HERNING | VISTA Herning | 45m | 12fl | Completed

VISTA Herning - Herning, Denmark

vista-herning.dk - The official building website

Introduction:

The VISTA Herning highrise is part of the larger "DGI Parken" which is one of the largest construction projects in the history of Herning. The project was first proposed back in 2005 and construction was finally started in April 2008 after years of planning and negotiantions between the many involved parts. The visual highlight, the residential highrise, was originally proposed as a 20 storey building (70-75 meters) and even highered at one point of the process (~27 floors). In the end they ended up agreeing on 12 floors, after the developer KPC-BYG had feared not to be able to sell all the apartments in a 20+ storey tower. However, they managed to sell most of the apartments in the first few weeks, despite prices and sizes much higher than the normal here in Herning. 13 of the 22 apartments are more than 200 squaremeters with pricetags between 5-6 million Danish Kroner (~670.000-800.000 €).

Beside the highrise, the complex will also consist of:
  • The 9000 sqm "waterculture center", which is inspired by DGI-Byen in Copenhagen and DGI-Huset in Århus.
  • 7 Storey DGI Hotel with around 155 rooms.
  • 4 Storey Mediahouse for Medihuset Herning Folkeblad incl a media café.
  • Healthcare center.
  • Parking garage with 300 parking places.
  • 3000 sqm plaza in front of the building.
Facts:
  • 45 m
  • 12 floors
  • Apartments: 22
  • Water Culture (floor 1-3) / Residential (floor 4-12)
  • Undergorund parking for 300 cars.
  • Estimated price for the entire project: ~500 million Danish Kroner (in 2005)
  • Proposed on August 9, 2005.
  • Approved on December 19, 2006.
  • Construction started on April 9, 2008.
  • Expected opening: October 10, 2010 (10/10/2010)
  • Address: No exact address yet, but (see location here)

The latest good photo I have of the construction site, it's from May 2008. The large area in front is where the parking garage will be, while the complex itself will be behind it. Today it looks quite different, I'll add some new photos soon.

So this is what ended up of the 27-storey proposal? Sad.. Well atleast a highrise is always a highrise, but it could have been so much more.

/\ Yes sad indeed. But atleast I'm glad the project made it through some very hard times with all the planning and negotiation betweent the involved parts. At one point the project was extremly close to being dead, so this is surely better than nothing.

Two highrises under construction at the same time in Herning - congratulations:-) Not many cities in Denmark apart from Copenhagen has that statistic, if any.

Vejle maybe?

But yes it's sad we didn't end up with the 27 storey tower which IMO also is the one that looks the best (from the proposals of course). But better a small highrise than none.

/\ I think only one of "De 5 søstre" is U/C in Vejle (probably soon to be completed).

Went by the construction site today and a lot has happend since the last update. In the back row of buildings, one has been demolished to make room for the hotel. To the right the Mediahouse is now at full height (topping out ceremony was this week) and in front the 3 storey parking garage has now been digged out and filled with concrete elements. All the way in the front they're now making the entrance to the parking garage:

Nice renderings and construction updates. Tower alone looks okey, nothing special really, Queens Corner looks better.

Update

Here's a little update from the construction site. Parking garage is almost finished and will be opende soon. Mediahouse is also soon completed, think they'll start using it in late summer.

They are also well underway with the foundation for the DGI house itself, so also for both hotel and residential highrise which both will be located on top of the DGI building.

Foundation of the DGI house and the highrise:

Closer look at the almost finished mediahouse. Soon this view will be totally blocked:

The "usual" overview from northwest. A new plaza with buss lanes will be made on top of the parking garage within the next month or so:

Finally a pano from the "inner courtyard". Right now they're working on the lower floors, later the 7 storey hotel will be build on top of this and extended in between the 2 buildings to the right:

So who are the idiots responsible for the height being reduced to pathetic 12 floors?

KPC whos building it since they were affraid they couldn't sell all the apartments. turned out they sold like 75 % of them in the first few days though, so maybe it could have been possible to sell more. Anyway, the whole project was in big danger of being cancalled and I'll take a 12 storey over nothing anyday. Overall it's still a pretty big project.

And now to the construction site. Today they added the last parts of the tower crane, so it's time to move upwards. The crane is 75 meters to the top and lifting height is 60 m.

From an hour or so ago:

I also added a bunch of photos to my website about two weeks ago, you can see them HERE, should anyone be interested.

I think the low black/glassy part will end up quite nice, while the highrise and hotel parts will be a bit so so. Not really a big fan of those white concrete elements, atleast they could have done the facade like the mediahouse with the ehhh "puds"..I think that turned out quite okay.

A lot of things going on at the consruction site at the moment. The hotel is now at full height (7 floors) and the highrise is at 8 floors (of 12). You can now also see the first parts of the glass of the lower building, looks pretty nice, and more or less exatcly like on the renderings. They have also started working on the plaza on front, something I have rather high hopes for. In the middle there'll be a buss lane, towards DGI a "granite landscape" with water installations and room for outdoor café serving, and on the opposite site (front of the photo) a "green landscape" with different things for activities like climbing, skating, basketball etc. I'll try to find the a rendering.

Today they also started installing the little "skybridge" between the hotel and the congresscenter on the other side of the street:

EDIT: Two more from the early evening:
