Let me ask you something: do you happen to know how many castles (only castles, not palaces) there are in whole Italy? Once I read that Trentino/Sudtirol, Valle d'Aosta and Calabria were the regions with the highest numbers of fortified constructions. Is this really true?
Do you have some information about that? How is Italy in comparison to its european neighbors? Have you got some numbers?
Nice!
Comparable to Tallinn Old Town walls.
Tallinn's city wall originally had a length of 2.35 kilometers and comprised 46 wall and gate towers. Large sections of the medieval city wall still stand today including 26 of the defensive towers. Each tower has a name.
Hello Kriativus! Thank you!
There are still no official data for Italy due to the overwhelming quantity of historical
monuments, but there is a very prudent and underestimated esteem that says that there are some 80-85 thousands palaces, villas and historical residences in italy, of which some 45 thousands at least are castles. there are some 5000 historical cities and 30 thousand historical centers, and for the churches, the lowest data I've heard is 100 thousand temples. The high number of castles and fortresses are due to the fact that until national unification cities were fighting against each other, and so the noblemen used to compete with each other in having the most beautiful palace decorated by the best artists. Obviously the fact that italy reached national unification only in the XIX century helped this "artistical fight".
Also the tradition in graphical arts and in architecture could be an easy explaination though.
bye!
Wow... It's beyond unbelievable. Those numbers are outstanding! Thanks a lot for the info, I really appreciated it.
In other words, no other country on Earth can really match these numbers! I would go further, no other place on the planet can compete with Italy in historical, artistical or architectural fields.
Another monster palace, matching the Palazzo del Quirinale or the Reggia di Caserta:
Palazzo Pitti in Florence, it was the Savoy royal palace of Italy when Florence became the capital for a short period in XIX century
XIV c. Medininkai castle, Lithuania. The biggest enclosure castle on the territory of the former Grand Duchy of Lithuania (6,5 ha; inner yard-1,85 ha, donjon- 30m.).
