Târgoviște and Dealu Monastery

- Chindia Tower, built by Vlad Țepeș in 1460
- the Small Princely Church, ~ 1450
- the Great Princely Church, 1584

Dealu Monastery is situated on a hill from where a wide panorama over Târgoviște and its surroundings can be admired. Dealu is certified in 1431. Present church, early and isolated sample of Western Renaissance style in Wallachia, dates from 1501. The surrounding complex of buildings were mostly rebuilt after the 1940 earthquake.

Ghighiu Monastery near Ploiești, Muntenia

Ghighiu Monastery near Ploiești, Muntenia

At the end of 16th century is mentioned a skete here, that will eventually vanish, the place staying deserted for a long period. In 1817 a new monastery is built on the same place. The initial wooden church of this monastery / skete disappeared, the present church being built in 1858 and painted inside by Tattarescu (the greatest Romanian painter of the time) in 1864.

The cells date from 19-20th centuries. The entire complex has a beautiful architecture, as you can see in video.

Probota Monastery, Suceava County, Moldavia

Probota Monastery, Suceava County, Moldavia

The main foundation and resting place of Petru Rareș (1527-1538, 1541 -1546) and his family. He was the son of Stephen the Great, the most illustrious ruler of Moldavia (and "Greatest Romanian", according to a television program poll) and himself (Rareș) was the greatest ruler of 16th century Moldavia.

The monastery was built betweern 1530 (the church) and 1550 (the fortress). The large and well preserved complex of murals inside dates from the period of construction. On the outside of the walls it mostly vanished.

Lăzarea / Gyergyószárhegy, Székely Land, Transylvania

Lăzarea / Gyergyószárhegy, Székely Land, Transylvania

The most important and attractive feature of the village is the Lázár Castle. The main building, the residence was erected between 1450 - 1532. In the late 16th century Gabriel Bethlen, the future prince of Transylvania, was brought up in the castle and his upstairs room in the gate tower can still be seen unto this day. In 1631, the castle was transformed into a magnificent Renaissance residence, and a large courtyard with towers was added. A particularity is that the crenels of the gate side of the courtyard are decorated with fine Renaissance stuccos and paintings.

The castle is situated on a hill above the village, at the limit of the forests. 200 m from castle is a Franciscan monastery built in 1669, where lived Ion Căianu, Catholic monk and humanist of Romanian origin.

Some places in Caraș - Severin County (Mountainous Banat)

Some places in Caraș - Severin County (Mountainous Banat)

Is the third largest county by surface - 8,514 km˛ and the population is 274,277. The density - 34 / km˛ - is the second lowest in country.

The county is practically an immense wilderness, with low mountains covered in thick forests extending on most of its surface and with the most national parks in Romania: three national parks and a nature park. Here are the largest prehistorical forests from temperate and southern Europe.

In the few human settlements situated at long distances one from other live one of the most diverse population of a county in Romania: Romanians, Roma (2.7%), Croats (1.88%), Germans (1.11%), Serbs (1.82%), Hungarians (1.19%) and Ukrainians (0.94%), with smaller groups of Czechs, Bulgars and other nations. The area was always low inhabited, which determined the Austrian administration to start a program of colonisation with Germans, Czechs, Slovaks and other nations, after 1718 when Banat became part of the empire.

Oravița - Anina Railway - the oldest (1863) and finest in Romania, passing through the prehistorical jungle of Nera Gorges - Beușnița National Park. On 34 km is a 340 m level difference, 14 tunnels and 10 viaducts.

Oravița / Deutsch-Orawitz / Oravicabánya - population 15,564. The locality existed before, but was developed starting with beginning of 18th century, when German colonists have been brought here. Is one of the oldest industrial centers in Europe, together with Reșița and other towns from Banat. After the German element, Romanians from Oltenia and Muntenia have brought and in 1760-1770 Aromanians (Vlachs from Macedonia).

The first theater on the territory of Romania was built and is preserved here, dating from 1817. All the nations in town contributed to its construction, especially the Aromanians.

Last photo: interior of the Catholic church, dating from 1713.
