Also because JJ govt is on a confrontation attitude with Central Govt on so many issues, they wont respond positively to her demand even if she demands.

Expressing similar sentiments, N. Sriram, a travel operator here, says there is a huge demand for operating passenger flights as well as a cargo service between Madurai and many international destinations. It is high time the government gave serious thought to it as most goods including Madurai Malli (jasmine), medical equipment, readymade garments, handicraft, fruits, vegetable and granite products are being exported through Chennai, Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram and Tiruchi airports.

Exactly. There is no use of expanding the runway if MOCA is not ready to include Madurai into BASA with other countries. Either they should include Madurai or ask AI to start operating flights from Madurai. Else what is the use of wasting public money?

State government has almost completed acquisition process

Airports in Madurai and Tuticorin will soon get additional land for their ambitious expansion plans. The State government has almost completed the necessary formalities for acquiring land and vast stretches will soon be handed over to the Airports Authority of India (AAI).

Land acquisition for public projects is a two-stage process, involving a preliminary notification and a final one for acquisition.

D. Devaraj, Regional Executive Director, AAI Southern Region, told The Hindu that in the case of Madurai, the State government is on the verge of issuing acquisition notification. The State has to pay compensation to those who parted with their land. In Tuticorin, the process of issuing acquisition notification would be completed soon. Once these processes are completed, the AAI would get the additional land in Madurai and Tuticorin.

Mr Devaraj said the AAI had asked for 615 acres of land in Madurai to take up expansion work. Of the total extent, patta land accounted for 433 acres.

The government held a public hearing and issued a preliminary notification for acquiring this extent. After this process, it would issue the acquisition notification. As the remaining 182 acres of land belonged to the government, it would be handed over to the AAI, he said. In Madurai, the expansion was possible only if the road leading to Aruppukkottai was diverted.

The State government had to re-route the road before issuing the notification.

Few weeks back there was a public hearing regarding acquiring the land and there was a posting also here. That time also I said one point and now also I repeat the same. Let state govt compensate those who have built houses as well as farmers adequately and if possible provide them with alternate land at another location. Runway expansion is required and important but at the same time, the farmers need to be compensated adequately. I don't want a bigger runway at the cost of poor labors & farmers livelihood.

Really development should not be at the cost of farmer's warfare. First farmer should be allocated the same size of land and then be compensated with some funds and then AAI should recruit one person from family and given jobs on their eligibility.

Pre-paid call taxi at Madurai airport !

Cab operator ‘Fast Track’ has started pre-paid call taxi service at Madurai airport on Sunday.

V.Lawrence, Managing Director, Fast Track-Madurai, in a press release said passengers could make use the facility.

I think Madurai is the second airport after Chennai to get Pre-paid Call taxi service..Correct me If I am wrong ! A huge relief for our passengers from local taxi walas who charged heavyily so far !!

It will be good if Madurai Travel Club starts early the already planned Volvo A/c Shuttle service connecting various important spots in the city with Madurai airport.

No MK..It is being planned by Madurai Travel Club people I heard !

Only myself on behalf of AAM made a request to TNSTC-Madurai on the need of operating a Shuttle service to Madurai airport..It was almost a year since I made the request, I am yet to get any response from TNSTC-Madurai officials on the same.

Shuttle service is being planned to originate from Hotel Fortune Pandyan and connect Madurai airport after picking passengers at Goripalayam, Simmakal, Railway Junction and Periyar Bus-stand..I wish they originate the bus from MIBT and operate in the same route via Surveyor Colony connecting Pudur also.

Projects in India won't happen when we wish. We have to accept that what ever good thing happens -whether it is useful or not. Let us not get into a situation in which foreign airlines come back and say they cannot operate because of insufficient runway length.

Expansion of runway upto 12000 ft will help to land long haul wide bodied aircraft.

I see that this news is really good for Madurai. Way to go.
