Its real folks, Ethiopia's economic growth is for real. I am almost about to make all bets on it.

This is a phenomenon that could change the trajectory of many lives including mine.

When GDP per capita is going down with one of the lowest in the world as is, when people still cannot own they live on, when you have tens of thousands of Ethiopians fleeing to Yemen because it's so bad, when you have two major secessionist conflicts ongoing, when you have the Chinese beating out local firms at each and every opportunity, when 22% of the population needs food aid, you cannot say our economic growth is "real"!

In other news:

Quote:
The Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) is to construct a 42-storey building for its headquarters in Addis Ababa. The building will be the tallest building ever in Ethiopia.

Speaking at a ceremony organized to award architects, who presented designs for future headquarters of the CBE, bank’s president Bekalu Zeleke said the design is expected to represent CBE’s status as world class bank and portray its strength.

The future headquarters envisaged to bring together the scattered head office organs of the CBE will also be the first building in Africa to attain a green building status that meets international standards.

CBE had acquired 10528 sq. meters of land for construction of the headquarters adjacent to Ethiopia Hotel.

Mayor of Addis Ababa City Administration, Kuma Demekssa said the city requires modern buildings that go along with its booming growth. Kuma said massive construction is being undertaken in the city. He said his administration would extend all the necessary support for those who are interested to construct international standard buildings. Kuma said the city administration responded urgently to the request of the bank and believes that the building would add grace to the city.

It was disclosed that some 21 contestant architects presented designs for the building. CBE provided 200,000 birr award to the winner design presented by HENN Architecten (Germany) in collaboration with Universal Consultant from Ethiopia.
Well at least you have Ethiopian and European firms here.

That's a great design. AA has evolved greatly in the past 15 years, and it looks set to continue.

GDP per capita has been going up under the EPRDF. For the sake of peace I will say no more.

I can't say its fake. There is a positive economic activity in Ethiopia. That is real for me. There is also the usual problems.

this kind of take (wrapped in unsubstantiated facts) on one's own country's current state is a bit disturbing to me. sure, things haven't changed much for the overwhelming majority of citizens, but to deny the progress that's been made so far reeks of pure arrogance and is completely unproductive for all parties involved. please let's all try to be rational when we discuss such matters so we can move forward in the right direction.

ITA with Mike.

Meles and CO have a lot of faults, but they've also achieved more than the 2 previous governments combined. They've definitely done quite a bit, even if we all wish they'd change a few things.

Love that building! It's been a long time since the CBE has been planning to build it. The land the city admin had given to them was disputed by the current occupants because they said that the government had not given them the opportunity to build on the land themselves first, as per the law.
I believe it was actually battled in court. I remember this debacle back in 2006/2007.

If I'm not mistaken, the land is the space at the intersection between the road that goes Ambassador-Ghion Hotel and the one that goes from the palace to Ethiopia Hotel. Not sure what the name is, but it's where Harambe Hotel is as well.
If you remember Bruk Clinic, it's that section right there. It's also right across the street from where the Red Cross building is coming up.

I'll try to find a map of the area.

Article from Fortune has more details
http://addisfortune.com/CBE%20Select...adquarters.htm

Quote:

Henn's design was chosen because of better functionalities such as ventilation, day lighting and vegetation, the jury said during the award ceremony. Other criteria included security, access to people with physical disabilities and information technology installations.
I especially like the part about access for people with disabilities. That's something that is nonexistent in any new building as of now. Hopefully we will see a new trend in this direction.

More detailed location:

Quote:
CBE has secured a 10,528sqm plot in the Kirkos District, along Ras Desta Damtew Street next to the Ethiopian Hotel from the Addis Abeba City Administration. The plot on which Brook Clinic rests has also been given to CBE following its request for extra land.
More construction:

Quote:
CBE plans to build an additional 17 buildings in Addis Abeba to move its branches from rented facilities to owned ones. The sites CBE targeted are Ayer Tena, St. Joseph Church, Amist Kilo, Lafto, Gotera, Megenagna, Tewodros Square, Africa Avenue (Bole Road), Kirkos, Wello-Sefer, Mexico Square and Lideta. Construction work started for the Megenagna building last Thursday, December 31, 2009.
Unfortunately construction is not set to begin until END of 2011, plus another 5 years of construction. That is way too far in the future, we need to be more efficient!!!

I really like these new green buildings. Like the Bank of America tower in Manhattan

Addis developers also seem to be improving with design; more modern designs.
Another modern design recently for Addis is the Exhibition Center in this thread. Its just a beautiful building through and through:
