Indian thermal power developer to commence operations at 5MW solar farm

http://solar.energy-business-review....ar-farm-220313

State-owned Indian power developer National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) will commence operations at the 5MW solar power plant in Dadri, Uttar Pradesh.

The photovoltaic facility was developed with an investment of INR485.9m ($8.93m) and will have an annual production capacity of 7.26MWh power per annum.

NTPC had selected Wipro as the construction and equipment provider for the facility that can reduce 0.82 metric tonnes of carbon emissions per megawatt-hour of power produced, reported The Times of India.

NTPC-Dadri general manager DK Sood told the newspaper that the project is the first non-conventional energy projects undertaken by the thermal power developer.

"The power plant is at present under trial. Commercial supply of electricity will begin before the end of March," added Sood.

Electricity produced at the facility will be procured by power purchasing company GRIDCO as per its power procurement agreement with NTPC.

The company, aside from the Dadri facility is also involved in the development of other solar farm in different parts of the country including two more in the state of Uttar Pradesh.

NTPC announces to set up solar plants in Singrauli, Unchahar

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/c...w/19207958.cms

LUCKNOW: The National Thermal Power Corporation on Monday announced setting up of two solar power plants of 25 Mw and 10 Mw capacity in Singrauli and Unchahar respectively. The central power generation utility is already in the process of establishing an 8 Mw power plant in Singrauli.

Speaking to reporters, regional executive director, NTPC, Sharad Anand said that the northern region of NTPC is working on (660x2=1320 Mw) Bilhaur Super Thermal Power Project, 40 kilometres from Kanpur. Likewise in Tanda, the stage-II (660X2 = 1320 Mw) extension work is also in under process.

Anand informed that work in 1320 Mw Meja thermal power station, which is a joint venture with UP government, is in full swing. The project happens to be a 50:50 joint venture with UP government. "Another 1320 Mw is also proposed. This plant is 40 km far from Allahabad," Anand said. The NTPC has a total installed capacity 40,674 Mw. This includes 16 coal-based and seven gas-based power plant of 35,310 Mw capacity.

He said that NTPC is running various corporate social responsibility schemes for the project affected persons. This include providing drinking water, health care facility, hygiene care facilities, various free health camps, like eye-camps, family planning camps, TB awareness camps, etc. Anand added that the utility is also carrying out education awareness programme.

New ambulance service for better maternal care

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/c...w/19486659.cms

LUCKNOW: With the aim of reducing maternal mortality ratio (MMR) in Uttar Pradesh, the health and family welfare department is working to launch a dedicated ambulance service. Though the name of the service has not been finalised yet, the ambulance network will comprise 1000 vehicles equipped to handle pregnancy related emergencies, including assisted child birth.

The move appears reasonable considering that more than 53% or 1.84 lakh cases attended to the 108 service were related to pregnancy. The staff helped 1,856 women deliver babies in the ambulance and assisted 1,938 women to deliver babies on the spot

He also claimed that maternal health scenario in the state has changed considerably. Citing figures, he said, institutional delivery has increased by 200% in past eight years. In 2005-06, the rate of institutional delivery stood at 20.6%, which increased to 62.1% by 2009 end. And, things will turn out to be better when the new government bulletins on maternal health will come out.

Kanpur upstages Chennai, emerges country's top leather exporter

LUCKNOW: It's the first time in four decades that Kanpur has upstaged Chennai to take the number one position for exporting leather and its goods in the country.

According to the Federation of Indian Export Organisation (FIEO), the apex body for Indian export promotion, Kanpur has put up a consistent show in the last seven years. FIEO officials congratulated the leather exporters of Kanpur on their achievement and termed it as a remarkable success story.

No other city has excelled and grown like Kanpur did. The growth rate is three times more than the national average. What China did on the global scene, Kanpur did in India," said FIEO chairman, Rafeeque Ahmed. He visited Kanpur to participate in the board meeting of council for leather exports (CLE) where he said that Kanpur alone accounts for 40% of the total leather exports.

"The share of southern cities, with Chennai as their nerve-centre, shrank from 65% to 38% in last five years. In the last fiscal, Kanpur had created history exporting goods worth Rs 4,500 crore," said he.According to FIEO officials, it was Kanpur's ability to successfully convince people from West about the utility of buffalo leather, which, till recently, was rated third class.

