"Tianjin Eye" Ferris Wheel, Yongle Bridge, Tianjin
2008.10.21
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Tianjin location ![]() The Tianjin Eye, a gigantic ferris wheel constructed on Yongle Bridge over the Haihe River, allows visitors a spectacular view of more than 120 meters above the ground. Construction was completed early this year. After the successful completion of the body, they tested the ferris wheel's loading ability by using sandbags, followed by the installation of capsules and the electronic drive. The 110 meter diameter ferris wheel lifts people 120 meters up into the air, as high as one 35-storey building, and promise a grand view of around 40 square kilometers over the surrounding city. It is reported to be the only ferris wheel in the world that's erected above a bridge. There are 48 capsules on the ferris wheel, each of them carrying up to 8 people at a time. It takes half an hour for this slow-rotating observation wheel to complete a full circle. |

Urumqi, Xinjiang
2008.10.23
![]() ![]() View from Red Hill Park ![]() Xinjiang ![]() Urumqi (乌鲁木齐) is the capital of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and the most 'inland' city in the world. With a population of two million gaily-dressed ethnic inhabitants, the city is likened to a piece of emerald embedded at the foot of the Tianshan Mountains. It lies in the lofty ice-capped Bogda Peak and vast Salt Lake in the east; in the rolling pine-covered Southern hill, a well-known scenic district, in the south; and in the alternating fields and sand dunes of Zunggar Basin in the northwest. The temperature in Urumqi widely ranges between day and night as it belongs to the semi-arid continental climate of middle temperate zone. The climate is extremely arid due to long period of sunlight and bare precipitation. It has shorter spring and autumn; and longer winter and summer. May to October is the golden season for traveling to Urumqi, when flowers are in full bloom and the fruits, like melons, are ripe with its fragrance. The largest city in the western half of the People's Republic of China, Ürümqi has won a place in the Guinness Book of Records as the most remote city from any sea in the world at a distance of about 1,400 miles (2500 km) from the nearest coastline (Ürümqi being the city closest to the Eurasian Pole of Inaccessibility). |

Landscape near Jiantang Town, Shangri-La County (Zhongdian), Yunnan
2008.10.24
![]() Yunnan ![]() Shangri-La County (香格里拉县) is a primarily Tibetan county in northwestern Yunnan Province in southwest China and the capital of Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. The county was formerly called Zhongdian County (中甸县) but was renamed after the fictional land of Shangri-La in the James Hilton novel Lost Horizon in 2001 in an effort to promote tourism in the area. "Shangri-La" or "Zhongdian" may also refer to Jiantang Town (建塘镇), the capital of the county. Located at point where Tibet, Sichuan and Yunnan all meet, Shangri-La County is administered by Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. In the past, Shangri-La was called Zhongdian or "Jiantang" in Tibetan. At an average altitude of more than 3,000 meters (about 9,843 feet), Shangri-La is very difficult to reach. Without railways leading there, the chief means of transportation is motor vehicles. To get there, tourists will typically begin their journey in Kunming, traveling first to Lijiang and then taking the long-distance bus in Lijiang to Shangri-La. It's about 175 kilometers (108.74 miles) from Lijiang to Shangri-La. |

Six Harmonies Pagoda (Liuhe Pagoda), Hangzhou, Zhejiang
2008.10.25
![]() View of Hangzhou from Liuhe Pagoda across the West Lake ![]() Zhejiang ![]() The Six Harmonies Pagoda is located on Yuelun Hill overlooking the Qiantang River, and south of West Lake (Xi Hu) and is one of the true masterpieces of ancient Chinese architectures. Originally the pagoda was built during the Northern Song Dynasty (386-581) by the ruler of the Wuyue State, a part of which became Zhejiang Province. The name 'Liuhe' comes from the six Buddhist ordinances and it is said that the reason for building this pagoda is to calm the tidal waters of the Qiantang River, and as a navigational aid. However, the pagoda was completely destroyed during a battle in the year 1121. The current pagoda was constructed of wood and brick during the Southern Song Dynasty (420-589), and subsequently, during the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing Dynasties (1644 -1911), additional exterior eaves were added to the pagoda. It is octagonal in shape and some 59.89 meters (196 feet) in height, it also has the appearance of being a thirteen-story structure, though it only has seven interior stories. There is a spiral staircase leading to the top floor and upon each of the seven ceilings are carved and painted figures including animals, flowers, birds and characters. Each story of the pagoda consists of four elements, the exterior walls, a zigzagged corridor, the interior walls and a small chamber. Viewed from outside, the pagoda appears to be layered-bright on the upper surface and dark underneath. That is a harmonious alternation of light and shade. Upon ascending the pagoda, there is a spectacular view of the Qiantang River Bridge spanning the surging tides of the Qiantang River. Near by the Six Harmonies Pagoda an exhibition center detailing ancient pagodas in China was set up in recently upon Yuelun Hill. So visitors can visit the Six Harmonies Pagoda and then learn of the various ancient pagodas architectural styles to be found within China. |

