Africa World Airline to start operations in September

The domestic airline industry will see its 5th member Africa World Airline officially begin its operations on September 21.

The new airline announced in a statement on Monday that it will receive its first aircraft this Friday in preparations towards the commencement of business next month.

According to the founder of the Africa World Airline, Togbe Afede XIV, the launch of the airline’s operations will see its first flight from Accra to Kumasi, Takoradi and Tamale.

The company’s introduction into the rapidly growing domestic airline industry is expected to further deepen the competition and most importantly drive down air fares.

“We have chosen this particular day for our first flight to commemorate the 103rd anniversary of the birth of our first President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, who was born on September 21, 1909 ”, Togbe Afede said.

(WCARN.com, Sept. 23)

Quote:
Ghanaian carrier Africa World Airlines (AWA) successfully made its inaugural flight on Sep. 21, 2012, marking the official operation of the Accra-based carrier. AWA is a joint venture co-funded by Chinese Hainan Airlines, China-Africa Development Fund, Ghana Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), and Ghana Strategic African Securities.

Based at Kotoka International Airport (ACC), AWA is operating two ERJ-145 jets on three domestic routes from Accra to Kumasi, Tamale and Takoradi in the initial stage. The airline will expand its fleet and launch air services to some Western African cities including Abidjan, Abuja, Lagos, Ouagadougou, Monrovia, Freetown and Lome.

It is introduced that the AWA program has started preparation since October, 2010, which is not only the first practical investment of HNA Group in Africa, but also the first aviation investment of a Chinese enterprise in Africa, gaining support from both the Chinese and African governments.
