Harahan boardwalk now extends nearly halfway across the Mississippi

Quote:
At the western end, the boardwalk will connect to a spiral concrete ramp that will have viewing and rest areas, as well as space for entertainment events. The ramp, in turn, will link up with a series of trails, including a 73-mile route along the main-stem levee leading all the way to Marianna, Arkansas. Special gates are being installed along the levee to allow cyclists while still restraining cattle that graze in the area.

Developers of the high-profile One Beale project have put a hotel tower on hold and are focusing instead on plans for an office building that could house six to eight companies.

Carlisle Corp. vice president Chance Carlisle provided an update Monday on the project, saying in an interview that plans are firm for the earlier proposed 30-story apartment tower while the office building's size is still undetermined.

One Beale originally was to include a pair of iconic riverfront high rises housing a luxury hotel and upscale apartments atop a parking garage placed primarily underground, giving the project a commanding presence on the city skyline.

The high cost of that idea led developers late last year to consider spreading out expenses by adding a third high rise for offices. Under the plan Carlisle outlined Monday, designers would shelve the 22-story hotel, put a bigger but less costly garage on a nearby parking lot and hone in on what could turn out to be a six-story office building. It would be the first opened Downtown in about a decade.

Plans for the $100-million-plus project at the foot of Beale Street unfolded as ServiceMaster Global Holdings separately launched a search for a new headquarters campus. Carlisle declined to comment about ServiceMaster and One Beale. The home services company is considering relocating from East Memphis, where it employs about 2,200 workers in four buildings covering about 360,000 square feet, and perhaps moving to another state.

Ballet Memphis unveils final design for new Midtown headquarters

Quote:
Ballet Memphis on Thursday unveiled the final designs for a see-through headquarters built to beckon Overton Square passersby to stop and watch the dancers move.

Newly released architectural renderings show plazas and courtyards that open to the sidewalks.

Transparent walls of perforated copper and glass are clear invitations: The public is welcome.

"The whole purpose of being on the corner is to draw in and connect with the community and be able to put art on display,'' said LeeAnne Cox, a longtime board member who chairs the project.

Construction is about to start on the northeast corner of Madison and Cooper and should be completed in 2017.

Sleepy Memphis? $8.8 billion in projects suggests not

Quote:
A new, interactive map of the Memphis area pinpoints $8.8 billion worth of construction involving 196 commercial, educational, medical or civic projects, many involving the renovation of older buildings.

"Two things surprised me,'' said real estate executive Larry Jensen, the force behind the mapping project called 901renews.com. "The number of projects and the total dollar volume. Those are big numbers.''

A third revelation was the large amount of construction that involves renovation of the city's older structures. "It's really a focus on renaissance rather than building something brand new,'' he said.

Any new updates on Memphis developments? I haven't been to the city since I spent half a year in 2015 back down there before moving north of the border.

This seems like an important airport newsclip:

https://choose901.com/air-canada-returns-memphis/

Memphis non-stop service to Toronto is resuming thanks to Air Canada this May 2017. This is probably the single most important service addition in the past few years, not because of Toronto specifically, but Toronto Pearson airport is the second most international airport in North America behind JFK. When Air Canada resumes this service, Memphis will have only one layover to get to virtually anywhere in the world. With just one layover in Toronto, now Memphians will be able to go to Abu Dhabi, Delhi, Islamabad, Sydney, Sao Paulo, virtually anywhere in Europe, and a host of long-haul international flights it didn't have before.

I don't think Memphis has a New York JFK flight at present, so this has hurt business connections. The only service to NY is LaGuardia, which is not really an international airport much at all. Los Angeles is currently the most international connection Memphis has (Delta runs one flight I day I think), but its a long 4 1/2 hour flight, Toronto is a quick hour and a half connection. It truly makes Memphis connected to the world again with just one quick layover.

Development Services Group has submitted a $73 million development plan for the Edge

Quote:
A new plan submitted to city officials would breathe new life into the former Wonder Bread factory that used to fill the Memphis Medical District with the smell of fresh bread before it closed in 2013.

A group of investors spearheaded by Chisca Hotel Developers – Development Services Group – has submitted a $73 million plan to create 286 upscale multifamily units, a 480-space parking garage and 150,000 square feet of office and retail space.

“The 2013 closure of the old Wonder Bread Bakery, which once employed 250 people, dealt a heavy blow to the remaining neighborhood establishments, DSG vice president of development Ethan Knight said in a letter of intent. “However, the Edge is a key location to continue the success of urban development that Memphis has enjoyed over the past 30 years.”
