Inselbergs of Nigeria

A monadnock (pronounced /məˈnædnɒk/) or inselberg is an isolated rock hill, knob, ridge, or small mountain that rises abruptly from a gently sloping or virtually level surrounding plain The mountains in the Mandara mountains for example would not be considered Inselbergs. In southern and southern-central Africa, a similar formation of granite is known as a kopje, a Dutch word from which the Afrikaans word koppie was derived. It is usually a granitic rock.

My home town Ondo in Ondo State is completely surrounded by these inselbergs, if you stand at certain vantage points and you look in every direction you will see them and the town is right in the middle of them, I never thought of them as a unique phenomenon, the next time I visit I will certainly take pictures, this certainly brings back very fond memories

They are mostly found in Northern & South Western Nigeria. There are hardly any in the East.

Although I did see a complex of hills in Enugu that might be Inselbergs.

Inselbergs are usually Granitic, Basaltic etc and they cannot be considered Inselberg if they are not emerging from low lying areas.

Some of the Inselbergs in Nigeria such as Waje Rock & Zuma Rock should be marketed as tourist destinations they are Worldclass inselbergs.

Anyway enough rambling...here is a Panorama from Jeff Attaway - Abuja