Nine-Dragon (Jiulong) Waterfall, Huangshan, Anhui
2008.10.26
![]() ![]() The observation deck ![]() ![]() ![]() Anhui ![]() Of all the notable mountains in China, Mount Huangshan, to be found in the south of Anhui province, is probably the most famous. Originally known as Mt. Yishan it was renamed Mt. Huangshan in 747 AD in recognition of the legendary Huang Di, who was the reputed ancestor of the Chinese people and who made magic pills for immortality here. The Jiulong Waterfall is situated between the Luohan Peak (Arhat Peak) and the Xianglu Peak (Incense Burner Peak) hanging down from cliffs thousands of meters high. It has nine cascades, each forming a pool underneath, and is therefore known as Nine-Dragon Waterfall. After heavy rain, the rushing waterfall looks like nine white dragons, flying down from the sky. |

Wangfujing Catholic Church, Dongcheng District, Beijing
2008.10.27
![]() ![]() ![]() Beijing location in China ![]() Wangfujing Catholic Church, known as the Eastern Church, is located on famous Wangfujing Avenue in Beijing. It was first established in 1655. Originally an apartment for two foreign priests during Emperor Shunzhi's reign in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), the priests subsequently built a small church on the open ground. Later several earthquakes and wars gradually destroyed the church. It was rebuilt in 1904. After the 1980 restoration in 1980, the church reopened. Because of its geographic location, the Eastern Church faces west. It follows the Romanesque style of architecture, with strong pilasters and one high and two low vaults displaying a grandiose architectural style. |

Male Stone (Yangyuan Stone), Danxiashan Geopark, Guangdong
2008.10.31
![]() ![]() Guangdong ![]() Danxia Mountain (丹霞山) is a famous scenic area near Shaoguan city in the north part of Guangdong. The Danxia mountain is formed from a reddish sandstone which has been eroded over time into a series of mountains surrounded by curvaceous cliffs and many unusual rock formations. It is described in local signage as a "world famous Unesco geopark of China". There are a number of temples located on the mountains and many scenic walks can be undertaken. There is also a river winding through the mountains on which boat trips can be taken to enjoy the scenery. Particularly famous are two particular formations: a stone pillar called the Yangyuan ("male/father stone") is said to bear a remarkable resemblance to a phallus. The Yinyuan hole is a cleft which (especially to people who visited the Yangyuan pillar before) somewhat resembles a vagina. and this is the Female Stone:

TianXingQiao Waterfall, Tianxingqiao Scenic Area, Guizhou
2008.11.02
![]() ![]() ![]() Guizhou ![]() This waterfall is located in the Tianxingqiao Scenic Resort, six kilometers away from the famous Huang Guo Shu Waterfall (posted on this thread on March 11th) near Anshun. Tianxingqiao consists of three adjoining scenic areas: Tianxingpeng area, Tianxingdong area, and the Stone Forest area above water. The most distinguished character of the scenic resort is its abundance in water, rocks, forests and caves, which compose a picturesque view for the visitors. The TianXingQiao Scenic Site comlements the HuangGuoShu Waterfall. Where the rainy season ceases, the water flow in HuangGuoShu waterfall decreases, making it less magnificent than its most glamourous days. However, it is precisely this period where the TianXingQiao Scenic Site becomes more accessible, and the land starts to show out of the water. |

Tianya Haijiao, Sanya, Hainan
2008.11.03
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Hainan ![]() Tianya Haijiao, a romantic and beautiful scenic spot, lies to the west of Sanya City, Hainan Province. It receives many visitors from home and abroad every year since its open in 1988. It also attracts thousands of young lovers from every corner of the world to hold their wedding ceremonies there. Tianya Haijiao means 'the furthermost part of the sky and the sea' in Chinese, suggesting an unattainable place. In the past, Chinese people believed that the sky was square and the earth was round. Therefore there was definitely a furthermost part of the sky and the earth. Hainan Province, the southernmost part of China, was believed to be the location of Tianya Haijiao. The Tianya Haijiao Scenic Spot sits on Maling Mountain facing the sea. Walking along the seashore, people can see a stone carved with four characters Nan Tian Yi Zhu, which means 'a pillar standing in the southern part of the sky' in Chinese. The story goes that when the local fishermen's daily life was affected by terrible storms, and they could hardly catch the fish, two kind-hearted fairy maidens transformed themselves into two large stones and stood on the beach to shelter the fishermen. From that time fishermen were safe from storms whenever they went to sea. But the maiden's master, the Mother Goddess of Heaven, was so furious that she dispatched the Thunder God to drag them back to Heaven. The two maidens refused, so the Thunder God broke them in two. One of them was thrown into the sea and the other one was left here. Near the remaining one lies another stone carved with the Chinese characters Hai Pan Nan Tian, which means 'the sea and the sky joined together'. It is the oldest stone inscription to be found there. |
