Profile:

Several MRTS proposals for Bangalore have been in the pipeline for nearly 24 years. In 1982, a study suggested that the MRTS should have a route length of 12.20 km. and pegged the cost at Rs. 239.15 crores.

In 1983, the Metropolitan Transit Project, an organization of Indian Railways, prepared a feasibility report for provision of suburban rail services on existing lines, a circular railway of 57.9 km. metro system on two corridors, in Phase-I 12.9 km. from Rajajinagar to Jayanagar and in Phase - II 11.2 km. from Hudson Circle to Krishnarajapuram. In 1988, a World Bank aided study was carried out by RITES and the study recommended a Commuter Rail System along with improvement of road transport system.

Later, in 1994, the Bangalore Mass Rapid Transit Limited (BMRTL) was incorporated by the State Government to implement the mass rapid transit system. BMRTL in turn asked the IL&FS to carry out a feasibility study for LRT System on Public-Private Partnership. However, though the partner was selected, the project did not take off. Later, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) in partnership with RITES prepared a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for Bangalore Metro Rail, Phase I in 2003 at the instance of the Government. It proposed two double line corridors: East-West (EW) and North-South (NS) with a total length of 33 km.

The Bangalore Metro Rail finally took shape with the Karnataka Government clearing the project in March, 2005 and the Union Government giving its approval in April, 2006.

BMRCL now also gets high speed rail project

The State Government has asked the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) to take over the contentious High Speed Rail Link (HSRL) expected to connect the Bengaluru International Airport (BIA) with BRV Parade Grounds in the heart of the City.

The project whose request for qualification (RFQ) was about to be invited from interested bidders will now be taken over by the BMRCL. Thus, the Bangalore Airport Rail Link Ltd which was formed as a special purpose vehicle for the project under the Karnataka State
Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (KSIIDC) has now been closed.

BMRCL Managing Director N Sivasailam said that the Corporation would now start selecting the private party among the five eligible bidders who qualified at the RFQ stage. When asked whether the line would remain a high-speed link catering exclusively to the airport or would be made a metro line, Sivasailam said that market forces will decide the matter as the private party would certainly expect returns from the investment.

Viability gap funding

The State Government has committed to offer land, along Sankey Road, Ramana Maharshi Road and Bellary Road, free of cost for the project whereas the central government has agreed to offer 20 per cent viability gap funding.

This 35-km rail link to the airport was estimated to cost about Rs 5,800 crore and the distance sought to be covered within 30 minutes with stations at Cubbon Road, Hebbal and Yelahanka.

The project required about 66 hectares of land, including 13 hectares of government land, nine hectares of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) land and 44 hectares of private land. The cost of private land was estimated at Rs 532 crore at market value.

Sivasailam evaded a specific answer when asked whether the new line would continue to be HSRL or become Metro. He said the line could act as HSRL as well as Metro and the modalities would be decided later. Differential fare structure could be adopted for airport link and for regular metro stations en-route, he added.

A Metro train link to the airport could cover the distance in about 50 minutes according to a rough estimate, Sivasailam said.

The countdown begins

As the countdown has begun for the commercial launch of Metro Rail in Bangalore, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike has intensified its preparedness to give a feel-good to the VVIPs visiting on October 20.

Carrying out an extensive inspection drive on Saturday as well, the Palike Commissioner Siddaiah directed the officials to ensure that cleanliness is maintained and no garbage piles up along the road from Trinity Circle to MG Road. He also directed the officers to see to it that the damaged footpath is repaired in this area.

He also asked the officials from Horticulture department to increase the greenery all over the area. During the inspection, the commissioner noticed that the painting of curb stones was not done properly, for which he took the officers to task.

The BBMP has already taken up asphalting of the road from MG Road to Trinity Circle on a war-footing. The Palike officials are confident that they would finish the work in the next two-three days. As the underground drains are choked leading to overflowing of sewage from some manholes near Trinity Circle, the BBMP officials asked the BWSSB authorities to clear the manholes.

The BBMP has decided that the roads along Reach I of Metro would also look similar to MG Road and Trinity Circle.

given in todays news paper , an additional line to electronic city via Silk board and BTM layout is added in reach 4 to connect rv road junction ?

could anyone elaborate on this ?

Thanks
A high-powered panel approved an additional branch line
in Reach 4 to connect RV Road via BTM Layout, Central Silk Board and Electronic City which will culminate at Bommas- andra. “The above projects were cleared by a high-powered committee chaired by chief secretary,” BMRC MD Sivasailam said.
One branch of Reach 4 will go west and proceed south to Puttenahalli via Banashankari and Kanakapura road. Another branch (in phase 2) will go east and proceed to Bommasandra industrial area via BTM layout, Silk board, Hosur road, and Electronic city.