"The leather that goes into the world market from Kanpur is unbeatable because of the finish and durability," said Ahmed. Throwing light on the city leather's contribution in upholstery section, he said, "No other city is exporting leather for upholstery from India. The leather exported from here is really of a very high quality."

Of the 350-odd tanneries in Kanpur, 200 of them are using state- of-the-art machines imported from Italy, Germany and Japan. This enables the industries to produce high quality products meeting international standards and quality.

Though Kanpur attained the top position for exporting leather, FIEO officials rued that it is also the leather industry here which is contributing to the high pollution levels of river Ganga. "There has been lack in sincerity in adhering to environment norms. The industry needs to address this issue and invest to ensure zero discharge in the river. This would then help in conservation of the river," said Ahmed.

Land row stalls UP’s lone waterway

http://www.indianexpress.com/news/la...erway/1107152/

The state's lone inland waterway project from Varanasi to Allahabad on the Ganga is stuck because of resistance to land acquisition for construction of an approach road to the proposed Varanasi port.

Last week, officials of the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), including Assistant Director Surendra Singh, had to flee in the face of angry locals when they went to demarcate land for the construction of the approach road.

"We are working under constant threat. During the past three years I have been threatened eight times. This time, the people said they would kill me and throw me in the Ganga. I cannot take it any more and have informed IWAI headquarters," said Singh, adding that he was even getting threat calls.

For the past three years, IWAI officials have been working on the project — a 300-km-long stretch from Varanasi to Allahabad. In the first phase, the port at Varanasi was to be developed followed by the Allahabad port. Land has been acquired for the port near Vishwa Sundari bridge in Varanasi and down the Yamuna Bridge in Allahabad. At Allahabad, a boundary wall has been constructed and the approach road has also been cleared.

But the project got stuck due to unavailability of an approach road for Varanasi port. "We have acquired the land in both the locations. But an approach road is a must for Varanasi. Without the road, it is not possible to go ahead, even our Allahabad location is lying idle," said Singh.

Samsung to start manufacturing of Galaxy S4 in Noida , India soon

NEW DELHI-Samsung India today said it will soon start manufacturing its flagship high-end smartphone Galaxy S4 in India.

"We are planning to start manufacturing of S4 soon at our Noida , Uttar Pradesh facility," Samsung Mobile and Digital Imaging Country Head Vineet told reporters.

He, however, refused to share any time frame by when the production will start. The Noida facility is manufacturing about 35-40 million phones annually, including 12 smartphones such as Galaxy S3.

The company currently imports the recently launched Galaxy S4 from South Korea.

Sensing huge demand for Galaxy S4, the company is also looking to double up the high-end smartphone (above Rs 20,000) market size in India, which is currently contributing around 10-12 per cent of the overall smartphone market.

The Galaxy S4, which is packed with newer imaging features as well as 'gesture-control' technology, has a five-inch full HD super AMOLED touchscreen, 13 mega pixel rear and 2 mega pixel front camera and supports 3G networks.

Although Samsung is the market leader in smartphone market in India, competition from Apple, BlackBerry and Nokia has put pressure on it to add new software features to maintain its lead.

According to research firm IDC, the overall mobile phone market in India reached about 218 million units in 2012, growing 16 per cent year-on-year.

http://www.jagran.com/uttar-pradesh/...-10346383.html

Develop industrial parks along the expressways as in interior from past experience not many companies would be interested to invest.

http://www.jagran.com/uttar-pradesh/...-10375742.html

Govt’s solar power plan finds few takers

http://www.indianexpress.com/news/go...kers/1116887/0

A month on, invitation for investment in 200 MW attracts bids for 140 MW.
Almost a month after inviting private investments in solar power generation of 200 MW in the state, the UP government has attracted bids for only 140 MW.

The poor financial record of Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Ltd and higher rates offered in Gujarat acted as two major deterrents for the bidders, it was learnt.

The fact came out as the state government opened technical bids for purchase of 200 MW power generation but realised that nine firms showed interest in only 140 MW. Left with no other option, the state has decided to move ahead with the tender for 140 MW only, which is likely to decrease further if one or more companies do not qualify in evaluation on technical criteria.

