Dear Members ,
I am a relatively new entrant to this blogging site which focuses on the development aspects of Trivandrum city.I have been a mute witness to all the denials made to this beautiful city by the political establishment over the decades.I felt so helpless when our city was slowly pushed towards decay and destruction .Now I find that a meaningful discussion is taking place in these electronic pages opening a new chapter in the development scene of our city.I find a new and fresh whiff of fresh air blowing in the city bringing relief to the citizenary. We need to have a thinktank for the city which can identify and facilitate the development works rising above political and economic gains. It is my sincere observation that any apolitical forum which can draw on the exposure and expertise of the thousands of Trivandrumites who are working across the world can be pooled to give a steady direction for taking the development initiatives forward.Trivandrum happens to be the only city in Kerala which had some sort of planning when the Travancore royal family decided to shift the capital and built up the new capital. And it is no wonder that the same works still stand good after the passage of time and imposed growth, supporting a population much beyond the planned capacity. No other city in kerala can boast of a lifequality comparable to Trivandrum in terms of clean air, clean water and serenity .It will be more appropriate to say that Trvandrum has grown silently than any of the voiciferous cities of kerala. We find that though every other person in kerala would like to criticise trivandrum and its citizens ,they are the foremost in making a move to trivandrum given its position in all levels of education and job oportunities whether in the govt sector or the private sector.Trivandrum has always welcomed the masses whether they are from within the state or from outside. And they have all settled down in Trivandrum to make the cultural fabric very colourful and vibrant. We,the Trivandrumites should come together under a single forum to work for the development of Trivandrum in all fronts thereby giving back to our parent city what it has provided to us.Let us address all the problems through this forum and find solutions that has evaded the political establishments for a long time.Let us place development above politics.I look forward to a healthy discussion which will lead to action thru this forum.

It’s official: Let more statues bloom!

Statues win, it seems. The State Government has no plans to ban statues on roads, Cultural Affairs Minister K C Joseph said on Thursday.

Replying to questions in the Assembly, the Minister said that no move in this regard was under the consideration of the Government. Statues on junctions and traffic islands in the capital city had invited the wrath of road development agencies such as the Thiruvananthapuram Road Development Company Ltd (TRDCL).

Also, the Kerala High Court too had noted that it was best to avoid statues in such places in the best interests of motorists and future development. In fact, the TRDCL had specifically objected to the plans for installing statues on roads being developed by it.

Objections by road agencies had also coincided with controversies surrounding some of the statues planned in the city. There were reports that Muslim scholars had objected to memorialising evergreen actor Prem Nazir with a statue. But the Cultural Affairs Minister denied this on Thursday. He added that the Government has sanctioned ` 10 lakh to the Thiruvananthapuram Film Fraternity for installing Nazir’s statue.

Plans for a statue of R Sankar at Palayam also ran into controversy with the TRDCL objecting to it and another section complaining that the statue would be too close to the World War I memorial. Move to install statues of freedom fighter Annie Mascrene and actor Sathyan had also courted controversies over various reasons.

Hoardings/Flags “Menace” in Thiruvananthapuram City !

City beautification suffered a major roadblock when the Thiruvananthapuram Road Development Company Limited (TRDCL), concessionaire of the City Road Improvement Project (CRIP), expressed its helplessness in maintaining the city roads, which get messy after every political convention. The hoardings, flexes and flag poles cause major inconvenience, especially during the monsoon season.

Though hoardings are banned on the city roads, the district administration, the City Corporation and the Kerala Road Fund Board often fail to take stern action against the errant practice.

SFI district president R S Balamurali said that his organisation would remove the hoardings and other materials once the convention was over. “We usually remove the festoons and hoardings after the programme. This time too, we will do that,” he said. Asked whether the SFI would compensate if there was any destruction to public property, he said no such complaint had come to his notice.

Meanwhile, Anil Kumar Pandala, project director of TRDCL, said the company has to shell out Rs. 3-4 lakh on repainting every six months. “No political party is an exception. TRDCL is responsible for the maintenance for the next 15 years. Every six months, we have to paint the hand railings and poles which is a costly affair,” he said. At least, they must not block the footpaths, he added.

Arches were banned in the city almost two years ago after a media campaign. However, they are making a comeback through political party-sponsored functions. Also, the plastic festoons and flexes aggravate the waste menace in the city.

Urbanisation issues in focus

To deal with the problems related to urbanisation, there should be a coercive implementation of remedial measures, Shashi Tharoor, MP, has said.

He was speaking on ‘Challenges and opportunities to urbanisation in Kerala’ as part of a lecture series on policy dialogue organised by Open Space, Thiruvananthapuram, in the city on Saturday. Open Space is a youth and civil society outreach initiative in the State. The discussion focussed on the present problems of urbanisation in the State, particularly in the city that is reeling under waste management crisis and traffic congestion.

The problems faced by the State today owing to urbanisation were the results of man-made mistakes. People had to be coerced into initiating necessary measures to tackle these issues, said Mr. Tharoor. M.A. Baby, MLA, said that to deal with unplanned urbanisation, there should be a massive change in the socio-economic relations and various State policies. Equally important was the intervention at grass-root level which could be achieved only through creating awareness.

“Unless there is public participation, we cannot solve the issues and it is this realisation that needs to be taught to people. We should have a massive democratic force at molecular level. It should not be a top-down approach but a collective effort,” he said.

Also expressing his views was State Planning Board member G. Vijayaraghavan who felt that those who failed to take these issues seriously had to be punished.

“People feel that they can easily get away with any mistake they commit. We do not have a strict penal system. There has been interference in the system’s actual functioning at various levels,” Mr. Vijayaraghavan said.

There should be a coercive execution of remedial measures, says Shashi Tharoor.

Railway Users’ Association plea for more trains, doubling of line | 16th July 2012
“Thiruvananthapuram-Nagercoil-Kanyakumari (87 km) is a highly saturated single line section with a line capacity utilisation of 95.7%. It was announced in 2004-05 and in 2011-12 railway budget that a survey would be conducted to lay one more line in parallel with the existing line between Thiruvananthapuram and Kanyakumari stations to make the stretch double, aiming at reducing the existing traffic congestion between the stretches. Accordingly, a survey and feasibility study was conducted and the report submitted to to Railway Board for consideration and approval,” he said.

Railway Users’ Association plea for more trains, doubling of line
By Express News Service - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM

Kanyakumari District Railway Users’ Association has demanded that a Kochuveli-Velankanni train should be introduced as pilgrims from South Kerala and South Tamil Nadu visit Velankanni all through the year in large numbers.

Also, the association has demanded a Kanyakumari-Mangalore link train service via Kottayam and direct memu train service from Kanyakumari-Kollam-Thiruvananthapuram-Tirunelveli.

P Edward Jeni, secretary, Kanyakumari District Railway Users’ Association in a press release said that doubling of projects should also be undertaken between Thiruvananthapuram and Kanyakumari.

Thiruvananthapuram-Nagercoil-Kanyakumari (87 km) is a highly saturated single line section with a line capacity utilisation of 95.7%.

However, even five years after the budgetary announcement, there is no sign of the project-realisation.

“Due to over congestion in the stretch, the railway authorities already expressed their inability to introduce any new train in the stretch. As a result, the momentum in the railway development project has been stalled and the scope for any new train in the near future is very bleak. The association is really concerned about the present situation and urge Railways to announce the doubling works as soon as possible,” the association said in a press release.
