17 companies have submitted bids for the consultancy contract for the BD50m first phase expansion of the airport, said Capt Al Gaoud. The Tender Board will soon appoint a consultant, he added. " Work on the expansion project will start early next year, for completion in 2008. "The project will include eight new airbridges, 10 aircraft stands, travelators and expansion of the baggage reclaim area."

The number of check-in desks will be doubled from 40 to 80 and the immigration counters from eight to 14. Capt Al Gaoud said a new lighting system would also be installed to upgrade the airport to Category II level, allowing aircraft to land at a visibility of 300 metres.

Another project is the resurfacing of the existing runway at a cost of BD11m. A boundary fencing will be built at a cost of BD2.7m. Plans are also underway to build a cargo oasis at the airport complex at an estimated cost of BD5m, said Capt Al Gaoud.

The new runway will avoid diversion of aircraft to the nearest airports in the region, in the event of an emergency or maintenance taking place at the existing runway, he noted. Such diversion earlier interrupted schedules and incurred more costs to the airlines and inconvenience to passengers.

The Bahrain International Airport is to be re-designed to handle an annual 12 million passengers by 2015, a top official said yesterday.
Ahmed Nehmat Ali, Assistant Undersecretary for Airport Services, told the opening session of the Airport Development, Expansion and Management Summit Middle East that this was the projected passenger traffic by that time and, keeping it in mind, two consultants had been asked to prepare detailed project reports.
“One of the two reports will be accepted soon and a final consultant will be appointed by the end of this year,” he said. “We are hoping work will start immediately afterwards and the newly-designed facility will be operational by the beginning of 2010.”
He said the two consultants are ADPi from France and Jacob Gibbs from Britain and they had both submitted very comprehensive, although different designs. “These are now being evaluated.”
The Assistant Undersecretary said not only was aviation growing in this part of the world, the national airline, Gulf Air, had also contributed to the growth. “This will only increase as time passes with Abu Dhabi pulling out of it and Gulf Air concentrating on further growth out of Bahrain.”
In addition to that, he said, more modifications were also now on at the airport. “We have spent nearly BD25 million in the last three years on giving the existing facilities a new look, all of which will be integrated into the new design, with more gates and more infrastructure to accommodate the state-of-the-art large aircraft.”
He said $300 million has already been allocated towards the expansion and refurbishment programme of the passenger terminal building, a full re-surfacing of the main runway, a new perimeter fence, together with state-of-the-art security systems, as well as additional parking bays. “The private sector is also investing in a major infrastructure project creating a new multi-storey car park and a retail complex next to the main terminal building.”
Abdullah Ahmed Mohammed, acting director of engineering and maintenance at the airport, said the physical expansion of the airport would also take place soon. “A piece of 10 square km of land has been reserved for this expansion and it will involve making the existing roads go under the runway.”
He said over six million people travelled through the Bahrain airport in 2005 and they are expecting seven million to pass through by the end of 2006.
