Tampa Bay Volleyball's under-15 squad beat Vision Volleyball from Los Gatos, Calif., 25-23, 28-26, to win the National Division championship at the 2007 USA Volleyball National Championships in Minneapolis on July 4.
The squad was led by Madison Martin, who was named the tournament MVP for her performances, while Allison McCurdy and Lindsay Young were also named to the all-tournament team.
'That group has played together for so long I think it was just that Maddy took it upon herself to make some key plays,' Coach John Coup said.
Tampa Bay beat the Texas Tornados in the bracket semifinals, winning 25-22, 22-25, 15-7. With the score 6-5 in the third set, McCurdy made a perfect dig to center Rebecca Howard, who set up Young for the kill and the point. The dig appeared to stun the Tornados squad, as server Katie Daorai came in and reeled off six straight points to set up the victory.
Tampa Bay's under-17 squad fell to the Dunes Volleyball Club from Michigan City, Ind., 20-25, 25-14, 15-13 in the American Division championship. Kellie Catanach, Jannica Mollett and Krista Anderson were named to the all-tournament team.
Gacsy Eager To Impress At National Festival
Even before the USA Hockey Southeastern District Tryouts at Indian Trail, N.C., 2007 had been a good year for Chris Gacsy. He and his Gaither/Sickles teammates had won a second straight combined state title, and his Team Raiders Bantam squad had won the Central Florida Hockey League title with a perfect record with Gacsy as the leading scorer.
But Gacsy will be on his own in St. Cloud, Minn., next weekend when he is part of the USA Hockey National Festival. After impressing scouts at the district tryouts, Gacsy was the only player from the Tampa Bay area selected to play in the event.
'It means a lot,' Gacsy said. 'It shows that the Southeast is doing really good, and I'm glad to be a part of a bunch of winning teams, and I'm glad I can help out those teams.'
Gacsy will be playing as part of the under-15 event. The festival is part of USA Hockey's developmental program, and includes instructional practices for the 12 20-player squads assembled from across the U.S.
Local Soccer Teams Headed To N. Carolina
Three boys soccer teams from RSL Florida and Strictly Soccer will head to North Carolina for the annual Score at the Shore tournament that begins today in Greensboro.
RSL Florida's under-17 squad, which is the reigning state champion and currently leads the USL Super-Y League Southeast Division, is hoping to improve on its showing at the U.S. Soccer Southern Regionals, where it was unable to advance past the group stage. With 64 teams entered in the competition, only the group winner will advance to the round of 16. RSL will face Albertson Academy from New York, the Loudon Crew from Virginia and the Voorhees Hurricanes from New Jersey in the group stage.
It is joined in the under-17 division by Strictly Soccer, which will face the Dallas Fort Worth Tornados, Manalapan Rough Riders from New Jersey and the Montgomery (Md.) Dragons in Group A.
RSL Florida will also compete in the under-16 division.
