N50 Emmeloord-Zuid

The new Emmeloord-Zuid interchange of N50 opened to traffic late last evening. This marks the completion of the expansion of N50 from Ens to Emmeloord, which started in 2015. It is now a four-lane expressway from the Ramspol Bridge to the Emmeloord motorway interchange with A6.

The new interchange is a partial one, you can only access it to and from Zwolle. It is located directly south of the Emmeloord motorway interchange. The new overpass of the southbound access road also features a bike path, there wasn't a bike connection previously. It's a good photo standpoint.

A16 Rotterdam

The final plans (tracébesluit) for the A16 extension around Rotterdam have been approved. The plans will be published on 25 August. It comes 11 months after the draft plan for the project. They want to begin construction next year.

Keeping up with this thread makes it seem like the Dutch are rebuilding their entire expressway system simultaneously. It's really impressive and I enjoy seeing how those roads are built. I think it would be a lot of fun to take a drive from the border with Belgium to the border with Germany some time.

Is the discipline of Dutch drivers usually good? I've driven on the 401 in Toronto with a similar express and collector setup, and drivers constantly switch multiple lanes at a time. Each lane usually also has a very large difference in speed. It's definitely an experience.

You can do that as fast as 15 minutes on a motorway

It's a fun question though. Which route would you guys recommend for someone who'd like to drive from the Belgian border to the German border and see some of the main motorway sights?

There is so much that you will have to pick a few projects that interest you the most.

If you take the large projects from the past 10 years and the ones that are ongoing, then you can go over the A1, A2, A4, A12, A15 and so on. But combining those in one route is a bit to much.

N50 Zwolle - Emmeloord

I recorded the entire N50 today, detailing the many changes this road underwent over the past 10 - 15 years.

My suggestion is in a year of 3-4 to drive:
A4 Antwerpen - Rotterdam - The Hague - Amsterdam (Delft-Schiedam, Leiderdorp, wide section Burgerveen-Schiphol, and a total of 4 tunnels)
A10-zuid (construction Zuidastunnels)
A2 X Amstel - X Holendrecht
A9 X Holendrecht - X Raasdorp (new alignment Badhoevedorp interchange)
A5 X Raasdorp - X Coenplein (elevated A5)
A8 X Coenplein - X Zaandam (Coentunnel and tidal flow system)
A7 X Zaandam - X Joure (Afsluitdijk, new X Joure)
A6 X Joure - X Emmeloord (alignment through Tjeukemeer)
N50 X Emmeloord - Kampen (doubled expresway)
N307 Kampen - Lelystad (super-two)
A6 Lelystad - Muiderberg (SAA-project)
A1 X Muiderberg - X Diemen (SAA-project and aquaduct Vecht)
A9 X Diemen - X Holendrecht (SAA-project tunnel)
A2 X Holendrecht - X Leenderheide (wide section Amsterdam-Utrecht, 3 express-collector-systems)
A67 X Leenderheide - Zaarderheiken (old, narrow and and congested)
A73 X Zaarderheiken - X Vonderen (tunnels Roermond)
A2 X Vonderen - Maastricht-Zuid (tunnels Maastricht)
A2 Maastricht-Zuid - X Kruisdonk
A79 Maastricht - Heerlen (only hillside parkway in NL)
A76 Heerlen - Germany

The A67 between Eindhoven and Asten will be widened to 2x3 lanes. But actually it should be between Eindhoven and Venlo-Noord. The A67 is way too much congested by trucks taking the left lane and ignoring the forbidden overtaking

recent news

Some recent news;

* the first real construction works for the reconstruction of the Beekbergen motorway interchange (A1/A50 near Apeldoorn) began on Monday. They will construct a new connector for traffic from east to south, to relieve the cloverleaf. They moved the east to north connector road to make space for construction works.

* the first visible construction on the new N18 between Groenlo and Enschede also started on Monday. This is a PPP project. The consortium 'Noaber 18' will build a new 100 km/h expressway, with 2x1 lanes from Groenlo to Haaksbergen, and 2x2 lanes from Haaksbergen to Enschede.

* the final appeals against the expansion of N35 east of Zwolle have been dismissed by court. Construction will start next year, and will be completed in 1 - 1.5 years. It will be a 2x2, 100 km/h expressway with one interchange at Wijthmen.

* the scope of the N33 Zuidbroek - Appingedam expansion study has been enlarged, they also compare a 2+1 (alternating passing lanes) solution, as well as an expansion entirely on a new alignment, instead of upgrading the existing N33. 2x2 lanes still seem to be the preferred solution, the new alternatives are added 'for comparison'.

* over 1,000 comments were made to the draft plan approval procedure of the A27 expansion on the east side of Utrecht. The independent 'environmental commission' found the participation process to be of high quality and extensive. Only minor issues were pointed out.

* the complete renovation of the A22 Velser Tunnel near Haarlem is on schedule. They completely stripped the tunnel, increased the clearance by milling concrete from the structure and they are now in the testing phase. There will be a running event on 27 November. An open day for the public is also scheduled for sometime between 27 November and January 2017, when the tunnel reopens for traffic.

With aqueducts like the one over the A1, is the idea to preserve space for tall boats without needing a drawbridge? Boats with tall masts and such. I don't really know for sure but I would guess that they don't tend to be used for shipping, unless they're really deep. That one doesn't look so deep.

Yachting is quite popular in the Netherlands. Most bridges have a low clearance (less than 2.5 meters), so they need a drawbridge. Major river bridges usually have at least what they call 'Rhine shipping clearance', which is some 9 meters above high water level, so these are often fixed bridges high enough for commercial shipping to pass through.

Then there is also a 'standing mast route' for tall mast ships, which have either drawbridges or aqueducts. Friesland province in particular has a large concentration of road aqueducts as yachting is extremely popular there.

A22 Velsen Tunnel

Some recent photos of the Velsen Tunnel (A22) renovation. The tunnel is completely stripped and re-equipped during a 9 month closure. They also increased the clearance for trucks. It is the oldest motorway tunnel in the Netherlands, it opened to traffic in 1957. It goes under the North Sea Canal.

There is a running event on 27 November. There will be an open day after that, before the tunnel reopens to traffic in January 2017.

speed limits

More sections of motorway will go up to 130 km/h, 24/7.

* A2 Leenderheide - Budel (a short segment will remain 120 km/h until safety upgrades are completed in 2018): 15 km
* A7 Tijnje - Drachten: 14 km
* A12 Gouwe - Reeuwijk: 5 km
* A15 Meteren - Valburg: 37 km
* A28 Utrecht-De Uithof - Maarn: 11 km

These are all in both directions. Especially A15 is a longer distance. It is planned to introduce the 130 km/h speed limit on 23 December 2016.

However, the 130 km/h speed limit will be introduced on A15 between Meteren and Echteld in December 2018, due to the planned renovation of the motorway.

So a total of 82 km of motorway will see 130 km/h speed limits with this traffic regulation order.

They often introduce new speed limits in batches, a handful of sections at the time, due to environmental and safety studies.