NAMMA METRO IS A GEEK TRAIN

^^ 15km out of 24km iimb-nagavara line will be underground

POWER IN THIRD RAIL

Electricity for the train will run on a third rail next to the main track. It has an opening at the bottom at certain points from where the train draws its power. The third rail is covered with a yellow shroud, and a person falling on the track won't be electrocuted. ABB will design, supply, instal and commission four substations to receive and distribute electricity at 66/33 kV, as well as auxiliary and traction substations.
ABB will also provide an integrated network management, or SCADA (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition) system to monitor and control the installations.

Good attempt by the reporter  The third rail is open at bottom throughout, not just at certain points as mentioned in report..

Phase 2 will connect 18-km stretch
TNN | Oct 16, 2011, 06.01AM IST

BANGALORE: The government has given in-principle clearance for the extension of Metro rail from Byappanahalli to Whitefield. This phase 2 of the project will be 18-km long and will have 17 stations.
How come baiyappanahalli to whitefield is 18km? Will it go beyond itpl to whitefield bus stand? or some circuitous route?

A smooth ride on Namma Metro

Set for launch: Namma Metro trains during the trial runs on M.G. Road, in Bangalore, on October 3. – K. Murali Kumar

It took us just 13 breezy minutes to glide 6.7 km of what would otherwise have been a screechy, honky, jammy drive from Bangalore's CBD to the east.

It was dusk and the inside of what's going to be Bangalore's new mascot was cool, bright and dust-free.

Right from the bustling Mahatma Gandhi Road, some 50 of us lucky early birds got to gawk at the cream-silver themed Namma Metro all the way to Bayyappanahalli six halts away. We moved at some 35-40 kph as people below us on the roads must have crawling at 10 kph. [40 kph is an inconceivable speed in the city these days.] That is about a half of what it can do, but that's not in the early days.

FINAL ‘GO'

When Mr Kamal Nath, Union Minister for Urban Development, formally presses the ‘go' button on October 20 , four trains each of three BEML-made cars will each run 45 trips each day between the two points on an elevated route. Each trip can pack 1,000 people in. This stretch, officials of the Bangalore Mass Rapid Corporation Ltd, told us is one of the densely travelled roads in the overgrown city.

BMRCL was formed in 2006 as a 50:50 special implementing vehicle of the State Government and the Government of India. BMRCL has set aside a Budget of Rs 2.5 crore for the inaugural event, according to its Managing Director, Mr N. Sivasailam, who said nothing was being spared on security for the event or for the running of the Metro.

When completed, hopefully by 2014-15, the Bangalore Metro will totally traverse 42 km across north and south, east and west. The full Namma [our] Metro will cost Rs 8,158 crore for phase I raised as equity and debt. Compensation to land losers alone amounts to over Rs 1,400 crore.

This is classless, said senior Indian Railways officials, who have opted to be with Bangalore Metro - technically superior than the Delhi metro or even Dubai.

Until Saturday, at least 1,000 smart cards were sold at the counters. The final test is how much will namma metro unclog Bangalore's roads.

@strike2, for kpn images you need not upload to imageshack.. you can directly post full resolution pics from that website. In firefox click on favicon left of address bar and click more information. In page info window select media tab. And select image url and remove _thumb to post images directly in ssc.

Where's the Space?

One branch of Reach 4 will go west and proceed south to Puttenahalli via Banashankari and Kanakapura road. Another branch (in phase 2) will go east and proceed to Bommasandra industrial area via BTM layout, Silk board, Hosur road, and Electronic city.

Thanks for that.

but considering the space from RV road - Silk board , the roads are quite narrow.

These roads are very important as they connect to Jayanagar and Jp nagar and other prominent location within the city.

is there a map to support the link of this particular route or is it just a nod that has been given prior to planning .

@ Mahesh thanks for the fabulous updates

@ Gentem everytime i click on the pics at KPN it says wright protected so i thought i u had to be a member there....il try that method sometime

I came to know about this a few days ago but was not sure....apparently they didnt want a to form a new org to take up HSRL so they decided to give it to BMRCL who have now got the experience to handle such project...Itl be similar to the Airport Express of New Delhi

Now that the phase II has been given a go ahead:banana:....il try and get hold of the summary of the DPR for phase 2...i have inside source in the govt

But the question is will airport link have third rail or overhead? Now with BMRCL taking over more probably they will go for third rail

You can view source in karnataka photo news website, lil geek thing though. If you use firefox then try the method i told which is easier
