Mangalore: Research Head from Cairo Visits AIMIT

Quote:
Mangalore, Aug 17: Head of Research at Beltone Financials, Cairo, Egypt, Angus Blair visited St Aloysius Institute of Management and Information Technology (AIMIT), Beeri here on Tuesday August 16.

Blair spoke to the MBA students of AIMIT on some of the crucial issues in financial sector and especially on the ethical issues relating to the functioning of companies and financial institutions. Giving some concrete examples he explained that financial crises could have been avoided if the persons at the helm of affairs were honest and owned responsibility for their actions and not cover up the mistakes they made. He said that honesty and transparency is very important and then only there could be better functioning of business firms.

The formal session was followed by a question and answer round where few students asked questions on various issues relating to financial services.

Blair hails from Scotland and has been a global leader and thinker in financial sector and investment banking. He has been interviewed by CNBC on finance related subjects and has been giving lectures around the world. He is also one among the top fifty thinkers invited by Bloomberg for a special conference in New York.

He has over 25 years of experience in investment banking and financial service sector. He has also been a consultant to a number of companies within Middle East and Internationally, advising on restructuring and extending operations across the Arab world.

Quote:
Several Mangaloreans have done well in the qualifying examinations of the prestigious Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS), London.

The Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers, London, announced the results of ICS Qualifying Exams for 2011 on its website recently. Those passing the qualifying examinations can become members of ICS which is the internationally recognised professional body representing shipbrokers, ship managers and agents throughout the world. ICS membership is a qualification with a global reputation and is said to represent a commitment to maintaining the highest professional standards across the shipping industry.

The KCCI has congratulated Ramanathan Kumar of Infinity Shipping, Mangalore, Prashanth C.G. of Interocean Shipping, Mangalore, Hubert D'Souza of Ericson and Richards (Karnataka), Mangalore, and Rayner Pais of Sea World Shipping and Logistics, Mangalore, on clearing all seven papers.

It said that they were the first batch of candidates to have completed the ICS Professional Qualifying Exams from the Mangalore centre. Ashram ensures poor students can pursue higher education

Quote:
MANGALORE: The 64-year-old Ramakrishna Ashram here is not only a spiritual centre for those underprivileged children in the city, but it also offers free coaching.

The free tuition centre in the ashram is indeed a ray of hope for poor children, whose parents are not in a position to afford the increasing tuition fees being collected by various tuition centres in the city.

While tuition centres in the city collect anything between Rs 200 and Rs 1,000, students at the ashram get tuition, refreshment and a cup of milk for free every day. A total of 208 students from Government High School, Bolar, Cascia High School, St Gerosa School and St Anns School have registered their names and are availing the benefits.

Tuition classes in the ashram start at 4.15pm and ends at 5.30pm with a refreshment so children will go home happy. Ashram head Swami Jitakamananda told TOI: "The main objective behind giving free tuition to the poor students is to ensure that all students are able to pursue higher education. It is a fact that poor parents are not in a position to send their children for tuition classes. Hence, we started the tuition centre here, where students from Standard IV to X are taught all subjects in separate batches.

The ashram also pays a nominal honorarium to qualified homemakers and part-time teachers who teach children in the centre.

Swami said most schools conduct special classes for SSLC students in their own school. Hence, the number of students registered for coaching for SSLC at the ashram is very less. "However, more children are approaching us seeking admission for tuitions, but due to space constraints and other reasons we have restricted admission," he said, adding that the ashram will expand the programme in future.

In addition to tuition and refreshment, students are also given bags, a set of uniform, umbrella and notebooks for free during the commencement of tuition classes.

There was drastic drop in ranking position of Udipi & DK in SSLC passing percentage ranking. DDPI of respective district have taken major steps to address the issue. Pvt players like this one above will have major impact on performance of th e students

MANGALORE: All study centres and chairs functional at Mangalore University will be housed under one roof in an integrated block that would be ready by December, vice-chancellor T C Shivashankara Murthy said here on Thursday. The university has a maximum number of study centres and chairs among universities in Karnataka at 19, including the Nehru Studies Centre which V K Nataraj, retired professor, IDS, Mysore University inaugurated here.

Presiding over the inaugural function of the Centre, the VC said all but a few of the 19 study centres and chairs of the university are functioning well and carrying out the brief given to them. At present these study centres and chairs are functioning from various locations on the university campus, he said, adding that their presence at one location would help the centres and chairs to bring about greater cohesiveness in their functioning and yield better results.

Earlier, inaugurating the Centre, Prof Nataraj said, Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of Independent India was venerated by his generation and bitterly criticized posthumously, unlike other politicians of the day. Unlike Mahatma Gandhi, there is no single critical analytical book on Nehru, he said, barring the three-volume biography penned by S Gopal and other writings on him do have much that would hold the reader's interest for very long.

However, Nehru can be credited with building scientific temper in a nascent nation by setting up premier institutions of research and development across India and also giving fillip to modern infrastructure in dams. Prof Nataraj said history was against Nehru, in that he did have the economy backing him despite his recognized stature as a leader of importance in the world. The situation is quite the converse in the present day circumstances, he opined.
