Notable sights, photoworthy places etc. in Wien

I am, as some of you might have noticed in my other thread, going to Wien (and Budapest) next weekend, and I have been trying to compile a list of places that I want to see (rather - photograph). Basically I have written down names of places I have seen in photos from Flickr, and also from Bahnsteig's comprehensive Wien threads here on SSC.

I have bolded some queries I have about these places;

Hundertwasserhaus (3rd, Kegelgasse 34-38 / Löwengasse 41-43 - tram? station?)
MuMoK (7th, U2 Museumsquartier)
Michaelerplatz - (Café) Griensteidl (U3 Herrengasse)
Schloss Schönbrunn (13th ´, U4 Schönbrunn)
Gasometer (11th, U3 Gasometer) <- good vantagepoints?
Uniqa Tower (U1/U4 Schwedenplatz) <- observation deck?
Wienerberg Skyscraper District (10th, U6 Philadelphiabrücke + shuttle bus)
Belvedere Palace (U1 Taubstummengasse?)
Karlskirche (U1/U2/U4 Karlsplatz)
Mariahilfer Straße (6th/7th, U3 Zieglergasse)
Fillgrader Stiege (6th) <- How to get here? Exact loction?
Wienzeilenhäuser von Otto Wagner (Wienzeile 40, Wienzeile 38, Köstlergasse 3, U4 Kettenbrückengasse)
Ulrichsplatz (7th, U2/3 Volkstheater)
Jodok-Fink-Platz (8th, Piaristengasse/Maria-Treu-Gasse, U2 Rathaus)
Votivkirche (9th, U2 Schottentor)
St Stephan's Cathedral (U1/3 Stephansplatz)
Graben (Street) (1st, U1/3 Stephansplatz)

I would highly appreciate of anyone could just skim through the list, and perhaps give an opinion on what places really are worth visiting, which ones are not, and perhaps add some must-sees of your own?

I also wonder which districts are the best if you're planning on just walking around and taking random photos?

Are there any great observation decks in or around the central parts of the city that one "must" visit?

Thanks a bunch. I'm really looking forward to visiting your spectacular city.

In my opinion, all those places are worth it.
The parks are very nice too, for example Volksgarten.
From there, you can head towards Heldenplatz (a must see I think), turn on the left and you will get to Michaelerplatz and later to the Graben & St Stephens Cathedral.
You can step up the cathedral, but its not a very good observation deck. Maybe you can try to step up at Steffl (mall) at Kärntnerstraße 19 ("Skybar").
You should also see the city hall (Rathaus - next to the university, it's on the ring) and the state opera.
Feel free to ask if you have questions.

Fillgraderstiege: hard to describe, I can give you the way if you really want to see it.

I suggest you more places to visit,

- Prater (Riesenrad) 2nd district, reachable by U1 Praterstern
- Donau City 22nd district, reachable by U1 Kaisermuehlen (for people who likes highrises)

and you can reach the Belvedere Palace by trainstation (S-Bahn) Suedbahnhof or tram 18, O; bus 13A... and also by U1 Suedtiroler Platz then you have to interchange with the busline 13A towards Suedbahnhof.

The Fillgraderstiege should be between hidden the Mariahilferstr. and Wienzeile.. Once i took a walk there i randomly found it, don't ask me how and where =)

Thanks a lot for the advice so far guys! I really appreciate it.

By the way, is there an observation deck in the Millennium Tower?

I know there's one in the Donauturm, but I'm afraid it might be located too far away from downtown for my lenses to be able to capture it conveniently. My maximum focal range is 50mm (on a 1,6x crop camera though) so I'm afraid I might end up with photos too wide from the Donauturm?
The Millennium Tower is located on the "right side" of the river, hence closer to the city.

Any suggestions?

Thanks, stefanguti.

michaelII,
I'm looking to see a balanced mix of both, actually.
Do you have any suggestions for contemporary architecture, other than what I mentioned above?

Vienna DC (U1 Donauinsel/Kaisermühlen)
Wienerberg (as you mentioned above)
maybe MQ (Museumsquartier)

Mein Geheimtipp: Poldistadt (Leopoldstadt, the 2nd district in Vienna on the other side of the Donaukanal/Danube canal). Especially the blocks around Karmeliterplatz (just 100 meters from Schwedenplatz). Why? Not only the cafés and bars there are more cosy and inexpensive, you´l alsol find all sorts of architecture represented there from 19th century neoclassical facades, 1920´s working class council estates to post-war reconstructions and high-rises along the canal.

stefanguti,
All of those places are noted now. I'm really looking forward to walk around in Wien's highrise districts.

Grotlaufen,
Now that's a really great tip - exactly what I'm looking for: an area recommended by a local that's not really in the beaten path. A Flickr search on Karmeliterplatz revealed some nice looking buildings.
Thanks.

Bahnsteig4,
You still alive?

i would also say the z-filiale in Favoritenstraße 118 is worthy to be photographed.

Hah!
There's still some tme to go, so I here I go.:

DO go to Donauturm, you'll like it regardless of your cam. You can also combine it with a stroll through the DonauCity.
Here's some pics that I took with my 18-55mm lens:

Another interesting vista point is Kahlenberg in the north (38A bus line from Heiligenstadt):

If you visit the MuseumsQuartier (and you HAVE to!), have your lunch at Glacis Beisl! Loveliest place in Vienna, imo.

However, there is NO observation deck on Millenium Tower (what a shame...) and Uniqa tower.

Stephansdom has got two decks, but I would recommend taking the elevator up the northern (unfinished) tower. You'll be outside and have a wonderful view towards the east.

From Stefansdom North Tower you have a clear view, though it's not impressively big, because the city expands more towards the south.

From Donauturm pay attention at the weather and the time. Since the tower is in the east of the center, you might have problems with sun back light when you take pictures of the center in the afternoon. Maybe forenoon would be better.

Im in an internetcafe on Kaiserstrasse right now, actually. This is my last night in Wien as I will leave tomorrow to CPH.

I wish I had more time (only been here for two days) in this amazing city. It has really blown my mind. I might come back later this spring actually.

Thanks everyone for your help!
