Offhand I'd say the identity was forged well before then, based on cultural and agricultural trends. Irish went urban and industrial, Scots-Irish rural and agrarian, that sort of stuff.

One of the things which is unique about the South is its sense of identity. In other words, when's the last tiem you heard about "Northeaster pride" or "Midwestern pride" ? Answer: you don't.

FYI: as a born-and-bred Floridian, it would be easier for me than some of you to weasle about of being identified as a Southerner, but I run to cast my lot with the South.
Florida?

Pfft, that's no Southerner.

Are you kidding ? Both sides of my family settled in Florida and fought for the Confederacy. In fact, one of the most famous Civil War battles was in Olustee, FL, and resulted in an ass-whipping of Yankees.

My family has been in the Carolinas (mostly NC) since the early and mid 1700's. I know that on my dad's father's side, they (English) mostly came in from Charleston, SC; dad's mother's side (Scottish/Scots-Irish) came to settle upstate SC in the early 1700's. The came in thru Philadelphia. Mom's mother's side (English) originally settled up in Connecticut in the 1600's and came down to settle central North Carolina in the early/mid 1700's; mom's father's side (German) came to Pennsylvania in the 1730's and soon down to central NC around 1750 or so. Most of both sides fought during the American Revolution.

Both sides fought and died for the Confederacy. My family was in both North Carolina and South Carolina regiments; mostly North Carolina regiments in central NC. NC supplied (125,000) and lost (over 40,000) more Confederate soldiers than any other Southern state........
NC also had more deserters than any other Southern state.

Sorry I just get into history

It would be cool to see more stats from other Southern states.
