Coimbatore Airport

Airport with a Mission

Quote:
Coimbatore Airport is an accomplished airport of the city of Coimbatore and is located in the Peelamedu region of the city. In the earlier years it was known as the Peelamedu or Coimbatore Civil Aerodrome and is at a distance of 13 Miles (21 kilometers) from the city center. The airport had its commencement in the 1940’s in the form of a civil aerodrome with just a few airplanes of the Indian Airlines. From that period for a considerable phase the air services were restricted to the cities of Chennai and Mumbai. However, in the later years services to Cochin and Bangalore were also added. The airport in the 80s had a thorough transformation when it was closed down for runway expansion so as to enable modern days jets like Boeing 737 and Airbus to operate. The year 1987 is a landmark in the history of this airport since on that year the project of runway exansion was completed and a new terminal started operation.

Nowadays, the airport is served by 10 airlines and 5 more are likely to inititate their operations in the coming years. In the meanwhile, two reputed international airlines SilkAir and SriLankan Airlines started operations to Coimbatore, linking Coimbatore with Singapore and Colombo. The other two international airlines that are operating from here are Air Arabia and Air India-Express. In the airport there is also a runway that is 10,000 feet in length and it is destined that the final expansion will expand it to12,500 ft in length. This will be done to handle wide bodied aircrafts in a better manner.

There are two hangers in the airport. While one of them provides housing for the planes of Coimbatore Flying Club, the others provides shelter for private carriers. The airport has only one terminal and the other is under construction.

The airport is on the verge of expansion and projects are being chalked out in this direction. The airort authority is pondering over the construction of a parallel taxiway to reduce the runway occupancy time and turnaround of aircraft. In addition, plans for modernizing the present terminal with all modern facilities are sought after.

Googling for info on the new terminal doesn't yield any info. This article states that the airport terminal will be just expanded and modernized.

No. Only one. Three terminals for CBE is not required now, may be in future if land is available. Even for indv domestic and international terminals there are lot of issues in land availability.

The extended one is for international and existing terminal will be modified to the new model which will serve as domestic. It looks like the new terminal will have two levels (depature and arrival) as of now both are in ground floor.

Coimbatore Airport to get more facilities by Pongal

The Coimbatore Airport.

Coimbatore: More facilities including a parallel taxiway and additional parking aprons will become operational at the Coimbatore Airport by mid-January, coinciding with Pongal. Modern arrival and departure halls and aerobridges are likely to be ready by June.

According to informed sources, the completed works and ongoing works slated for completion before the start of the World Classical Tamil Conference in June 2010 were reviewed over the last two days by Airports Authority of India Regional Executive Director K. Devaraj and Airport Director M.R. Vasudeva.

The construction of a 1,772-metre-long and 23-m-wide parallel taxiway with a 7.5 m shoulder on either side have been completed.

The parallel taxiway will enable faster handling of landing and take-off. Aircraft meant for departure could be despatched one after the other from the parallel taxiway.

Earlier, the airport had only five parking bays, including one isolation bay for aircraft perceived to have security issues.

Trial operations

The number of bays is now eight. All these works have been carried out at an outlay of Rs. 36 crore. The facilities are ready and trial operations are likely by Pongal.

Plans are afoot to give a facelift to the terminal building: work is expected to begin shortly.

Aesthetically designed arrival and departure halls with two aerobridges costing Rs. 58 crore are to come up, and the work is expected to start soon.

The State government is likely to take up the approach road work also soon, the sources said.

Commissioned the parallel taxiway, three new aprons and three fire tenders

TOWARDS BETTERMENT: Chairman of Airports of Authority of India V.P. Agarwal flagging off a flight on the newly-constructed parallel taxi way at the Coimbatore Airport on Thursday. —
Coimbatore: As part of the modernisation of airports, Airports Authority of India (AAI) Chairman V.P. Agarwal on Thursday commissioned the parallel taxiway, three new aprons and three fire tenders, each costing Rs. 3.35 crore, at the Coimbatore Airport.

Mr. Agarwal said the terminal building was being expanded from the capacity to handle 300 passengers to 750 and soon the airport would be made international as sought by the State Government. The present capacity of 10,000-feet runway and terminal building would be adequate for demarcation with separate terminals for domestic and international operations. These facilities would become operational by June when the World Classical Tamil Conference would be held in Coimbatore. The parallel taxiway would help reduce the runway occupation time of aircraft. Similarly, the additional apron has made available three new parking bays taking the total number to eight from five in addition to an isolation bay for aircraft with security perception.

The three new Austria-made Rosenbauer fire tenders have 10,500-litre capacity and can release water up to 90 m.

Mr. Agarwal recalled the revival of Salem Airport and added that Thoothukudi modernisation was on the cards, while Tiruchirapalli has been completed and work was being expedited at Madurai airport. Once the State Government made 590 acres under acquisition process available, AAI would commence the runway expansion to 12,000 ft and another terminal building shifting the entire set up to the other side with demarcations for domestic and international operations. The work would take three years period, he said. Regional Executive Director of Southern Region of AAI, D. Devaraj, Executive Director (Eng) of AAI, G.K. Chaukiyal, General Manager (Eng), AAI-Southern Region, H.S. Suresh and Airport Director, M.R.Vasudeva took part.