The government came out with a solar power policy earlier this year and on the basis of the policy, a tender for solar power purchase of 200 MW was floated last month.

Investors were also offered special incentives in Bundelkhand region. The companies were to bid rates at which they would sell power generated to the state for the next 12 years after start of generation.

Sources said the companies openly shared that their concern over the financial vulnerability of Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Ltd, which is under huge debts. At the same time, they expressed interest in investing in the state if it followed the Gujarat model of power purchase, where the government has fixed power purchase price and signs agreement with companies who are ready to sell on these rates. Gujarat is offering Rs 15 per kwh for purchase of solar power for first 12 years after commencement of the plant.

"Considering the present scenario, it might not be the best response but it is a sufficient response. The Gujarat model cannot be feasible for the state. Even other states like Punjab, Tamil Nadu are following the tender process and they are facing similar problems," said a senior official.

In January 2011, the then Mayawati government signed a memorandum of understanding and power purchase agreement with the company for establishing 1,320 MW thermal power plant in Ghazipur district. It is one of the nine projects for which state government had relaxed the deadline for starting the work but the process is yet to start.

The companies that have shown interest include bids for 5 MW each by Navkan Mine and Mineral Pvt Ltd, New Delhi, and Jyoti Buildtech Pvt Ltd, Lucknow; 10 MW each by Jakson Power Pvt Ltd, Noida; DK Infra Power Pvt Ltd, Delhi; Refex Energy Pvt Ltd, Noida; Azure Pvt Ltd, New Delhi, 20 MW each by Shri Colonizers and Developers Pvt Ltd, Lucknow, and Moserbaer Clean Energy, New Delhi. Excel Infra Pvt Ltd is the only company that has bid for 50 MW.

The state government has decided on May 30 as the date for opening financial bids.

Mulayam’s lion safari gets green nod

http://www.indianexpress.com/news/mu...-nod/1117398/0

Etawah project: A year ago, MoEF had stopped all work following alleged Forest Act violations
A month after Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav himself wrote a letter requesting speedy approval for Mulayam's dream project of setting up a Lion Safari in Fisher Forest at Etawah, the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) has given permission to start construction for the project.

On July 1 last year, taking note of alleged violation of provisions of the Forest Conservation Act 1980, the MoEF had asked the state to immediately stop all work and submit an action taken report within 15 days.

Now, the MoEF, in its letter dated May 3, has informed state Principal Secretary (Forests) to take action in the matter in accordance with the Master Plan/Management Plan for lion safari approved by the Central Zoo Authority (CZA). The CZA on its part approved the Master Plan on February 25.

The MoEF has, however, remained silent about the large number of trees of prosposis juliflora (vilayti babool) felled in 2012 by state's forest department without approval.

While CM Akhilesh Yadav wrote to MoEF on April 3, 2013, Chief Conservator of Forests Rupak De wrote a letter on March 5, 2013 in which he mentioned that provisions of Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980 do not apply in present case, as all activities regarding establishment of lion breeding centre and lion safari have been done in consonance with the directions of CZA.

In response to these letters, B K Singh, Director, MoEF gave the permission to start work at the proposed lion safari.

Following the clearance, state's forest department had stepped up construction work at the proposed lion safari. Minister of State for Zoo Shiv Pratap Yadav will inspect the ongoing work on Saturday. "We have started the construction work though on a small scale," De confirmed.

Mulayam had first mooted the proposal for setting up Lion Safari in 2005 when he was chief minister. A total of 150.83 hectares of forest land in Fisher Forest was to be used for the project. The state government had then approached the MoEF with a plea that the project will help in tourism activity and generate income for the local people. However, MoEF turned it down with the directions that the proposal could be considered only after the consent of the CZA. The consent never came and the Samajwadi Party lost power in the 2007 assembly elections and the BSP government showed no interest in the project.

Akhilesh, after assuming charge on March 15, 2012, revived the project.

He allocated a sum of Rs 5 crore in 2012-13 and another Rs 20 crore in 2013-14. UP Housing Board has been appointed as the construction agency. Two pairs of lions, too , have reached the state and will be later kept in lion safari.
