Montpelior Retreat development, no such problems with his mini project at 51 Sandy Bay Road - which is tucked in behind the historic Gatton Side Bed and Breakfast place.

A largish excavator is currently on site knocking down the existing 1950s brick building to make way for construction of this to begin. And I have been told that lucky old Ali has come very close to already selling every apartment off the plan.. nice little density filler too.

Work now underway on the 51 Sandy Bay Road development. Basic cut out done and the house will be demolished soon if that process has not already started.

There is a development at 408 Main Road, Glenorchy, which has been taking ages to complete. Anyway, I finally looked up what it is - it's a DHHS Integrated Health Care centre. Nothing particularly exciting, but I found this autocorrect fail in the planning docs (if it's not too blurry - see last sentence in the text):

DA is in for signage at MAC 01.

This naming is ridiculous:
MAC 01 is the name of the building/site owned by VOS Construction.
MACq01 is the name of the hotel, which takes up 80-90% of the building, being leased from VOS to Federal Hotels.

Ali Sultan has applied for a boundary adjustment in relation to the site he owns in Bathurst Street which is a small car park which abuts the old Commonwealth Bank Building.

Might be nothing at all but then again it might be the stirrings for another of his big projects later down the track. Apart from the stalled Montpelior development and the small scale (at least for him) 51 Sandy bay Road block of flats, he is rather quiet at the moment.

Seems the old Bunnings in Rosny will be a Super Cheap Auto. Rumours of Dan Murphys on the eastern shore quashed for the time being!
