But belying expectations, this news comes as a complete surprise.

I think people are fed up with the fleecing by the Omni buses and the lack of safety associated in travelling by those buses. That is why there is such an overwhelming response; perhaps!!!
Over fleecing and safety issues are there with railways too..

Success of premium train does not mean that what railways is doing right.

Omni buses are private day time robbers
Railways premium trains are public day time robbers..

the private and public only makes the robbers different and nothing else.

Soon see.. premium general quota in all trains... and we can see premium toll collection in NHAI roads..

====================================================

In last 10-15yrs how railways increased the fares without our knowledge, but still "bleeding"

1. First Tatkal coach - only 72 tickets will be tatkal with tatkal charges
2. Super fast trains - Super fast charges (BG Vaigai is slower than MG Vaigai..)
3. Increased Tatkal coach to 3-4 i.e. more than 300 tickets went to tatkal quota in many trains... i.e.
4. End to End Tatkal booking - Vijaywada-Delhi passenger should pay Trivandrum-Delhi fare in KL express.
5. End to End Tatkal booking was applied to less than 500KM bookings
6. Meanwhile tatkal charges went up
7. Premium tatkal charges

=======================================================

Next!

8. Premium charges in general quota
9. Extra charge for choosing seat/coach
10. Extra charge for selecting emergency window seat
11. Extra charge for selecting lower berth
12. Extra charge for bedsheets/pillow like GR
13. Extra charge for bringing more than 2 luggage per passengers

Hope still IR will not bleed..

2. Bangalore-Sathyamangalam-Mettupalayam

Arul. I am neutral. Neither have I totally supported, nor have totally opposed the premium train scheme. I have my own strong reservations on the hefty price but support it as a concept.

What I was surprised of is that there has been so much patronage for a premium train, that too not on a festival day. That was my point.

When we pay extra price for the seat over the wings in aircrafts (seats with more leg space), nothing wrong in paying extra for the emergency exit seats if at all introduced.

Go in any normal, katta vandi bus. If you carry more than 10 kg, the conductor will make you buy another ticket for the luggage.

When we silently pay for luggage in bus, how do you expect railways not to charge??

It is another matter that our people are renowned for bringing the whole household's things (sometimes they use railways as a truck) and stack them at every possible space inside the bogie.

Given a chance, I would never venture to travel by an overnight Omni bus and would travel by a premium train paying may be Rs. 300 more for a ticket rather than risking my life.

However, I do agree that it is horrible to see en route passengers being charged for end to end in Tatkaal. That has to be done away with. So also the increasing % of Tatkaal seats.

Add Pattukottai - Mannargudi also. Pattukottai - Thanjavur may be ok, however will have only Passenger Potential. Along with these the some of the trains which were runs empty between section could also have their service optimized for better patronage.

Doubling and Electrification shall be prioritized as pointed out.

The bleeding thing is government spends 2 lakh crores for a dream project for just an extra rail from Chennai to Delhi and scraps 160 projects saying feasibility.

Clearly, the government is for rich.

Anthony Anna,

The Tuticorin - Madurai New line via Arupukottai is not in the scrapped projects list. It is very well active and I have confirmed with other rail fans also that the TN - MDU new line is not scrapped. Lets not panic over an imaginary thing.

Chennai to Kanyakumari is not approved, but only Chennai-Cuddalore is the one that got approved.

whatever i can remember, following are the new railway projects that got approved from 2004.
important clause of projects that are likely to be scrapped is negative RoR. so we may need to go through each projects to find which all are the ones that have negative RoR

1. Chennai-Cuddalore (ECR)
2. Erode-Palani
3. Tindivanam-thiruvannamalai via Gingee
4. Tindivanam-Nagari via Ranipet, Walajah Road,
5. Nagapattinam-thiruthuraiPoondi via thirukkuvalai
6. Mannargudi-Pattukkottai
7. Thanjavur-Pattukkottai.
8. Peralam-Karaikkal(restoration of new line)
9. chamarajNagar-Satyamangalam-Mettupalayam
10. Salem-mettur doubling..(profitable one)
11. Attipattu-Puttur new line...
12. Avadi-Sriperumbudur-Guduvanchery(?)
13. Chinna Salem-Kallakurichi...(not sure, it is approved one).
14. Trichy-Erode Electrification(?)
15. Tuticorin-Madurai via Aruppukkottai.(should be a profitable one)

Prabhu to meet MPs on rail reforms
Quote:
In a bid to take MPs on board, railway minister Suresh Prabhu will meet parliamentarians to discuss the progress of rail projects under implementation in their constituencies.

Prabhu, along with minister of state for railways Manoj Sinha, will meet all MPs in seven batches over dinner during the winter session of Parliament. An official in railway board secretariat said Sinha has directed the board to submit the details of ongoing projects and other works across 17 zones. The railways have landed in a financial mess due to the long list of non-remunerative projects.
...
The move is also seen as an attempt to take MPs into confidence before infusing radical reforms which could be politically unpopular.

But ECR projects already scrapped.

The Madurai tuticorin line will be sufficient atleast for 4 or 5 years with doubling of existing lines, instead of new.

Chennai cuddalore already started with land acquisition and official announcement of same.

The only fear now is will it be stopped?
