Egypt Air adds six B787-9 Dreamliners to lease

Boeing and AerCap announced at the 2017 Dubai Airshow that EGYPTAIR will lease six Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners.

EGYPTAIR, the national flag of Egypt, is leasing the airplanes from Dublin-based AerCap, the world’s largest 787 customer with more than 115 787s owned or on order.

“The 787 Dreamliner has built a reputation for reliability, operational efficiency and passenger comfort,” said Safwat Musallam, Chairman and CEO, EGYPTAIR Holding Company. “We look forward to the 787 becoming an integral part of EGYPTAIR’s fleet as we progress our modernization and network expansion plans.”

EGYPTAIR’s selection of the Dreamliner builds on its long-term partnership with Boeing, which dates back to 1966 with the airline’s order for three 707s. Today, the carrier’s fleet includes a mix of Boeing 777s and 737s.

“We are pleased that EGYPTAIR has chosen the Boeing 787 Dreamliner to power their growth and fleet modernization,” said Ihssane Mounir, senior vice president of Global Sales & Market, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “EGYPTAIR joins the growing 787 family, now with nearly 70 customers from around the world who will benefit from the airplane’s market-leading efficiency, reliability and comfort.”

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is the fastest-selling twin-aisle airplane in history. Boeing has delivered more than 600 787s entering service in 2011, flying more than 200 million people on more than 610 unique routes, saving over 19 billion pounds of fuel.

“AerCap is extremely proud to have been selected by EGYPTAIR to support their widebody fleet renewal program,” said AerCap CEO Aengus Kelly. “Our customers around the world have benefitted tremendously from the airplane’s efficiency, reliability and comfort. We’re confident the addition of these 787-9 aircraft will enhance EGYPTAIR’s fleet for many years to come.”

EGYPTAIR operates passenger and freight services to more than 75 destinations in the Middle East, Europe, Africa, Asia and the USA.

AerCap is a global leader in aircraft leasing and aviation finance with nearly 1,100 owned and managed aircraft.

Boeing reported 8 cancellations for the 787 in their weekly order update.

http://www.boeing.com/commercial/#/orders-deliveries

This is most likely the order by ALAFCO for 8 787-8s, which was pretty much dead for a long time already. Now they placed a new order for the 737 MAX they must have decided to finally cancel it. In retrospect they must have some regrets that they never tried to lease out these frames. They must have passed on getting many delivery slots until deciding to delay the order indefinitely, which was already done several years ago. The Egypt Air deal with AerCap is just of one of the many lease deals for the 787 deal. ALAFCO (from Kuwait) could have easily placed these 787s with one of the many airlines in the region operating the 787. But as customers cannot keep delaying deliveries forever their original deal must have expired, needing new price negotiations with Boeing if they still wanted to take delivery and place them with customers. As the price level of a 787 now is much higher then the price level in 2007 when ALAFCO placed their order it might have been easier to get a good deal on getting extra MAX.

And yes I'm aware that if it turns out that the cancellation wasn't ALAFCO it will mean that this whole post would be nonsense.

Well, it was proven correct wasn't it?

Or will you now state that more 787s for Emirates is also untrue?

The only nonsense was your statement saying no decision was made when it every clearly was made.

So you only just registered to say I was wrong? You know how sad that looks.

And I wasn't even wrong, I still stand firmly behind my remarks about the nonsense which the fake analyst Saj Ahmad of StrategicAero Research is making up on his blog. And I still find it scary that major media don't do enough research to see that his banter is nothing more then the views of people posting their opinions on forums like Skyscrapercity and Airliners.net. Well at least he's consistent, which is also the reason why some times he is lucky that one of his predictions actually comes out.

And will they order more 787s in the future? Woohoo, what an intelligent analyses is that.... It's very likely they will, but for Saj Ahmad he really has to say that as pretty much every time he said that Emirates would order the 787 he talked about a much larger number then the current 40. And there hasn't been any official confirmation in the press releases that they have 60 options. Which are pretty much worth nothing right now anyway. If they want to place more orders for delivery in the late 2020s they simply go to Boeing who will give them a good deal with or without options.

What's also interesting are his views of the A380 in Emirates fleet. If it has no future why is it then that Emirates is demanding an absolute certainty that Airbus will still be producing in 2027? But let's not go further into that here, it's the 787 thread after all.

They haven't ordered any. If they are getting any 787-8s they will get them from Hainan Airlines. I wouldn't be surprised if Hainan goes all 787-9 and place their 787-8s at other airlines within their group like Suparna.
