Goes to show any post and any thread on here is only relative to one life...and that life is relevant to any other...on here. I lament that too many posts claim right of passage as they are here. Melbourne is, was, will be wonderful...ahhh even after I am gone : ( I have told my grandchildren to watch what happens and remember their Pop saw the first skyscraper in Melbourne. I want to see the entire story but no one gets to see that...: (

Demolition well under way on this site. I couldn't find an original image of Urbanest's 312 La Trobe Street student accom development (next to the Argus Tower), so borrowed one of Mark Baljak's on UrbanMelbourne. Check his out, as they are much clearer, and in colour.

Oh dear ...
Long-vacant city 'scab' set for facelift May 9, 2013 Be the first to comment Read later Adrian LoweReporter, theage.com.au ![]() The Savoy Tavern...labelled a 'scab on the city'. It has been described by the lord mayor as a "scab" on the city, but the scab might be about to heal. The owner of the long-derelict Savoy Tavern, on the corner of Bourke and Spencer streets in the CBD, has for the first time publicly revealed plans for the site's redevelopment. Mark Rowsthorn, the former head of rail freight and ports company Asciano, bought the site in 2005 for $9.9 million, with some reports suggesting that the boarded-up tavern could now be worth up to $20 million. 'It's in a good spot, a convenient spot for the weary traveller coming off the train.' Photo: John Woudstra The Savoy has been shut for almost 18 years and its derelict state has aggravated city leaders, particularly because of its proximity to Southern Cross Station. Advertisement Mr Rowsthorn has said he will return the Savoy to its original state. "It will be pretty simple, in keeping with the way it was," he told The Australian Financial Review. "It's in a good spot, a convenient spot for the weary traveller coming off the train." Lord mayor Robert Doyle last year told Fairfax Media that he had previously offered to have the council pay for the tavern's demolition and have a park created in its place, but the offer was rejected. Mr Rowsthorn said he recently spoke with Cr Doyle and recalled the Savoy's halcyon days as "Victoria's biggest-selling beer pub". "It's embedded in the [memory] of the old drinkers," he told the Financial Review. "Now the kids can come and see what it was like drinking in an old-school pub." Plans are yet to be officially lodged with Melbourne City Council, but that move is expected to be imminent and he tipped the refurbishment could take just weeks after permits and licences were obtained. Mr Rowsthorn said he hoped the council would share his vision for the site, which would also include a cafe. Read more: http://www.theage.com.au/business/pr...#ixzz2SkKJgd51 It's great to see that someone is finally trying bring back the glory days of Melbourne in the 1970's. They government should introduce a special exemption to allow smoking in this pub so we can fully appreciate the heritage values of the building.

This guy is actually an urban troll. Where are heavy handed compulsory acquisition powers when you need them?
I can't tell if he's joking. People in Melbourne are so spoilt for choice they wouldn't give a shit about a tired 80's pub.

Surely he can't be serious! Sounds like he simply wants to avoid the increased rates that Doyle has threatened owners of dormant bomb-sites with.
If he is serious, it will have to go down as the most blatant 'polishing a turd' exercise in this city's history... |

Why doesn't Doyle and Co buy him out or the state government. My dream for this site is a 5 star hotel catering to business travellers. Perfect location for one.

By the sounds of it he wants to make a quick buck off the 'weary travellers'/ eg the dodgy shit that rolls of regional trains who can be spotted having a beer at 8pm or 8am. You've only got to consider the astoundingly shit demographic the clogs every pub around Sydney's Central Station to see that this is a terrible idea. Hope Doyle has a hand in knocking the liquor licence back.

As a stop gap measure its fine but yes, the need to build something else there should certainly a priority.

what a smarmy fucker this guy is…he could have been using it as a soup kitchen…he could be employing some people with disabilities and still make $$$... could have let Doyle turn it into a park for kids to play in with no cost/restrictions to the site...to think that he has already doubled his investment too…
